Chapter 142
Nathan nodded slightly and waved goodbye to Ryan and Sophie.
"Bye Daddy, bye Mommy," Sophie said energetically.
Caroline waved goodbye and prepared to cross the street to hail a cab to the set.
"I'll drive you there," Nathan suggested.
"If you're busy, it's fine. I can get a cab myself."
"I happen to be free."
As Caroline settled into the car, an uneasy silence filled the air.
Nathan thought, 'If it were Nick, he'd be chatting away, making jokes. What should I talk about?'
"How's the filming going?" Nathan tried to break the ice.
"It's been on hold for a while. Last night, William called and said they found someone new to replace Roxanne. Today's the first day of shooting," Caroline replied.
Nathan wasn't much of a talker. After Caroline finished speaking, he fell back into silence.
He quickly realized he shouldn't be so quiet and hurried to start another conversation.
"Roxanne had a lot of scenes. They'll have to reshoot everything."
"That's fine. Her acting was terrible and dragged the whole crew down."
"I heard she's your sister. Is that true?" Nathan asked curiously.
Caroline became alert. "Who told you that?"
"I can't remember. I just heard it somewhere. Isn't it true?"
Nathan speculated that Caroline must have done something wrong to deny even her sisterly bond.
"It's true," Caroline didn't deny it, surprising him.
"Then why are you two on bad terms?"
"Because she's not a good person."
Nathan pondered, "The two of them blaming each other—who is really at fault?"
"Did she hurt you?"
Caroline leaned back in her seat. "Let the past be; she's already facing the consequences."
"But the crew seems to think highly of Roxanne," Nathan probed carefully.
"She's Nathan's girlfriend. Who would dare disrespect her? She used Nathan's backing to act arrogantly. Her acting is so bad, yet Nathan blindly supports her. It's ridiculous," Caroline sneered.
Nathan fumed internally. He thought, 'You're the blind one!'
"Nathan's doing it for business reasons. He's not as bad as you say. The Kennedy Corp has been thriving under his management." Praising himself, Nathan felt a bit awkward, as if he had done something shameful.
"I don't understand your family's matters. I just know he's a guy who can't tell right from wrong. He treats others like they're beneath him and only cares about himself. His arrogance is astonishing!" Caroline commented disdainfully.
In his anger, Nathan slammed on the gas, causing the car to speed up suddenly and almost hit the car in front. He had to brake hard.
The sudden stops made Caroline jolt uncomfortably.
"Do you even know how to drive?" she scolded.
"If you're so great, why don't you drive?" Nathan couldn't hold back his anger anymore.
"You insisted on driving me. I was going to take a cab!"
"You ungrateful woman! Do you reckon I can have you booted from the crew?" Nathan exuded a cold aura, his patience at its limit.
"You dare to threaten me? Go on then, attempt to oust me!Without Roxanne, the entire show hinges on my presence. If I'm ousted, the entire production will crumble, and all the invested funds will go to waste." Caroline responded with a cold smile.
Nathan looked at Caroline, seething with anger. He thought, 'Such arrogance! What's more annoying is that she's right. At this moment, I indeed couldn't afford to fire her, or the initial investment would be lost!'
"There are other actors besides you!" he shouted.
"I'm not being arrogant. You brought up firing me first! I thought you were different from Nathan, at least a bit more likable. Turns out you're just the same, just like your clueless brother! Twins, after all, same IQ!"
"Shut up!" Nathan roared.
Caroline realized her rudeness. The oppressive atmosphere in the car made her uneasy.
She was still in his car. If he lost control, she'd be in danger!
Besides, fighting for custody of the kids would inevitably mean facing Nathan head-on.
She had to find a way to win over Nick, or she'd be fighting both of them alone, which would be a losing battle!
With this thought, Caroline quickly changed her attitude.
"I was just joking. You're not dumb; Nathan is. You're much smarter and more handsome than him. You outshine him in every way. He's only a few minutes older than you, nothing else!"
Caroline thought this flattery would ease the tension.
However, it had the opposite effect, making his expression even more sour.
It seemed he wasn't easy to appease. This was tricky.
Caroline had a sudden realization: Nick wouldn't tolerate any criticism directed at him, let alone Nathan.
Indeed, as twin brothers, similar in appearance and connected in spirit, it was only natural.
The strategy needed adjustment—praise both brothers together!"Nick, you and Nathan are truly impeccable and incredibly handsome. Who dares top the Kennedy Family in family background? Nathan's impressive vision and intelligence shine through in the roles he assigns and the scenes he gives me."Just as she was getting into it, Caroline suddenly froze, feeling two sharp gazes piercing through her.
Nathan thought, 'She is clearly praising herself!'
Caroline couldn't help but laugh. "I threw in some self-praise too, don't mind it. Anyway, you two are exceptional!"
Nathan frowned. She was too cunning!
Caroline observed secretly, noticing his expression softened, and his gaze wasn't as sharp. Clearly, her flattery was working.
"Are we really that good?" Nathan's tone softened a bit.
"Yes, very good," Caroline said sincerely.
Nathan was puzzled. It was obviously a lie, so why did her expression seem so genuine?
Was it an actor's trait, or was she unique?
"Then why didn't you marry me?" Nathan asked coldly.
The question hit hard, momentarily silencing Caroline.
Indeed, if he was so remarkable, why hadn't she married him?
"Well, whether I marry you or not has nothing to do with whether you're great," Caroline answered reluctantly.
"How can it not be related?"
"It's all about the feeling."Caroline retorted.
"You've already had Ryan and Sophie," the man hit the nail on the head.
