Chapter 217 The Great Scandal

When Evelyn got home, Samuel still wasn't back. She quickly freshened up, slipped into some comfy clothes, and made herself a hot cup of coffee before sitting down to check out the envelope.

Nicholas had mentioned something about it, but Evelyn didn't ask for details, so she had no clue what it was about.

As she opened it and skimmed through, the name Liam Scott jumped out at her. Was this about Liam? She read more carefully and was shocked to find it was an investigation into Liam's background, especially his relationship with his mom.

The file said his mom was Ava Mitchell, with all her current details and more. It even mentioned that Rosen was introduced to Evelyn by Ava. But the kicker was that there was a paternity test between Liam and Ava at the end.

Evelyn was floored. She'd been with Liam for so long and had no idea about his past. She always thought he was an orphan.

She admired Liam's hard work and dedication, thinking he was pushing through despite a tough start. Little did she know, he had this huge secret.

The name Ava Mitchell rang a bell, but Evelyn couldn't place it. The info said Ava was a former famous actress who even won an Oscar. Later, she ceased acting and married Jacob Redwood, the second son of the Redwood family. However, no one knew that Ava had a child outside of her marriage.

Nicholas had downplayed it. For Liam, it might not be a big deal, but for Ava, it was huge.

The Redwood family of Emerald Bay was a wealthy and prestigious clan, primarily engaged in commerce. Their status as an elite family was the result of generations of relentless effort, and the family itself was vast and intricate.

Ava married Jacob from the Redwood family, but the real power was with the first son, Aiden Redwood. Jacob and Ava only had a daughter together. Later, Jacob had an affair and a son. Even though Ava kept her dignity during their marriage, their relationship was far from loving.

Ava, with her years of experience, had connections and strategies to help Jacob in business. Their relationship was more about mutual benefits.

But if Jacob found out Ava had a son named Liam before they got married and had been secretly in touch with him, the fallout would be huge.

Evelyn clutched the papers, deep in thought.

Evelyn knew that it was just a few pages, but they held a lot of secrets.

Liam had kept this secret for years, and even Evelyn, who was close to him, had no idea about his past.

This wasn't something an ordinary private detective could dig up. Sure, the Jones family had the power to find out, but Evelyn hadn't asked for help. So why did Nicholas give this to her?

After thinking it over, Evelyn decided to set it aside for now. It was a useful tool, but not something she needed to use right away.

Evelyn put the file bag on the shelf, tidied up a bit, and noticed the two wooden figurines she had placed there. They still looked cute and lively, bringing back some good memories.

She had originally planned to carve a state mascot for her grandfather's birthday, but with Alex not showing up for work and the wood she wanted being unavailable, the plan fell through. The real kicker was that Alex had disappeared and couldn't be reached. Evelyn had asked the shopkeeper about him a couple more times, but he had no idea where Alex was either.

Fiddling with the figurines, Evelyn muttered, "Little wooden figures, where do you think Alex has gone?"

When Liam got home, he couldn't resist calling Ava. After two failed attempts, he figured she was busy and didn't dare to call a third time. He checked today's sales data on the computer, browsed the internet a bit, but couldn't sit still. He was super anxious.

Sales were still dropping, and although the return rate had gone down a bit, it was still pretty high. Liam had already made his move, and there was no turning back now. He intentionally delayed customer service responses to try and save the company's reputation while minimizing losses.

At the same time, Liam hired a few new employees, pushed the lab to speed up their work, and planned to launch some new products to replace the controversial ones.

After Liam had spun around more than twenty times, his phone finally rang. He immediately grabbed it and saw that it was indeed a call from Ava. He quickly answered, "Mom."

"Shut up!" A low, reprimanding voice came from the other end.

Liam was taken aback but quickly got the hint. He changed his tone, "Ms. Mitchell..."

"Have I been too lenient with you? Don't you have any sense of propriety lately? When did I tell you to call me?What have I told you before?" Ava sounded angry, though she was trying to keep her voice down.

"I..." Liam felt guilty under her scolding.

Ava had indeed told him not to call her directly but to leave a message if needed, and she would get back to him when she could. She also insisted he call her Ms. Mitchell to avoid giving others any leverage.

Liam had followed these rules before, but recently, Ava had been more lenient, offering advice and meeting him more often. So, he had gotten a bit too comfortable and forgot about Ava's sensitivities.

Unable to argue back, Liam listened meekly. "I'm sorry, I was wrong, Ms. Mitchell," he apologized in a subdued tone.

After venting her frustration, Ava took a few deep breaths and softened her tone a bit. "Alright, let's get to the point."

"I feel uneasy; I can't shake the feeling that Evelyn has more tricks up her sleeve. Could she be plotting something else against me?" Though everything seemed fine at the moment, Liam still felt uneasy, with a strong sense of foreboding.

"Evelyn? What does she have to do with this? Have you provoked her?" Ava was surprised.

Being busy lately and not paying attention to online trends, Ava was unaware of the recent buzz and discussions. So, Liam's mention caught her off guard.
