Chapter 207 Jumping Down from Here
The swankiest five-star hotel in town, perched on the sixty-sixth floor, gave one a killer view of the whole city.
Honestly, with Liam's bank account, he didn't usually splurge here. The few times he did, it was because clients dragged him along. Today, though Evelyn had invited him, he was feeling a bit jittery.
Liam couldn't quite figure out what was going on in Evelyn's head. Was she open to giving him another shot, testing him, or still holding a grudge? Either way, after all these years together, he figured if he put in the effort, there might still be a chance to patch things up.
Liam had dressed to impress in a sharp beige suit, looking every bit the gentleman. He wa already a good-looking guy; his careful grooming made him even more striking.
He showed up early. The hotel was big on privacy. Whether it was because he arrived too early or because the place was simply lacking patrons today, he seemed to notice no one else around.
That was fine by him. It meant he could have a quiet, romantic dinner with Evelyn.
Yesterday had been a bust. He'd planned everything out, but a bunch of environmental officials had thrown a wrench in the works. He didn't even get to see Evelyn, so today he had to make up for it.
Liam waited for about an hour, nervously checking the time, worried Evelyn might bail.
Just as he was about to call her, he heard the click of high heels.
He looked up and was floored.
He'd never seen Evelyn like this. Her long hair was down, with soft curls falling over her shoulders. She wore a knitted dress that hugged her figure, topped with a beige cashmere coat. Liam could tell she was decked out in the latest high-end fashion.
Even in such a simple outfit, Evelyn's beauty was undeniable. Her pearl earrings and necklace were the perfect touch, making her skin glow. He'd been with her for years but had never seen her quite like this.
"You..." Liam was speechless for a moment. When he saw Evelyn reaching for the chair, he snapped out of it, quickly standing up to pull it out for her. He waved off the waiter, took her coat, and hung it up before sitting back down.
"You look amazing today!" Liam couldn't help but blurt out.
Evelyn smiled. "Oh, so I've never looked amazing before?"
Liam felt a bit awkward. "No, that's not what I meant! You've always been beautiful. I just didn't appreciate it. That was my fault."
"Evelyn, how have you been lately?" Liam asked, trying to sound genuinely concerned when she didn't respond to his compliment.
"Well, it's quite good, except for the occasional disturbance from certain individuals." she said, waving her hand like she was shooing away flies.
Liam knew Evelyn was taking a jab at him, but he was ready for it. He'd braced himself for some serious ribbing today. It didn't matter, though. If there was even a sliver of a chance she'd change her mind, he could handle the mockery.
"I know I've messed up in the past. I hurt you a lot because I was fooled. I regret it deeply, and I really want to apologize," Liam said, trying to sound as sincere as possible.
"Sincere?" Evelyn scoffed. "I don't see it."
Getting desperate, Liam asked, "What do you want from me? Just tell me, and I'll do it!"
"Is that so?" Evelyn's lips curled into a sly smile, looking almost enchanting.
Liam was taken aback, then saw Evelyn pointing outside with her delicate fingers, saying, "Jump from here."
"What?" Liam thought he must've misheard.
"You said you were sincere, right? So here's your chance. Jump from here, and I'll forgive you," Evelyn said, still smiling.
Her eyes were smiling, but they felt icy, staring at Liam with indifference.
Liam glanced outside. They were on the sixty-sixth floor, and the view was stunning. But as he looked down, a wave of dizziness hit him. Jumping from here? He'd be a splatter on the pavement.
"Evelyn, stop joking. I really want to apologize. How can you..." Liam's face turned pale, clearly not willing to jump.
"Not willing to jump? Just say it! Why talk about sincerity?" Evelyn teased.
It was obvious Liam wouldn't jump. Even pretending to was beyond his courage, which truly disappointed Evelyn.
"I..." Liam's forehead was sweating. He hadn't expected to feel so cornered before even starting the conversation. He never realized how sharp Evelyn could be, and it made him nervous.
"Have you ordered yet?" Evelyn asked casually, looking at him.
"Not yet!" Liam quickly replied, forcing a smile. "I was waiting for you. What would you like to eat? Feel free to choose."
He signaled for the waiter, and Evelyn took the menu, flipping through it nonchalantly. She glanced at him. "Choose freely? Are you treating?"
"I'm treating!" Liam said, trying to sound generous.
He knew the prices here were steep, but it was still within his budget. If he could win Evelyn back and reunite with her, the Jones family's support would make money a non-issue. So, he was willing to spend.
With a hint of sarcasm, Evelyn remarked, "So generous! In the past, whenever I suggested eating out, you always said outside food wasn't clean and lacked the taste of home. Now you're so generous?"
She pointed at a few signature dishes on the menu without asking for his input and handed it back.
Only then did Evelyn look at Liam and ask, "Speak up, what exactly have you been trying to accomplish these past two days?"
Hearing this, Liam immediately perked up, moistened his dry throat, and looked at Evelyn with deep affection. "Evelyn, can we start over?"
