Chapter 26

Nathan squinted at Caroline, thinking, 'Nice try, pinning it on me. If I make her slap herself, it's straight-up bullying. I'd look like a total clown.'

Nathan's eyes sparkled with interest. Smart folks loved a good mental duel; it kept things spicy.

It had been ages since Nathan met a woman gutsy enough to play mind games with him. He found it kinda thrilling. So, he just waved his hand, still keeping quiet.

Everyone was trying to figure out what his wave meant. Was it over? Or was he ignoring her, meaning she still had to slap herself?

"Mr. Kennedy, don't listen to her..." Roxanne started, but Nathan's wave shut her up. He motioned for Caroline to come closer.

Caroline was confused. She hesitated but took a step closer. Nathan's eyes told her it wasn't close enough.

Roxanne was losing it. This was supposed to be her chance to take down Caroline, but now it was all twisted.

She thought, 'What's Nathan up to? Does he know Caroline's the woman he hooked up with back then? No way!'

Caroline inched closer. The nearer she got, the more nervous she felt. Nathan's powerful vibe could crush anyone's confidence. Even someone as tough as Caroline felt scared. She couldn't read silent Nathan at all.

Nathan lowered his eyes and took a deep breath, unnoticed. He caught that sweet orange blossom scent again, a smell that felt both distant and familiar.

No one but Nathan's mom knew he had a super-sensitive nose. He could pick up the tiniest scent differences, like roses open for three days versus five, or wines from the same vineyard but different batches. He never ate expired food because he could smell its freshness. This super sense of smell made him a "scent cleanliness freak." His staff had to change their shirts and wash their hair daily, or he couldn't stand their sweat smell. But Nathan never told anyone he knew they hadn't changed their shirts because he could smell it. That was his secret.

Nathan confirmed the faint orange blossom scent on Caroline was the one from his memory. He felt a long-lost joy.

The room was dead silent. Everyone's eyes were glued to Caroline and Nathan, clueless about what was happening.

Caroline didn't know either. She just stood there in front of Nathan. His gaze was cold but not murderous; he didn't seem like he was planning to kill her. He just silently lowered his eyes.

The scene was super weird. Caroline got more and more nervous. She couldn't figure Nathan out.

She had pissed off Nathan today, so she guessed he was thinking about how to punish her.

Just as everyone held their breath, waiting for something to go down, Nathan stood up. He said nothing, just walked out with his long legs.

Everyone was shocked he just left like that.

Jack was the first to react and told everyone, "Mr. Kennedy was just passing by. He knew you were starting today and came to check it out. He has other stuff to do and left."

Jack was basically Nathan's spokesperson. What he said was pretty much what Nathan wanted to say. No one doubted him because he was almost never wrong.

Caroline turned around and let out a long breath, feeling kinda drained. The mental pressure Nathan gave her was just too much.

A silent Nathan was one of the scariest things ever. She never knew what he was thinking or what he was gonna do, but his threat was real.

Caroline suddenly thought, 'Will my Ryan turn into someone like Nathan in the future? Given the way things are going, he might just become super handsome, super silent, and super cold. What should I do?'
