Chapter 175 No One Will Save You
"Think you can ask questions now?" Evelyn sneered. James felt the blade press harder against his neck.
The pain and fear of getting his throat cut made him back down. "Don't do this! Let's talk."
"Alright, who sent you?" Evelyn asked, tilting her head.
She had sensed something was off in the car. If Lisa was really in trouble, she would've called. The fact they targeted her and not Matthew seemed fishy.
So, maybe Lisa wasn't in trouble; they were after her.
Due to that, she decided to play along to find out who was behind it.
"We can't reveal our employer," James said after a pause.
"Very professional," she mocked, tapping his face with the knife. "Guess you don't care about your life."
James stayed silent, lips tight.
His tense posture and throbbing temple veins showed he wasn't fearless. However, revealing his employer would ruin his reputation and future.
They all knew the rules; never spill about the employer.
"Not afraid of death, huh?" Evelyn lightly cut his neck, just enough to hurt but not deep enough to kill him.
James flinched but stayed silent.
She was about to continue when she heard a noise, glancing at the door and whispering, "Fine. If you won't talk, someone else will!"
Before he could react, she knocked him out with a blow to the neck.
She quickly tied him up with an old rope and tried to move him, but he was too heavy. She pulled the bed covers over him instead.
Just then, there was a knock at the door.
"James, you okay?" Michael called.
James had been in the room too long, and Michael thought he might've messed up. Ethan hadn't said much, but they couldn't go too far. If Evelyn got seriously hurt, it wasn't worth it.
So, Nathan sent Michael to check.
Evelyn, barefoot, hurried to the door with her dagger.
"James, Nathan said not to cripple her. James..." When there was no answer, Michael opened the door in suspicion.
The door wasn't locked, and the handle turned from the outside. The room was dim, but the bedside lamp was on. Michael saw a lump under the covers and grinned. "James, don't go too far!"
Michael wanted to join in, calling, "James, I'm talking to you! James..."
He bent over to pull back the covers, but sensed something was off when he touched them.
As he turned, he felt a pinch in his waist and froze.
His heart raced. Unable to move, he glanced around.
Just as he was about to speak, he felt a numbness at the back of his neck, panicking.
Evelyn realized stopping Michael from asking questions would make him yell, ruining her plan. She decided to handle him slowly.
Meanwhile, Nathan sensed something was wrong when Michael didn't return.
Though he doubted Evelyn could do much, he knew someone might intervene. He grabbed his gun and went upstairs.
"What are you two doing? Get out here!" Nathan shouted near the door. "If you don't come out, I'll kick your asses!"
Michael stood there, scared to make a sound.
He didn't even know how he was restrained—it was horrifying!
"James? Michael?" Nathan tentatively kicked the door, gun ready.
He kicked the door open.
No sound came from inside; not even a struggle. The dim light revealed a shadowy figure behind Nathan.
"Michael?" Nathan squinted.
He spun around and fired without looking.
As the gunshot rang out, Nathan's hand went numb and dropped the gun. He tried to kick, but Evelyn dodged and struck his leg with a crack. He wondered if his kneecap was broken.
Despite trying to stay up, he collapsed to his knees.
He wanted to see his attacker. His back felt numb, and he couldn't move. He turned his head and saw Evelyn!
He couldn't believe she had subdued him. His eyes darted around, searching for other people.
He thought, 'She must have a helper!'
"Don't bother. It's just me," Evelyn said, standing over him. "Scream all you want; no one's coming to save you."
Nathan, Michael, and James were stunned.
