Chapter 69

Sarah couldn't hold it in any longer and jumped up. "Caroline, are you nuts? What did I get out of this? I wasn't even there when they went out to eat. How can you blame me? I was just helping you with the kids, and now I'm the bad guy?"

Caroline shot back, "I told you Ryan and Sophie shouldn't see Nathan again. Why did you let it happen? How could you hand my kids over to a stranger without asking me? What if something went wrong?"

Sarah yelled, "Is Nathan really a stranger? Can't you see he looks just like Ryan and Sophie? Even if you have issues with Nathan, you can't keep him from seeing his kids. Isn't that selfish?"

Caroline insisted, "Just because they look alike doesn't mean they're related! To me, Nathan is a stranger! Are you so close to Nathan that you trust him with my kids?"

Sarah was livid. "Don't you know Nathan's status in Aurora City? Do you think he'd harm the kids? Didn't he bring them back safe and sound after dinner? It's over, so why are you still mad at me?"

The two kept arguing, putting a lot of pressure on Ryan and Sophie.

"Mom, stop fighting. It's not Sarah's fault. We arranged to meet Nathan ourselves," Sophie said softly.

Ryan nodded in agreement.

"Is there no food at home? Can't I feed you? Why do you have to go out and let a stranger buy you dinner? Don't you find it embarrassing?" Caroline snapped.

"Caroline, are you serious? Ryan and Sophie like Nathan because he's good to them. It's not that complicated. Nathan is super busy, and he took the time to have dinner with them. How is that embarrassing? Have you lost your mind?" Sarah scolded.

"Mom, we were wrong. We're sorry," Ryan apologized quietly.

Caroline was stunned; Ryan rarely spoke up.

"It was my fault. As the older brother, I should take responsibility. Don't blame Sophie," Ryan continued.

Caroline's anger melted away.

She realized she had been too impulsive and harsh.

"Alright, I won't push this any further, but from now on, no meeting strangers in private," Caroline said.

Ryan and Sophie quickly nodded.

After breakfast, Sarah and Caroline took the kids to school together. Sarah stayed cold and ignored Caroline the whole time.

After dropping the kids off and watching them go inside with the teacher, Sarah's face darkened. "Get out of the car!"

"What?" Caroline was confused.

"I don't want you in my car. Take a cab!" Sarah said coldly.

Caroline questioned, "Are you out of your mind? We're both going to the set. Why should I take a cab alone? Do you think cab fare is free?"

Sarah snorted, "Just looking at you annoys me. I don't want you in my car!"

"Then don't look at me. I didn't ask you to. Just focus on driving, and you won't be annoyed," Caroline said, not budging.

Sarah snapped, "Being in the same car with you annoys me!"

"Then you get out. I'll drive. That way, you won't be annoyed," Caroline shot back.

Sarah was fuming. "You're shameless!"

"If I'm shameless, then you get out," Caroline laughed.

"You're ungrateful!" Sarah cursed.

Caroline sighed, "Enough. You know why I don't want Ryan and Sophie to see Nathan. Even if they are related, can that relationship be acknowledged? Roxanne sees me as an enemy, and she's Nathan's girlfriend. If Ryan and Sophie get close to Nathan, won't Roxanne be jealous and harm them? Last time, Ryan and Sophie were attacked at home. Luckily, they were smart enough to escape. Otherwise, the consequences would have been unimaginable. I still shudder at the thought!"

She continued, "Although the attacker insisted no one sent him, I always felt it wasn't that simple. It seemed like he was targeting Ryan and Sophie. Putting Roxanne aside, Nathan and I don't like each other. If Ryan and Sophie really get involved with the Kennedy Family, he will definitely take them away, separating me from my kids. Do you want to see that happen?"

Caroline laid out all her worries in one breath, and Sarah just went quiet.

"You can call me selfish, but Ryan and Sophie are my world. Can't I be selfish just this once?" Caroline's voice wavered a bit.

Sarah sighed, "I'm sorry, Caroline. I know it's tough for you."

Caroline stared out the window, trying to calm down.

Sarah continued, "Caroline, I messed up. I should've told you everything. I never meant to betray you. You know how powerful the Kennedy Family is in Aurora City. Once you came back, it was only a matter of time before they found out about Ryan and Sophie. With their influence, once they see the resemblance to Nathan, they'll dig deep. Honestly, you can't dodge this."

She added, "So I let Ryan and Sophie meet Nathan. I figured if they're family, they have to meet eventually. Sooner might be better for you. I was in a tough spot too. And yeah, I had some selfish reasons. If you join the Kennedy Family, I'd benefit too."

After hearing Sarah's take, Caroline nodded. She agreed with most of it.

"Was the guy with you that night really Nathan?" Sarah asked.

Caroline replied, "I said I wasn't sure. But I checked online, and the director Roxanne mentioned is a fat guy. He was fat ten years ago. Based on his build, the guy that night wasn't fat, but I can't say for sure if it was Nathan."

"If it was Nathan, that's wild. You had a kid with the most sought-after guy in Aurora City. Impressive!" Sarah exclaimed.

Caroline glared at her. "Do you think that's appropriate to say?"

Sarah nodded seriously. "Yep. Just wondering why I never get that kind of luck."

At noon, Sarah and Caroline each grabbed a simple boxed meal, sitting in a corner of the set to quietly eat their lunch.

Just then, Roxanne walked into view.

Naturally, Roxanne turned her nose up at the set's simple meals. She had a team to prepare her lunch just right.

Seeing Roxanne coming, Caroline and Sarah both lowered their heads, focusing on their food, ignoring her.

"Caroline, you despicable woman!" Roxanne suddenly shouted, full of reproach.

Caroline didn't flinch, chewing her food and calmly responding, "Only a despicable person truly knows how despicable they are!"

"Why did the script change so much? Why is the new script all about your character? Did you sleep with someone to get this? You shameless woman!" Roxanne's accusations were sharp and direct.

It was clear Roxanne had just found out about the big script changes.

Caroline's lips curled into a cold smile. "Do you think everyone is like you?"

Roxanne insisted, "You despicable woman, if you didn't use dirty tricks, how could the script change like this, and a mere second female lead get so many scenes?"

"Do you want to know why?" Caroline smiled confidently, "Because I'm a better actress than you!"

Roxanne was furious. "Do you call that acting? I've been acting for so many years. Who do you think you are to comment on my acting?"

"You've been in so many bad movies, and you still don't see your flaws. It's truly pathetic," Caroline retorted coldly, staying relaxed and unbothered.

Roxanne was livid. She kicked Caroline's lunch box, sending it flying. "Let's see what you eat now!"

The lunch box flew out, food splattering everywhere, staining Caroline's clothes with grease, making her look a mess.

"Roxanne, enough is enough!" Sarah stood up, righteous and indignant.

Roxanne, however, was dismissive and immediately retorted, "Who do you think you are? Do you have any right to speak here?"
