Chapter 61
Jack was stuck in a tough spot, feeling super conflicted.
Nathan told him to make the call, but Sawyer wasn’t having it.
Sawyer, looking like he was ready to throw down, faced off with Nathan, while Jack watched nervously from the sidelines.
Jack tried to calm Sawyer down, "Sawyer, just chill. Mr. Kennedy has his reasons."
Nathan waved him off, cutting Jack short.
With a sharp look at Sawyer, Nathan huffed, "I want Demi fired!"
The message was clear. Business or personal, fair or not, he wanted her gone!
"Then I’m out too!" Sawyer shot back, not backing down.
Nathan’s eyes got even colder.
Sawyer pressed on, "If she’s fired, this movie means nothing to me. I’ll quit 'Thunder 2'!"
Nathan’s mouth twitched slightly.
"Fine! Then get out of the country," Nathan said coldly.
Nathan then signaled to Jack, "Call William."
Jack hesitated. "Mr. Kennedy..."
Nathan insisted, "Make the call!"
Seeing Nathan’s firm stance, Sawyer knew that pushing back more wouldn’t get him anywhere.
He needed a different plan to fix this mess.
Nathan was the kind of guy who never bowed to anyone.
"It was my fault, Nathan," Sawyer admitted, grabbing Jack’s phone and hanging up. He bowed deeply to Nathan. "I shouldn’t have contradicted you. But this really isn’t Demi’s fault. There were thin, poisoned needles hidden in her costume."
Nathan stayed silent, so Sawyer continued, "Demi felt sick after putting on the costume, but she toughed it out and finished the morning shoot. Nathan, you should know why there were poisoned needles in her costume. Her assistant wanted to call the cops, but Demi didn’t want to cause trouble for the crew, so she stopped them."
Sawyer added, "She didn’t even want anyone to know, which is why I didn’t mention it before. If you fire an innocent person, no one can stop you, but as a strong leader, you should uphold justice. Otherwise, who will the weak turn to?"
After calming down, Sawyer spoke smoothly, defusing Nathan’s anger and letting him judge the situation himself.
This was the right way to talk to Nathan.
"Is this true?" Nathan’s expression softened a bit.
"The needles are still with Demi, and the hospital has medical records and test results. You can send someone to check," Sawyer replied.
Nathan squinted his eyes.
Even with his smarts, Nathan couldn’t quite get Caroline’s approach.
In such situations, most people would’ve made a big deal out of it.
But Caroline chose to keep it quiet.
Was she really that big-hearted, staying silent even after being targeted and ending up in the hospital?
Nathan looked at Jack, who immediately got the hint and said, "I’ll look into it right away."
Then Nathan turned to Sawyer. "Regardless, you need to stay away from her. If there’s another incident that makes headlines, she won’t have a chance to stay."
"Yes, Nathan," Sawyer finally felt relieved.
To avoid worrying Ryan and Sophie, Caroline went home as soon as her IV drip was done.
Thanks to quick treatment and the pricey imported meds Sawyer had the doctor use, the toxic rash was under control, the rash started to fade, and the itching stopped.
However, Caroline couldn’t eat spicy or greasy food, and alcohol and coffee were a no-go.
After dinner, Sophie started showing off the dance she had learned in kindergarten, filling the house with laughter and joy.
After playing for a while, Caroline got Ryan and Sophie to wash up, then went to the study to read her script.
Sophie, in her cartoon pajamas, sneaked into Ryan’s room to "conspire".
"Ryan, why hasn't Nathan asked us out yet?" Sophie asked, her curiosity getting the best of her.
Ryan shrugged; how would he know?
"Ryan, don't just shrug. It's just the two of us. If you don't talk, it's so boring for me," Sophie complained.
"Maybe he's busy?" Ryan guessed.
Sophie nodded. "Makes sense. Nathan is a CEO, and CEOs are definitely busy. But what exactly does a CEO do?"
Sophie was curious.
Ryan thought for a moment, "Bosses manage stuff."
"Manage a lot of people?" Sophie asked.
Ryan nodded.
"More than the people in our kindergarten?" Sophie continued.
Ryan wasn't sure, as he had never been to Nathan's company, but he still nodded. After all, a company's employees should outnumber kindergarten kids, right?
"If he's so busy and has no time to ask us out, when will I get to eat lobster?" Sophie couldn't help but drool at the thought of food.
Ryan stayed silent.
"Even if Nathan has time, Mommy won't let us see him. What should we do?" Sophie sighed.
Ryan shook his head again.
"Stop shaking your head. Aren't you a genius? Think of a solution!" Sophie urged.
Ryan frowned, thinking, 'You call yourself a genius too, and you can't think of a solution. How can I?'
But as the older brother, Ryan felt he should take responsibility, so he started racking his brain.
After a while, his eyes lit up. "Sarah!"
Sophie immediately understood. "Right, we need Sarah's help. If she agrees to help, meeting Nathan won't be a problem!"
Ryan nodded.
"I want to meet Nathan not just for the food, but mainly to help Mommy find a boyfriend," Sophie tried to cover up.
Ryan said nothing, seriously doubting Sophie's claim that it wasn't about the food.
"Finding a boyfriend for Mommy is our top priority," Sophie added.
This time, Ryan nodded in agreement.
"But what if Mommy finds a boyfriend and Daddy suddenly shows up?" Sophie worried again.
Ryan frowned too; this was indeed a problem.
Sophie quickly came up with an answer. "If Daddy is handsome and rich and can buy us good food, we'll accept him; if he's ugly and poor, we won't!"
Ryan first nodded, then shook his head.
Sophie's idea was theoretically correct, but he felt something was off. Could they just reject their dad like that?
"It's settled then. We'll have Sarah arrange it, and we'll meet Nathan first," Sophie decided.
Then, with her mind full of delicious lobster and various other foods, Sophie happily went back to her room to sleep.
Having exhausted her energetic self during the day, Sophie fell asleep as soon as her head hit the pillow, with a sweet smile on her face, dreaming of devouring lobsters!
Two days later, on a warm afternoon, Sarah went to school as usual to pick up her kids.
The school gate looked like a luxury car show, with Mercedes and BMWs being the low-key options, Porsches and Maseratis being the common sights, and only Lamborghinis and Ferraris barely qualifying as luxury. In comparison, Sarah's Honda, worth just over three thousand dollars, looked particularly shabby.
To avoid embarrassing the kids, Sarah parked her car in a distant corner.
"Sarah," Sophie scampered towards Sarah.
Every time they met, Sophie would cling to Sarah for a loving hug, and her chubby, soft feeling often intoxicated Sarah. Sarah even occasionally thought of abandoning Caroline to have Ryan and Sophie all to herself.
Ryan, on the other hand, maintained his usual cool demeanor, quietly watching Sophie and Sarah's affectionate interaction from the side.
Sarah took each of their hands and slowly walked towards the car.
Once in the car, Ryan and Sophie obediently sat in their child seats and carefully fastened their seatbelts.
"Sarah, when will my mom get off work and come home?" Sophie asked.
