Chapter 199 Baffling
After Evelyn rolled up, she saw it was a swanky private club, all fancy and stuff. She signed in, and someone took her upstairs.
It wasn't a private room; the whole second floor was empty. There was this glass panoramic circular restaurant, super unique and romantic, with someone playing the violin. The music was so chill.
"Evelyn!" Lisa waved and called out.
Even if she hadn't, Evelyn would've spotted her. Besides the waiters, Lisa was the only one up there.
"Lisa!" Evelyn walked over and hugged her. After they let go, Lisa smiled and said, "Mr. Parker's running late. He asked me to apologize."
"No worries," Evelyn smiled. "Honestly, no need to be so formal. He already thanked me that day."
"It's not about being formal; it's the right thing to do," Lisa shook her head. "You have no idea about Jackson's status. You saved his son. If he didn't show some appreciation, it'd be a bad look."
Dignity can be a weird thing sometimes.
"By the way, is Ethan okay?" She had to ask, just to be sure.
Lisa nodded. "Thanks to you. I was freaking out when it happened. I had no clue what was wrong with Ethan. It scared me, but luckily you were there! Otherwise, Jackson would've definitely blamed me."
"What does that have to do with you?" Evelyn sipped her lemon water, confused. "Did you order the food that caused the allergic reaction?"
Lisa shook her head. "No, Avery did."
"You mean Ethan's mom?" Evelyn guessed their relationship wasn't great but didn't want to pry into Avery and Jackson's private matters.
"Yeah," Lisa sighed, figuring she had time to spare, so she started gossiping with her. "Avery wanted to use Ethan to fix things with Jackson. I thought it might work, but I was wrong. Evelyn, I'm sorry for what Avery said about you that day."
Evelyn didn't take it to heart. What's done is done.
"It's not your fault. But I get it, because of her mistake, Ethan was in danger. If Avery hadn't found someone else to blame, it would've been even harder for her. Plus, worrying too much can make people act crazy." Evelyn shrugged. She understood Avery's actions but couldn't forgive her behavior.
Blaming Evelyn to dodge Jackson's anger was just low.
"No, you don't get it. She doesn't care about Ethan; she only cares about herself. I see that now."
"What?" Evelyn was shocked.
Lisa looked pissed. "If she really cared about Ethan, she'd know about his allergies. When Ethan had the incident, her first worry wasn't about him but about whether Jackson would hate her and cut her off. In her heart, there's no child."
After this whole mess, Lisa totally saw through Avery. All that sympathy she had? Gone. She cut ties with her.
"Maybe she just forgot for a sec, or maybe she doesn't know Ethan that well. Their relationship seems super strained, like, heading for a breakup, right?" Evelyn didn't really want to dive into this drama, but here they were.
Lisa shook her head and smirked. "They were never married, so no divorce to talk about."
"Actually, Ethan was part of Avery's plan," Lisa sighed.
Staring out the window, lost in thought, Lisa knew all this because she used to consider Avery a friend and even felt sorry for her.
"Planned? The kid isn't hers?"
" No, he is! Avery's been obsessed with Jackson, like, crazy in love. She swore she'd marry him, but Jackson wasn't into her. Later, she pulled some tricks and got pregnant. She thought having a kid would make Jackson marry her, but he didn't want the kid at all. Avery refused to abort and insisted on having the baby. She took the kid to Jackson, and he let the kid stay, gave her some money, but still wouldn't marry her. This went on for years. Ethan grew up, and Avery tried to use him to get closer to Jackson." Lisa paused, took a sip of water. "Evelyn, I thought Avery had it rough. She loves Jackson so much, so I wanted to help her. Helping her and Jackson get close seemed like a good thing. Ethan needs a complete family. But after that day at the hospital, I get why Jackson's been rejecting her for so long."
Evelyn stayed quiet, not sure what to say.
She came for lunch and ended up with this wild story. But thinking about it, she got why Avery didn't know about Ethan's allergies.
Avery didn't care about Ethan. She was using him to keep Jackson around!
Evelyn couldn't wrap her head around it!
After chatting with Lisa for a bit, they sat in silence, no one else around.
The place wasn't super remote, but it wasn't in the city center either. Watching the busy crowd below, Evelyn asked, "Is it not lunchtime yet? Is business here bad? Why's it just us?"
Lisa laughed. "Jackson's treating you to lunch. No way he'd pick a place with bad business! This place is usually packed, but it's booked out today!"
"Booked out?"
"Yeah, to thank you! Now you get what I meant when I said Jackson's powerful, right?"
"This seems a bit over the top!"
It's just a meal, why go all out and book the whole place?
"For Jackson, this is nothing!" Lisa paused, then added, "Plus, you saved his son's life!"
"You're right." Just as Lisa finished, someone else chimed in.
