Chapter 197 Seduced by a Woman
Outta curiosity, Evelyn leaned in and saw it was Henry calling!
She shot a glance at Samuel, who looked kinda annoyed but still picked up, "Yo, what's up?"
Maybe it was his frosty look or his icy tone, but Henry was shook. He had a ton to say but suddenly clammed up, just staring wide-eyed.
Evelyn couldn't help but chuckle at Henry's face on the screen. It was pretty hilarious.
‘Henry's timing was way off, given Samuel's bad mood. Calling now and even going for a video call? Poor Henry,’ Evelyn thought.
"A chick?" Henry's ears were sharp. Even though it was a faint sound, he caught it. Suddenly, he found his voice and started accusing, "Samuel, you got a chick with you? Looks like Sophia was right, and some girl really got you hooked!"
Samuel's face darkened. "What did you say?"
Henry was startled again, instinctively shutting up, but then thought better of it.
Henry was here to stand up for Sophia and wasn't gonna back down!
Gathering his courage, he went on, "Did I mess up? You've got a girl with you, huh? Want to give me a tour of your room? Why did you leave without a heads-up? Anything sketchy going on?"
Shady stuff?! Evelyn narrowed her eyes. She and Samuel were legit married!
From the convo, Evelyn figured Henry was tied to Sophia. Was he whining to Samuel for his sister?
"Henry," Samuel called out, his face unchanged but his eyes colder, making Henry uneasy.
Henry gulped. "What?"
"Do you wanna die?"
Henry and Evelyn went silent.
After a few seconds, Henry wailed, "Samuel, you can't pin this on me! You blocked Sophia, she couldn't reach you, so she came crying to me. She's driving me nuts!"
"That's your sister," Samuel said, cold as ice.
"You're heartless!" Henry exclaimed.
Totally in sync.
"Heartlessness is for humans only," Samuel shot back.
"What do you mean?" Henry blinked, confused.
Evelyn sighed inwardly. ‘Heartlessness was for animals, but Samuel was saying Henry wasn't even human.‘ Samuel's sarcasm was getting clearer to Evelyn, who felt lucky he hadn't used it on her. Otherwise, she'd have divorced him ages ago.
"It's nothing. Got any more to say? If not, I'm hanging up," Samuel said, ready to end the call.
"What about Sophia? I can't deal with her if she keeps bugging me. Are you really gonna block her forever?" In Henry's mind, Samuel couldn't possibly cut off Sophia for good. He probably just wanted some peace for a bit. Sophia was stubborn, and ignoring her might be the best move, but Henry couldn't handle her constant nagging.
"Let's talk about it later," Samuel said, ice-cold.
"But..." Before Henry could finish, Samuel cut him off, "Henry."
"What?" Henry felt a chill run down his spine.
"Don't video call me again," Samuel said.
"Why?" Henry felt the sting coming but couldn't stop himself.
"You're ugly." Samuel hung up, clean and sharp.
Evelyn was stunned for a couple of seconds before bursting into laughter.
Was it really okay to roast Henry like that? Samuel's snarky comments must've made him a lot of enemies, but he didn't seem to care.
Watching Samuel's calls was like watching a comedy flick. Evelyn couldn't even laugh out loud, having accidentally made a noise earlier that Henry caught instantly.
Oh, Evelyn suddenly remembered Henry accusing Samuel of being seduced by a woman. She made a mental note to get back at Henry for that later!
"Enjoying yourself?" Samuel glanced at Evelyn, who was laughing on the sofa with a pillow covering her face, shoulders shaking with suppressed giggles.
"Not bad." Sitting up straight, Evelyn thought for a moment, then laughed. "I just feel like, dealing with your family isn't easy!"
At least they had some kind of relationship. Samuel's blunt way of talking could be tough to handle if he wasn't a friend. Better not provoke him!
"Is it tough?" Leaning down, hands on the sofa, he trapped her between him and the couch. "Don't worry. You don't need to be close with my family. You just need to be with me!"
Evelyn fell silent. What was this sudden declaration of affection all about?
"About Sophia," Samuel paused, looking at Evelyn, "aren't you jealous?"
Evelyn was puzzled.
Why was he still hung up on this? Samuel should be happy with Evelyn's trust and lack of jealousy.
But looking at Samuel's expression, she felt something was off.
After some serious thought, Evelyn tentatively asked, "Should I be jealous?"
Samuel's expression immediately darkened. What did she mean by 'should'?
"Shouldn't you decide that for yourself?" Samuel said, clearly annoyed.
Evelyn was confused, as she was only asking because she didn't know. With his unpredictable temperament, she didn't know what kind of answer he was looking for.
Licking her lips, Evelyn cautiously said, "You need to be honest about your relationship with her and any exes. Promise me no more affairs or getting involved with family, friends' sisters, or anything like that, okay?"
As he saw Evelyn's serious and jealous expression, Samuel's demeanor softened.
However, before he could respond and reassure her, she asked, "Is that okay?"
Samuel fell silent.
