Chapter 56
"The director set it up this way. Today's scene is for Demi and Sawyer," the assistant said, looking a bit defeated.
"I'm gonna go ask. William must've messed up!" Roxanne insisted.
It was Sawyer's first day on set, and Roxanne had big plans to cozy up to him, stir up some buzz, and ride his coattails to more fame.
But now, Caroline was the one paired with Sawyer for today's scene. No way Roxanne was gonna let that slide.
She stormed off to find the director. "William, what's the deal? Why don't I have a scene today?"
"Roxanne, we told everyone about today's scenes yesterday. You really don't have a scene today," William said with a smile.
"I didn't see any notification or read the script! I'm the lead actress, and now that the lead actor is here, I should be acting with him. How did it end up being that bitch Demi?" Usually, Roxanne kept her cool and was polite to Caroline in public, but now she was fuming.
William was in a tough spot.
He got why Roxanne wanted to use Sawyer's star power to boost her own, but his hands were tied because this was all Nathan's doing.
Even though Roxanne was still technically the lead actress, the new script had quietly shifted the spotlight to Caroline.
Roxanne had no clue about the major script changes; otherwise, she'd be even more relentless.
Nathan wanted Sawyer and Caroline to build their chemistry fast. So, Sawyer's first scene was set with Caroline.
Now, with Roxanne grilling him, William was at a loss. He couldn't afford to piss off Roxanne, so he tried to calm her down. "Roxanne, today's scenes are set in stone, and changing them now would be a nightmare. How about we stick to the plan for today, and I promise you'll have a scene with Sawyer tomorrow. Deal?"
Roxanne wasn't having it. "I'm the lead actress, and now that the lead actor is here, I should be acting with him. Why should I miss out?"
William was really stuck, trying to figure out a solution.
The schedule was locked in, and all the costumes and props were ready. Changing things last minute was a no-go.
Plus, this was Nathan's call, and William wasn't about to mess with that.
"Roxanne, if you really want to know, today's scenes were set by Mr. Kennedy himself," William said, feeling cornered.
"Nathan set it up? No way. He's too busy for this kind of stuff. Who are you trying to fool?" Roxanne snapped.
"If you don't believe me, call Mr. Kennedy yourself. If he says it's okay to change, I'll do it right away," William replied.
Roxanne had her doubts but wasn't about to call Nathan.
Besides, she knew she couldn't just ring up Nathan whenever she wanted. She knew her place in his eyes.
"William, are you using Mr. Kennedy to back me into a corner?" Roxanne's tone turned icy.
William sighed, "I wouldn't dare. I'm just telling you the truth. Both you and Mr. Kennedy are important, and I can't afford to upset either of you. Roxanne, please don't make this harder for me."
With William practically begging, Roxanne couldn't push him any further. And hearing it was Nathan's arrangement, she didn't dare push her luck.
So, she backed off, saying, "I'm just upset. I didn't mean to make a big deal out of this. Let Demi shoot the scene. It's just one scene."
William finally relaxed. "Thanks for understanding. I'll get back to work now."
By this time, Sawyer had already changed into his costume and looked pretty sharp.
Sawyer played the lead guy, who was female lead's lover. The second female lead was played by Caroline, who was trying to steal Sawyer away.
Now that Caroline was the lead, the plot had to change, and the lead guy and girl would eventually get married.
In this secret meeting scene, Sawyer had to show his inner longing mixed with a bit of fear, a complex emotional state.
Caroline was the dominant one, and she made the first move to kiss the anxious Sawyer.
Their eyes met, and before any words were spoken, the whole crew held their breath.
The scene was just too beautiful.
