Chapter 139
Nathan thought to himself, "Caroline is really uncultured. If she marries into the Kennedy Family, won't it just cause chaos?" Helplessly, he moved to the sofa and sat down.
At this moment, his stomach felt like it was on fire, with pain quietly creeping in. Trying to keep a straight face, Nathan gulped down a glass of water, but it had little effect. Before long, unable to bear it any longer, he rushed to the bathroom.
"Uh-oh, Daddy has diarrhea. Can he really not handle spicy food?" Sophie muttered.
"Isn't he able to eat it? He seemed to enjoy it," Caroline said, frowning.
Nathan returned from the bathroom, his face still calm.
In reality, he had been in so much pain that sweat had formed on his forehead.
"I have to leave now," Nathan said succinctly.
"Leaving already? Stay a bit longer," Sarah urged.
"No, I have to go," Nathan said, heading towards the door.
Suddenly, he turned back and rushed straight to the bathroom again. Despite his efforts to remain composed, it was clear to others that he was suffering greatly from the barbecue. When he reappeared, Nathan no longer dared to mention leaving, fearing he'd become a laughingstock. He quietly returned to the sofa, maintaining an indifferent demeanor.
"Daddy is acting like Nathan again," Sophie accurately remarked.
"If you can't handle it, don't force yourself. See, now you have diarrhea," Caroline said reproachfully.
"It's not just spicy; it's excessively greasy too," Nathan complained.
The mighty ruler of Aurora City, defeated by a barbecue meal, Nathan felt deeply frustrated.
"Barbecue has to be spicy and greasy to be enjoyable," Caroline said discontentedly.
Nathan had no response.
"Mr. Nick Kennedy, do you want to go to the hospital?" Sarah asked worriedly.
"No need, it's just diarrhea. He is not that delicate. He'll just take some medicine. Let me find some."
After searching, Caroline came back empty-handed. "We're out of medicine. We need to buy some."
"I'll go get it for you," Sarah volunteered.
"No need, I can handle it," Nathan said, standing up, only to return to the bathroom due to discomfort. When he reappeared, he decided to go to the hospital. With an important meeting tomorrow, he couldn't let this continue.
"I have to go. I'm feeling better," Nathan said.
"What a hassle. You came here yourself, and you insisted on eating barbecue. Fine, I'll go down with you and buy the medicine. You'll feel better after taking it," Caroline responded impatiently.
"No need. Thank you," Nathan declined politely.
"Why are you being so difficult? Come on, I'll go with you to buy the medicine. It'll work immediately after you take it," Caroline said, pushing Nathan, clearly annoyed.
Nathan couldn't argue and let her accompany him out.
Downstairs, Caroline instructed him like a child. "Wait in the car. I'll go to the pharmacy to buy the medicine. Take it before you leave, and you won't have diarrhea anymore."
Nathan was annoyed by her tone but had no choice.
In no time, Caroline returned with the medicine and water.
"Take it, and you'll feel better soon."She handed him two white pills, placing them in Nathan's palm.
Nathan hesitated, scrutinizing Caroline.
"Take it. Why would I harm you? What good would it do me? Just swallow it!" Caroline had clearly lost her patience.
Nathan figured she wouldn't poison him but questioned how a non-medical person could be so confident that two pills would cure him.
"Hurry up, why are you staring at me?" Caroline urged.
Nathan had no choice but to swallow the pills and take a sip of water.
"Okay, trust me, you'll feel better soon," Caroline said confidently.
Nathan didn't respond, still skeptical.
Caroline was puzzled. She thought, 'Isn't Nick usually talkative? Why is he so silent today? Could it be that the diarrhea has made him feel disoriented?'
She leaned back in the passenger seat. "I'll wait here for a while. If I go up now, I'll have to wash the dishes. I'll wait until Sarah finishes before going back up."
Nathan was surprised. He thought, 'Is there really such a tactic?'
"Is your stomach feeling better now?" Caroline asked.
Perhaps it was psychological, but Nathan did feel much better and nodded in agreement.
Caroline was smug. "I always treat my son's diarrhea."
Nathan found her words awkward.
Caroline quickly noticed the change in Nathan's expression and hurried to clarify, "I didn't mean it that way. Of course, you're not my son."
But her explanation only made the atmosphere more awkward.
Nathan's eyes darkened, and he struggled to suppress his anger.
"I mean, for people like us, we usually don't go to the hospital for minor ailments. We try to handle it ourselves. Going to the hospital means a bunch of tests, and before you even see the doctor, you've already spent a lot of money. We can't afford that? So we often figure out how to treat ourselves. Over time, we almost become half-doctors. Some of the quacks in the hospital don't know as much as I do."After saying this, Caroline gave Nathan a gentle smile.
Nathan's fury was suddenly replaced by an inexplicable emotion. He realized that some people avoided the hospital not because they were lazy, but because they couldn't afford it. She really had a tough life!
The soft glow of the neighborhood lights highlighted Caroline's features, making her look especially beautiful—like a delicate flower blooming quietly in the night, understated yet captivating.
"Don't you believe me?" Caroline asked, looking at Nathan.
