Chapter 124

Sophie pointed at Roxanne and accused, "It was her! She brought us the soup! Give me back my mom and Ryan!" She then lunged at Roxanne, scratching wildly. Despite the pain, Roxanne didn't dare resist or dodge, knowing Nathan's predatory gaze was locked on her. One wrong move, and she feared she wouldn't survive to make amends for Caroline and her son.

At that moment, Nathan's murderous rage was palpable to everyone. Suddenly, he turned and walked into the night, his tall figure gradually fading into the darkness.

No one dared to follow or ask where he was going.

Nathan walked alone to the riverbank, each step heavy and unsteady.

He leaned against a tree, bent over, and dry-heaved, a posture of his deepest pain. Nathan of the Kennedy Family, who had been resilient since childhood, rarely shed tears. Even in extreme sorrow, his eyes would only be misty, accompanied by dry heaving.

The last time he was this sorrowful was when he was nine years old, and the nanny who had raised him died of cancer. Since then, he had not been moved by grief.

But tonight, he completely broke down, tears pouring down his face as he vomited uncontrollably.

After a long time, he slowly straightened up.

"Dad." Sawyer found him, the only one who dared to approach Nathan.

Sawyer's call woke Nathan from his despair. There was no time for sorrow; Sophie still needed his care.

"Sway, it's dangerous; don't run around." Nathan's voice was hoarse.

"Dad, Mom, Mom..." Sawyer wailed, his piercing cries echoing through the forest, startling the night birds.

Nathan hugged Sawyer, his heart aching, but he was too overwhelmed by pain to offer any comfort.

Back at the camp, John and the other team members had already covered Caroline and Ryan with straw mats.

Nathan's flashlight beam swept across the cabins, as if searching for something.

Everyone was just silently watched him pace.

Finally, he found a worn-out short-handled iron shovel, rusty and barely usable.

Behind the cabin, Nathan began to dig, intending to bury Caroline and Ryan.

John understood Nathan wanted to dig a grave for them.

In the high heat, and with the bodies poisoned, they needed to be dealt with quickly.

The ground was covered with thorns, making digging difficult. Nathan, unaccustomed to such labor, had his hands bleeding, making little progress.

He buried his head in the digging, muttering, "I'm sorry; I couldn't protect you."

No one had ever seen Mr. Kennedy like this. They wanted to help him but were stopped by his unyielding expression.

"Mr. Kennedy, let's cremate them and take them home," John's words snapped Nathan out of his near breakdown.

Yes, they had come to find them; how could he let them rest in this foreign land?

Nathan gave up digging and started looking for firewood.

"Mr. Kennedy, please allow us to help," John mustered the courage to persuade.

Nathan said nothing.

John signaled the team to help collect firewood.

Though resources were scarce here, firewood was plentiful.

Before long, they had piled up a large stack of firewood, and the flames roared.

Just as they were about to return to the cabin to carry the bodies, they found that the bodies were gone!

Caroline and Ryan had both disappeared without a trace!

Everyone had been busy outside, and the cabin was empty!

All eyes silently fell on Nathan, full of questions.

Roxanne was terrified, her legs trembling. Could there really be ghosts? Had they turned into spirits?

Nathan was also surprised but showed no fear. If there were indeed spirits, he would be willing to talk to them and personally apologize.

What worried him was not that they had become ghosts, but that a beast might have sneaked into the cabin and taken them.

"Search immediately!" Nathan ordered decisively.

There were few flashlights, and their batteries were weak. Exploring the dense forest at night was fraught with danger.

At this time, poisonous insects and snakes were most active, with unknown dangers lurking around.

But no one cared about the danger; they plunged into the forest, searching every corner, but found nothing. Caroline and Ryan seemed to have vanished into thin air.

By dawn, there was still no result. Nathan reluctantly ordered everyone to rest and wait until daylight to discuss further.

Continuing the search with dying flashlight batteries would put everyone in peril.

Almost no one slept, their thoughts consumed by the two missing people.

Late at night, Roxanne found it even harder to sleep. The slightest noise in the room made her heart race. She got up to investigate but found nothing.

Haunted by her fears, she reassured herself that there were no ghosts and nothing to fear.

Just as she was drifting off to sleep, a cold and familiar voice whispered in her ear, "Roxanne, you owe me a life."

Roxanne's eyes snapped open, and she saw a dark figure standing before her.

She fumbled for her flashlight, and in its beam, she saw Caroline, hair disheveled, blood seeping from her mouth, her face pale and blue, standing by the bed!

"Ah!" Roxanne screamed.

"Roxanne, you made me suffer, now pay with your life!" Caroline shouted fiercely.
