Chapter 120

"What did I do wrong this time?" Nathan asked coldly.

"How could you say something like that? You should ensure Sawyer is safe!" Caroline demanded.

Nathan was taken aback, realizing his words were indeed inappropriate.

Ryan was young and truly couldn't bear such pressure. But she was aggressive, and even if he was wrong, he would never back down!

"I don't need you to tell me what to do. Get out!"

Caroline sneered. "Is this your house? Just because you tell me to leave, I have to?"

"This isn't yours either! You're loud and annoying!" Ryan quickly intervened, "Mom, please stop."

"Why should I? He's the one giving me trouble!" Caroline retorted angrily.

"Nathan is also worried." Ryan spoke to Caroline but spared Nathan's feelings.

Nathan couldn't help but feel a bit guilty. After all, arguing in front of the child was not a dignified thing to do.

"Forget it." Nathan chose to stay quiet.

He wasn't good with words, and once he decided to stay quiet, he became as silent as a statue.

Ryan was also quiet, making the atmosphere even heavier.

Caroline endured for several minutes, nearly suffocating. They could remain silent, but she couldn't stand it.

Finally, she chose to leave, finding it more comfortable to chat with the talkative Sophie.

Meanwhile, Ryan and Nathan remained silent. For them, silence was natural and unpressured, making it easier to think deeply.

"Ryan, what do you think is the reason for Sway being poisoned again?" Nathan broke the silence.

"The herbs," Ryan replied.

"If the medicine has taken effect, is there a high chance of relapse?"

"Not much."

"So, if it improves and then worsens again, it doesn't make sense?" Nathan pressed.

"Yes," Ryan nodded.

"Could someone have applied the medicine to Sway again?"

Ryan looked up, staring at Nathan.

He vaguely had this suspicion but didn't dare to say it out loud.

Children were inherently pure and reluctant to believe in the evil in human nature. To a child, the idea of harming others was deeply frightening.

"You think so too, don't you?"

Ryan didn't speak. He wasn't sure and didn't want it to be true.

Nathan pondered, 'Who could it be?'

Nathan's first thought was of Caroline. She had once sneaked into Sawyer's room, indicating their relationship was far from ordinary. Sawyer's arrival had clearly unsettled her, fearing old secrets might come to light, possibly driving her to want him dead.Known for her promiscuous nature and clandestine relationship with Sawyer, Caroline had both the motive and the means to eliminate him.The more Nathan pondered, the more suspicious she seemed. He even speculated that her recent argument was a ploy to confirm if Sawyer was dead. Everyone else had gone to the river except Caroline. If it wasn't her, who could it be?

Thinking of this, Nathan's face turned grim, and he got up to move.

"Nathan, where are you going?" Ryan sensed the coldness from Nathan and couldn't help but feel scared.

"I'm just going to check around."

Nathan knew he couldn't let Ryan sense his true intentions. No matter what, he had to preserve the child's image of his mother.

Frequently making children question their parents' goodness would only leave them at a loss, unable to cope with such a harsh reality.

In the long run, it would affect the child's personality development, potentially leading to a distorted personality.

Nathan understood this well, so he didn't plan to discuss Caroline in front of the child.

But he would never let this matter go; Caroline must pay for it!

"Nathan, do you suspect someone intentionally applied the medicine to Sawyer?" Ryan was too smart and had vaguely caught Nathan's thoughts.

Nathan couldn't speak plainly, nor did he want to lie. "This matter needs further investigation."

"It's definitely not Mom," Ryan said firmly.

Nathan was momentarily speechless.

After a brief pause, he decided to protect the child from harm and reluctantly said, "I don't think it's your mom either."

Hearing this, Ryan felt at ease.

After dinner, Caroline was dragged to the river by Nathan again.

Nathan's expression was cold, and Caroline was on guard. She hadn't walked far before stubbornly stopping, unwilling to take another step.

She muttered to herself, wondering what she would do if he took her to a deserted place and killed her in a fit of anger.

"Just say what you have to say. I don't owe you anything. Why are you dragging me here?" Caroline raised her voice to mask her panic and resist Nathan's pressure.

"Why did you do that?" Nathan asked coldly.

"I had to do it!" Caroline's attitude was firm.

Nathan was almost furious. She nearly caused a disaster, and she could still be so self-righteous?

He suddenly grabbed Caroline, forcing her step by step to the edge of the river. With just a slight push, she would fall into the river.

Nathan then pulled her back to the shore.

"If you kill me, I'll haunt you forever!!" Caroline was still trembling, having just faced the real threat of death.

"You unrepentant woman!" Nathan was furious.

"What should I repent for? I did nothing wrong. I've always done it this way!" Caroline retorted.

"You've always been harming people?"

"I'm just educating my own child. Who am I bothering?"

Nathan suddenly realized they were not on the same page!

Was she pretending to be dumb to change the subject?

"Why did you harm Sway?" Nathan asked again.
