Chapter 23 Do You Want Me Dead?
Liam couldn't believe his ears. "What did you say?"
"I have thought about giving you a chance, but even now, you still want me to bear all the responsibility. Liam, do I really look foolish?" Evelyn's voice was icy, filled with sarcasm.
Liam was suddenly gripped by fear. The Evelyn standing before him seemed unfamiliar, a stark departure from the person he had known for years. She appeared sharp, inscrutable, and beyond his control.
"Evelyn, what do you mean by this? Don't you trust me anymore?"
"I trusted you too much. I almost didn't even realize I was being sold." Evelyn paused, not wanting to say too much to him. "From now on, your Liavian Perfumes has nothing to do with me."
She emphasized the word "your" and planned to leave, bypassing him.
Liam quickly grabbed her arm. Even though he hadn't figured it out yet, he knew he couldn't let her leave like this.
"You're still blaming me for not signing a formal contract with you?" he cautiously asked. "Evelyn, don't be so childish. Does it really matter if you sign a contract with me or not? If that's what you care about, you could have told me earlier. Why did you create so many problems?"
"Evelyn, Liavian Perfumes is mine. But isn't it yours, isn't it ours? By doing this, you're pushing me into a corner, don't you know?!" Her grip on her arm tightened, causing her pain.
Evelyn frowned and said, "Let go of me!"
"I won't let go until you clarify things today," Liam replied.
Liam paused, realizing his tone had been too harsh. He made an effort to calm himself, lowering his head and taking a moment to gather his thoughts. Something seemed to click in his mind as he raised an eyebrow and addressed Evelyn directly. "Evelyn, are you feeling jealous?"
In fact, Liam was not afraid of Evelyn finding out about his relationship with Vivian. He thought, 'She loves me deeply and never believed those rumors. Every time I say a few sweet words, she believes me. How could she possibly doubt me?'
But her recent behavior, especially when facing Vivian, was too strange. This forced Liam to think more and directly bring up the matter.
"Are you jealous of Vivian?" Liam continued to ask, observing Evelyn's changing expression.
Evelyn glanced at him but remained silent, further confirming Liam's judgment.
"Evelyn, is this true?" Liam sighed heavily, loosening his grip on her arm. Shaking his head, he said, "After all these years, I thought our love was unbreakable and could withstand any test. But you...
"I don't know what you heard or saw. But there must be a misunderstanding. You, me, and Vivian have known each other for a long time. If something were to happen between her and me, it would have happened already.
"Don't listen to the rumors from outside. Those people are trying to sabotage our relationship. Evelyn, don't let yourself be manipulated!"
After uttering those words, he released her and gently reached out to touch her shoulder and embrace her.
Evelyn took two steps back, avoiding his touch, and asked indifferently, "Is that so?"
Liam couldn't fathom what she was thinking, so he pressed on with his earlier sentiments. "Remember our agreement? If we win this competition, we're getting a marriage license. If you doubt me, let's do it now! Let's tie the knot!"
At this moment, he couldn't afford to dwell on anything else. With urgency pressing, his priority was to console Evelyn before addressing other concerns.
Evelyn found it somewhat amusing. The phrase she had been waiting for so long now sounded ironic to her. Evelyn thought, 'Applying for a marriage license? Getting married? He must be dreaming!'
Supperessing her mocking smile, she sighed with relief and said, "There's no need for that. If you want to prove it, there's no need to go through all that trouble."
Seeing her expression, Liam thought she had been convinced and quickly stepped forward, saying, "Yes, there should be trust between us. You've always helped me through tough times. You will this time too, right?"
"Sure." Evelyn nodded and said, "Actually, I have a way to prove both your innocence with Vivian and to save the current situation the company is facing."
"What's your plan?" Liam asked excitedly.
He believed it would be best if things worked out.
Despite his diligent efforts to resolve the issue and engage in extensive PR work over the past two days, public opinion remained strong, significantly impacting Liavian Perfumes. This was evident in the recent perfume sales. Reputation is particularly vital for a burgeoning company such as theirs.
Evelyn could clearly see his anxiety.
At least he was correct about one thing: Whenever he encountered difficulties, she was the one who helped him overcome them. She had dedicated all her efforts to crafting new products and ideas, believing she was advocating for their future. However, she had failed to realize she was actually working for someone else.
"This plan is simple." Evelyn smiled and calmly said, "Let's go back now and make a final clarification at the press conference. You'll tell the media and journalists that all the past perfume creations of Liavian Perfumes were made by me, and all the awards Liavian Perfumes has received were rightfully mine. Will you do it?"
Liam stared at her with wide eyes. Even though she was still two steps away from him, he felt like she was almost in his face, making it hard for him to breathe.
He clenched his teeth and said indignantly, "You want me to die!"
Evelyn burst into laughter. "Why would I want that? Aren't I just stating the facts? Every bestselling perfume from Liavian Perfumes these years was expertly crafted by me. You just need to reveal one truth to the public. Is that so difficult for you?"
"Evelyn, you never cared about these things before. Why have you become so materialistic now? Is your reputation more important to you than me?"
Clearly, Liam was unwilling to do it. Not only was he unwilling, but he also directly accused Evelyn as if she were the villain.
Evelyn thought, 'Materialistic? Reputation? Is he still trying to use these glamorous words to manipulate me, a foolish woman who has silently supported him from behind? Does he want to suppress me with these words?'
