Chapter 37 Only You Qualify in the Whole World
After finishing dinner, Evelyn was about to get up to clear the silverware and plates. However, he took the things from her hands again.
"I told you that you don't have to do these things." He furrowed his eyebrows and disapproved, saying, "From now on, the kitchen is off-limits for you. You are not allowed to go in."
Evelyn was somewhat helpless. "I used to cook for myself as well..."
"That was in the past. From now on, you are not allowed in the kitchen!" He neatly arranged the silverware and plates. Then, he went into the kitchen.
Soon, the sound of running water came from the kitchen.
Evelyn walked over and leaned against the doorframe of the kitchen, watching him. His sleeves were rolled up high, revealing his strong and muscular arms. His skin was exceptionally fair, but not the unhealthy kind of fair. His arms looked solid and powerful.
As she thought about how his arms had once tightly embraced her waist, her body involuntarily trembled.
"Are you planning to respond?" he asked suddenly, washing dishes.
Evelyn was momentarily taken aback and didn't understand. "Huh? What?"
He turned his head to glance at her and said casually, "About those boring things,"
Evelyn hesitated for a moment, then nodded. "Of course!"
Although all those were false pieces of news, they still affected her reputation. Besides, she couldn't just think about herself now. She had to consider her future with Samuel. She would never let Samuel be tainted because of her.
"What are you planning to do? Do you want to clarify?" Samuel continued to ask.
Evelyn shook her head. "There's no point in clarifying this kind of thing. It will only attract more attention. If I stand up and argue with them, I'll be falling into their trap."
By that point, the public might perceive her as angry and defensive, assuming the allegations were true. Perhaps only a handful would side with her. Nevertheless, her time and reputation would suffer. How could she remain with the new company? How would her colleagues view her?
Liam and Vivian simply needed to present the alleged facts and invest some money to sway public opinion. They didn't have to confront her directly. She couldn't endure the toll on her time and reputation, and she refused to expend energy on them.
Samuel had finished washing the utensils and dishes and rinsed his hands. Then he walked towards her carefully wiping his fingers, and asked, "Well... do you need any help?"
"No need." Evelyn saw him open his arms towards her, and she reached out her hand willingly, embracing him. Then she looked up at him and said, "If I can't handle such a small matter, what qualification do I have to be Mr. Whitman's wife?"
Samuel smiled affectionately and kissed her forehead gently. "In the whole world, only you are qualified to be my wife."
Whether he was coaxing her or not, she liked hearing such words! She was truly happy.
As a reward, Evelyn tiptoed and planted a kiss on his lips.
Originally, this was just a small reward. However, it became evident that he wasn't content with merely a brief kiss. He wrapped his hand around the back of her head, intensifying the embrace. In doing so, he turned this small reward into a bigger one.
…
Liam, who had just finished the meeting, returned to the CEO's office at Liavian Perfumes. As soon as he entered, he saw Harry waiting for him inside.
"How did it go?" Liam adjusted his tie, a hint of smugness in his voice as he spoke. The grin on his face was unmistakable; he was certain Evelyn would opt for a private settlement before the trial.
"Ms. Taylor insists on seeing you in court," Harry said succinctly.
Liam, in the midst of reaching for his coffee, froze. His hand halted mid-air. He turned to Harry, his expression puzzled. "What did you say?"
"She rejected your proposal to settle privately and insisted on suing you," Harry replied.
"She thinks she can win? Does she have any new evidence?" Liam squinted, puzzled.
Harry shook his head, "I'm not sure. But Ms. Taylor's attitude in her words is very resolute. However, based on the evidence we currently have, our company is almost guaranteed to win. So, Mr. Scott, you don't need to worry too much."
He worried. How could he not worry!
Harry wasn't worried because he only saw surface-level evidence. Liam understood best that the company's product development over the years was closely tied to Evelyn's efforts.
However, her abrupt departure without giving him a chance to retain her left him unsettled. With matters reaching this point, peaceful resolution seemed out of reach.
However, Evelyn knew she had no chance of winning. Why wouldn't she back down? Did Neogenito Fragrances give her some confidence, or did she still have some ace up her sleeve?
Liam was puzzled, but he couldn't find an answer for the time being.
"Alright, I understand. When is the trial?"
"Next week."
"You go prepare. Give her a few more calls and say that, for the sake of our past relationship, we can accept a private settlement. But your words should leave room for negotiation. Do you understand?"
Harry was somewhat confused. "I understand, but..."
"You can go now."
Harry left with a puzzled look on his face. Just as he left, Vivian walked in directly.
She never knocked on the door when entering the CEO's office. Throughout the company, it was common knowledge that Vivian held the title of director of the R&D department. Moreover, it was widely speculated that she would soon become Liam's wife.
However, the recent gossip news was quite interesting. Everyone was secretly keeping an eye on this event.
Now, Vivian walked into the CEO's office gracefully. People in the company couldn't help but gossip in low voices.
"Hey, have you seen the online leaks? It's about Mr. Scott and Mrs. Scott."
"Who's Mrs. Scott?"
"Hey, it's Ms. Reed! Do I need to explain it further?"
"I understand, I understand. The article discusses a third party who interfered in their relationship for many years. That woman left, betrayed Mr. Scott, and also took our company's confidential information. Her name is..."
"Evelyn Taylor!"
"Yes, Evelyn! Oh, I remember she used to work for our company. But she would come to the headquarters sometimes. She seemed to be a technician?"
"That's her. She looks pretty. But I didn't expect her to be this kind of person. I noticed some ambiguity between her and Mr. Scott before, but I didn't expect her to betray Mr. Scott."
"You're wrong. She and Mr. Scott were planning to get married. I was wondering how Ms. Reed wasn't angry when their relationship was so obvious."
"What? Getting married?!" Everyone was shocked.
"Yes, yes, I overheard them saying they were going to schedule a time to apply for a marriage license."
"What? Tell us when did this happen? Could there be more to this story?"
The members of the office's WhatsApp group chat were brimming with excitement.. People had an infinite passion for gossip. Especially when the protagonist was right in front of them.
Vivian entered the office and cast a quick glance at the people still working outside. Every now and then, she noticed their eyes wandering in her direction, which irritated her. She promptly closed the blinds.
'They are just a bunch of wastes!'
"Liam, it's been a while since you last went out with me." She leaned against Liam and coquettishly said, "I've been so bored lately."
"You still have the mood to go out? Do you not know the current situation in the company? Do you not know what I'm facing?" Liam drank a large sip of coffee impatiently. "Do you know that Evelyn has decided to sue us?"
