Chapter 88 Discarding Me After Use?

He responded quite quickly but also very briefly, with just one word "Okay".

Upon catching sight of his return, Evelyn gleamed with joy, slipping off her shoes and lounging on the couch as she messaged him.

Evelyn: [I visited the nursery today and finally found what I've been searching for.]

Samuel: [Maple?]

Staring at the words on the phone, her smile froze. She pursed her lips, then replied, full of resentment.

Evelyn: [You already knew? How dull.]

Samuel: [I can see it in the account.] Following this sentence, he added a shrug emoji, looking somewhat helpless.

After a brief gaze, Evelyn grasped the underlying message that he couldn't feign ignorance about these matters.

Indeed, considering the substantial expense involved, it necessitated proper documentation and approval processes through the financial and managerial channels. Besides, a sequential reporting structure was anticipated, so the promptness of this information reaching him took her by surprise.

It was evident how vast and formidable his information network was!

Probably noticing her long delay in responding, he proactively inquired.

Samuel: [What's wrong?]

Evelyn: [It's nothing. When are you going back?] Her fingers moved swiftly, occasionally lifting her eyelids to glance at Cathy.

Cathy was engrossed in her laptop, her fingers moving just as swiftly.

However, she was busy with emails and typing and was naturally too preoccupied to pay attention to what Evelyn was doing.

Glancing back at her phone, she saw his response, several lines long.

Samuel: [No rush.]

Samuel: [Are you in such a hurry to chase me away?]

Samuel: [Discard me after use?]

Evelyn was speechless. She understood he wanted to stay here longer with her, but what did he mean by 'Discard me after use?' How had he been used up and thrown away?

This person was becoming increasingly unpredictable!

After a moment's thought, she deliberately mimicked his tone in her reply.

Evelyn: [Have I worn you out?]

Samuel couldn't help but chuckle for a moment, then swiftly responded even faster.

Samuel: [How about trying again?]

Evelyn: [Okay.]

As he gazed at those few words, he could almost envision Evelyn holding her phone, her face displaying a stubborn yet bashful expression, truly touching the depths of his heart.
He decided that it was time to call it a day and go back to accompany his wife!
When he finally set down his phone and lifted his head, he found eyes all focused on him, staring as if he were some kind of alien.
His brow furrowed involuntarily, and in a displeased tone, he questioned, "What's the matter? Is there nothing else to do around here?"
"No." Came the unanimous head-shaking response from everyone.

"I'm leaving." He stood up, clearly no longer patient to stay.

"Mr. Whitman, about the collaboration..." One person gathered the courage to inquire.

"Let us proceed according to the previously agreed-upon plan. I loathe haggling. If you agree, we will continue; if not, then so be it." The Seraphian Group was not lacking in such projects. Collaboration, for him,was also a matter of mutual affinity.

With these words left hanging in the air, he briskly departed, oblivious to the fact that his brief expression just moments before was enough fodder for gossip among those present for quite some time.

"Did you see that? Mr. Whitman actually smiled, a real smile!"

"Of course! He isn't poker-faced. He would naturally smile!"

"No, what I mean is, he really smiled, genuinely!"

"If it's not genuine, then what is it? Be careful. If Mr. Whitman hears you, you're done for."

"I mean, when Mr. Whitman smiled before, it was always eerie, and it felt like something bad was about to happen. However, just now, he really smiled, just like an ordinary person, so sweet. Didn't you see it? Didn't you see it?"

He glanced around seeking resonance, an unspoken understanding.

Everyone else fell silent, their thoughts mirroring his. Mr. Whitman, surprisingly, let out a smile, a smile that carried with it a hint of eerie peculiarity.

Evelyn waited for a long time but has yet to receive a reply from Samuel. Looking at the few lines of text on her phone, she felt her face flush with embarrassment.

This man was leading her astray, making her lose all sense of seriousness in her speech.

"Why are you sighing and shaking your head here? What are you up to?"

She was too focused and didn't notice that Cathy had already finished her work. Cathy closed her laptop and walked over to look at her.

"Nothing, just playing with my phone out of boredom," Evelyn quickly responded, "Are you done with your work?"

"Yes." Nodding, Cathy sat down next to her and said seriously, "I've submitted the purchase order for today's visit to the garden base, including yours. Guess what?"

Evelyn was puzzled.

"The higher-ups have approved it. It went smoothly beyond imagination. Let me tell you, I've been with the company for so long, and I've never seen approvals go through so quickly. This trip has been incredibly smooth!" she exclaimed, clapping her hands.

"Okay." Evelyn naturally knew it was approved. The top person had already been informed, so the approval was given.

Perhaps her reaction was too subdued, Cathy scrutinized her with a slight tilt of her head, carefully observing for a moment. "Come clean with me. Is your boyfriend one of the managers at Seraphian Group?"
Evelyn answered, "No."
Where on earth did they get the idea that he was a mere manager? He was Scott, the Chief Executive Officer, the mastermind behind the entire Seraphian Group. Manager? Ridiculous.
"Truly not?" Cathy narrowed her eyes, filled with suspicion. "We are treated exceptionally well on this trip, and everything is going so smoothly. Isn't it because of him? Be honest with me. I can keep it confidential. Do you still not trust me?"

Evelyn was in a dilemma. "He really isn't a manager, Cathy. It's not the right time now. When the time is right, I will introduce him to you, okay?"
If she continued to let Cathy speculate like this, she might figure it out. Thinking this, she felt chills down her spine.
It was not that she didn't trust Cathy, but the more people who knew, the greater the risk of the secret being exposed. And right now, she wasn't ready for that.

Samuel's status was indeed extraordinary, standing at a pinnacle so high that she could already envision the tumultuous waves that would ensue once revealed. Moreover, if the Jones family were to find out...
Hence, she could only offer her apologies in advance to Cathy.
After observing her for a moment, Cathy wasn't necessarily one to pry excessively, but given the recent events, she found the situation quite mysterious and intriguing.
Evelyn hesitated to connect the dots or divulge any information. Seeing Evelyn's internal struggle, Cathy wouldn't press her further, saying, "Alright, if you choose not to disclose it, then so be it. However, let's make it clear that you promised to introduce him to me. Promises must be kept; words must hold weight!"
"I know, I will definitely do it!" Escaping this topic was undoubtedly the best outcome.

"Are you hungry? Let's go out for some food." After finishing work, Cathy felt her stomach growling.

Evelyn thought for a moment, and said, "The restaurant in this hotel is supposed to be good. Why don't we eat there? It saves us from going outside."

Cathy agreed. "Sure, let's go downstairs then."
