Chapter 78 Boyfriend?
Evelyn sneaked back into the room, trying to act casual.
"You're back." She turned to close the door. Before she could even glance back, she heard a voice behind her, causing a sudden tightening in her throat.
"You're awake." she turned around to look at Cathy, who was still in her nightwear, sitting on the couch outside, gazing at her as if waiting for her with a certain demeanor.
"Did I wake you up? Oh, I just wanted to go downstairs to throw away some garbage and grab breakfast, and I didn't expect to disturb you. I'm sorry!" These words had already been rehearsed in her mind and came out effortlessly.
"Yes!" with a deep grunt, Cathy said, "Keep spinning your yarn!"
"What yarn?" she blinked. "Oh, I woke up too early, so tired. I might as well go back to sleep for a bit!"
Saying this, stretching lazily, she made a move towards the inner room.
Cathy was quick on her feet, extending her leg, promptly blocking her path. "You're not getting away!"
In resignation, Evelyn chuckled, "What are you talking about? I'm going to sleep!"
"Don't even think about it! Come clean, where were you sneaking off to last night?" she demanded, as if interrogating.
Evelyn pursed her lips, marveling at her choice of words. "Sneaking off? With whom? I was with you the whole night! I took a shower yesterday, and when I came out, you were already asleep. I rested for a while and then went to sleep too. I slept later than you and woke up earlier. That's all. I wasn't 'sneaking off'. Why do you make it sound so ominous?"
As she reached out to push her away, Cathy stood firm. "I woke up at one in the morning, and you weren't there. You dare say you were asleep? What time did you get up? You got up before one, took out the trash, and have been busy tossing it from then till now, right?"
Evelyn remained silent.
She hadn't anticipated Cathy waking up so early.
Not only was she awake but judging by her posture, it seemed she had been waiting for Evelyn all this while.
"Have you spent the night awake?" Leaning in to gaze at her face, Evelyn saw the severity of her dark circles, a profound sense of guilt washing over her.
"Don't divert the topic! Do you realize that I have been staying up all night, waiting for you and calling you, only to find your phone switched off? You truly have some nerve. I was planning to call the police at daybreak! Speak up, or you're not going anywhere today!" Blocking the doorway, Cathy appeared resolute.
Evelyn remained silent.
"I mean, I woke up at one in the night, and couldn't fall back asleep. So, I went out to take out the trash, then impulsively decided to go for a run in the night. I got lost while running and I didn't find my way back until a while later. Do you believe me?" Gazing cautiously at Cathy, Evelyn spun a lie that she didn't even believe herself.
However, upon seeing Cathy's gaze filled with resentment, Evelyn knew she didn't buy her at all!
Letting out a heavy sigh, she abandoned the idea of entering the inner room, returning to the sofa to sit down instead, pondering before stating, "I went to meet a friend."
"A friend?" Cathy followed. "Which friend? You said it's your first time here, and you don't know anyone. Where did you meet this friend, and why did you meet so late? You..."
Evelyn looked at her helplessly and said, "Cathy, you're interrogating me like I was a criminal! I admit that I should have told you, but I also have my privacy."
"I'm not trying to invade your privacy, but it's your first time accompanying me on a business trip. The terrain here is complex, and so are the relationships beyond. If something happens to you, how can I explain it to your family and the company? I can't just ignore your safety!"
Cathy's concern was evident.
It was precisely because Evelyn knew that Cathy cared about her that she didn't feel too annoyed and allow Cathy to continue questioning.
However, it wasn't the right time to reveal her relationship with Samuel to Cathy. She would have to apologize to Cathy later for keeping it a secret.
"Don't worry, my friend is not from here. He came from another city, and he happened to have something to do here, so we met." Evelyn paused, thinking about how to explain. "The reason we met so late is that he just finished his work, and we all had our things to do during the day. So..."
Although the explanation sounded a bit far-fetched, it was still more plausible than getting lost while jogging at night.
Cathy nodded thoughtfully, and then something else came to her mind. "A man?"
Evelyn didn't say anything. There was no need to answer. Seeing Evelyn's expression, Cathy guessed.
"Boyfriend?" She asked.
"Well, you could say that," Evelyn replied.
Whether it was a boyfriend or a husband, it was more or less the same.
"Okay," Cathy sighed in relief.
Evelyn found it amusing to see Cathy's reaction. "Why do I feel like you're happy that I have a boyfriend?" She acted as if a mother was happy that her daughter had found someone.
"To be honest, I am happy. If you have a boyfriend, it means that you probably won't..."
Cathy paused, not finishing her sentence.
Seeing her hesitant expression, Evelyn thought of what she wanted to say at the fragrance-tasting event last night.
It seemed to be something difficult to bring up.
At that moment, she didn't dwell much on it, but now as the topic resurfaced, Evelyn speculated and inquired, "What do you mean?"
"Never mind, just trivial gossip and hearsay." Dismissing it with a wave of her hand, she felt a pang of embarrassment for once harboring doubts and beliefs.
Yet even without her saying it, Evelyn had likely surmised. "Are you implying that I gained entry here because I have a backer and I'm associated with a high-ranking individual at Neogenito Fragrances, right?"
"No, that's not what I said," Cathy quickly explained.
Evelyn laughed, "I know you didn't say it, but that's probably how it's being spread around the company."
"Not exactly!" Since it was already out in the open, there was no need to hide anything. Cathy said, "I know that Nasir personally ordered you to stay. Of course, I have already known about your abilities. However, at that time, I thought you got in because of your background."
Listening to her, Evelyn smiled faintly. She wasn't angry at all. She knew it was normal for everyone to think that way. It was precisely because of this that she didn't want to announce her relationship with Samuel publicly. She wanted to prove her abilities and not be associated with Samuel or the Jones family in any way.
Cathy continued, "But I don't think you have a background in Neogenito Fragrances. Nasir is the top person there, and I can see that there's no special relationship between him and you. But for him to protect you so fiercely, it's probably because of your connections with the Seraphian Group."
Evelyn was taken aback. She didn't expect Cathy to come so close to the truth.
