Chapter 96 Being Her Sentinel
Evelyn had been quite busy lately. Her maple, a specially cultivated plant that was not very large, had arrived, neatly placed in her laboratory.
After returning from Tedia, Cathy quickly applied for a separate laboratory for Evelyn. Although the space wasn't large, it was equipped with all the necessary instruments. Cathy's sudden change surprised the higher-ups and left the employees jaw-dropped.
Employees couldn't help but gossip, feeling a sense of unfairness in the situation.
No one in the company had ever possessed their independent laboratory within less than three months of joining, let alone someone like Evelyn, who was pushed in without following the standard recruitment channels. Combined with the rumors surrounding her, it only amplified suspicions about her.
In response, Cathy couldn't be bothered to explain further, offering just one statement. "I will extend the same test that Evelyn underwent. Whoever willingly applies for evaluation and successfully passes, will have an independent laboratory just like Evelyn's."
With this singular declaration, all criticisms were instantly silenced.
While the second test wasn't visible to most, many had witnessed the first test. It was a fair test, and while many struggled to discern, Evelyn quickly identified the issues. The mere mention of the second test instilled fear in people.
No one volunteered for the test, doubting their ability to pass. They decided to focus on their regular duties instead.
Despite the external commotion, once Evelyn immersed herself in the laboratory, she paid no attention to the outside world.
During her time at Tedia, she had a spark of inspiration. It was just a vague idea back then, needing a clear outline. It wasn't until she found the grafted maple at the flower base that she felt she had found what she was looking for.
Cleaning, drying, cutting, dissolving, refining, the series of processes kept her busy to the point of exhaustion. It wasn't until late at night when she felt the strain in her neck, that she finally paused.
She found herself missing Laura. They used to work together, with Laura assisting and Evelyn leading the formulations. Their collaboration was smooth and efficient.
However...
Liam steadfastly refused to let Laura go, but upon glancing at the date, Evelyn's furrowed brow relaxed.
"Laura, do you have time to grab a bite to eat?" Taking out her phone, Evelyn dialed her number.
Thirty minutes later, at a restaurant near Laura's home, delicious steaks were placed in front of them, yet they sat in silence.
After a while, it was Laura who spoke first, breaking the silence, "Let's eat!"
She picked up her knife and fork, taking a bite forcefully, as if venting something.
Observing her, Evelyn followed suit. They used to eat together like this before. Laura had spent much more time with her than Liam had.
No one spoke much until they were almost done with their meal. Evelyn wiped her mouth and pulled out a contract from her bag, pushing it towards Laura. "Take your time to look it over. If there's anything you're not satisfied with, we can discuss it. Welcome aboard!"
Laura glanced at the document. It was an employment contract from Neogenito Fragrances.
However, she just looked at it and shook her head, showing no intention of reaching for it.
"What's wrong?" Assuming she hadn't terminated the contract, Evelyn inquired, "Don't you want to continue working with me?"
"Of course. Working in this field with you is the happiest thing for me. I can learn a lot from you, and I enjoy formulating fragrances."
After a moment of thought, Evelyn said, "If I recall correctly, from the day you submitted your resignation letter, regardless of Liam's agreement, the time has come for you to resign automatically."
Legally, even if Liam disagreed, he couldn't forcibly restrict her.
"Yes, it is indeed time." Laura sighed. "But my mom won't let me resign."
Evelyn remained silent. She hadn't expected any family matters to be involved. "Your mom..."
"Liam has visited my home and met my mom. She trusts him a lot, thinking he's a good boss and that I'm being ungrateful. Besides, he gave me a raise, so she's even more adamant about me staying." Leaning back, she looked up at the sky. "I've thought it over. If he's willing to support me as a slacker, then so be it!"
"Laura, you shouldn't think like that. You're undermining yourself."
Superficially, she appeared to be passing time, indulging in idle pleasures and easy gains. However, the prime of her golden opportunities had slipped away, dissipating the accumulation of experiences and missing out on the best developmental period. For her, the costs outweighed the benefits.
Moreover, because Evelyn desired a brighter future for Laura and regarded her sincerely as a friend, she harbored an earnest intention to depart together with her.
"But my mom disagrees." Laura glanced at her, looking helpless.
Evelyn replied, "I don't think you're someone who just follows the elders without your own opinions."
This wasn't a major issue. Laura's mother disagreed because she believed that Liam provided good treatment. However, if she joint Neogenito Fragrances, her initial salary might not match her previous earnings, but the prospects for growth were certainly promising. With effective communication with her mother, there should be no irrationality about this matter.
After staring at her for a moment, Laura suddenly burst into laughter. "Okay, I was just teasing you! Actually, I don't want to leave on my own."
Hearing this response, Evelyn was even more surprised. "Why?"
Laura had always been firm in her decisions, willing to follow Evelyn wherever she went. It hadn't been long since then, and Evelyn couldn't believe Laura would suddenly change her mind, especially not because of promises of a raise from Liam.
"Because I've realized that staying here can help you more than being by your side." She spoke slowly and deliberately.
Evelyn was puzzled. "What do you mean?"
"Since they returned from Tedia, Vivian has presented two new perfume formulas. The lab has been busy formulating them, and Liam values them highly, suggesting a promising future," Sitting upright, Laura spoke seriously.
"So, how does this relate to helping me?"
"I want to assess the quality of these two new products and observe any tricks they might play. If they intend to plot against you, I could discern it promptly and alert you." In recent days, she had been contemplating about it. Instead of aiding her as she did before, it was better for her to remain here and be her sentinel.
