Chapter 45 Mr. Scott, I'm Not Worthy
After some thought, Liam said, "Alright."
Using a borrowed phone, Liam managed to reach Evelyn, but she had blocked both his and the borrowed phone numbers.
When Evelyn answered the call, she had just stepped out of the lab. All research and data analysis were completed, detailed records were ready to hand over to Cathy, and she had finished her work ahead of schedule.
This task posed no challenge for Evelyn, thanks to her natural talent. Having practically lived in the lab for the past few years, she had become well-versed in these tasks.
Due to the nature of the work, there was a bathroom in the research facility. Evelyn took a quick shower and was just drying her hair when her phone rang.
"Hello," Evelyn answered, turning on the speakerphone while drying her hair.
"Evelyn, it's me," Liam spoke in a low voice.
"Who is this?" Evelyn, with a large towel wrapped around her head, didn't recognize Liam's voice. She sniffed her hair to ensure it had no odor. She didn't want Samuel to smell anything odd on her.
Liam remained silent.
He thought, 'She's deliberately asking like this. She must be! Is she pretending not to know me?'
Gripping the phone tightly, Liam tried to stay calm and not get provoked. "Evelyn, it's Liam. I'd like to talk to you. Can we meet?"
Upon hearing "Liam," Evelyn glanced at her phone, seeing an unfamiliar number. She realized Liam was calling her from someone else's phone.
"No," Evelyn declined decisively, about to hang up.
"Wait!" Sensing something, Liam said urgently, "I want to have a proper conversation with you. Do you have to make me fail? After all, we used to be friends. There's a misunderstanding between us. Can you give me a chance to explain?"
"Friends?" Evelyn chuckled softly. "Mr. Scott, I'm not worthy of being your friend."
Before Evelyn could hang up, she heard Vivian's sharp voice. "Evelyn, are you too scared to meet us? If you're dissatisfied or angry, you can say so. How can you set us up like this?"
"When it comes to setting others up, some people are very skilled. I'm not interested in such things." Evelyn picked up the phone, saying, "I'm not afraid to meet you. Mr. Scott, Ms. Reed, you may have forgotten that your company is suing me. You are the plaintiffs now, and I am the defendant. It wouldn't be appropriate for us to meet privately."
Evelyn smirked sarcastically. "If you keep harassing me with calls, I will record them as evidence for court."
With that, she decisively hung up.
She tossed the phone back into the cabinet. As she looked up, she saw Cathy standing at the door, causing her to pause.
Cathy had been caught eavesdropping. She raised her hands and said, "I didn't mean to listen in. I heard you were in the changing room, so I came to find you. I didn't hear much."
Evelyn didn't mind how much Cathy had heard and took out a comb to fix her hair. "It's okay. It's not important."
Cathy smiled. "It seems you're quite confident. I can rest assured then. At least your personal affairs won't affect the company."
Evelyn looked up at her. "Ms. White, are you suddenly confident in me?"
"Previously, I didn't have confidence in you, but after seeing your recent work performance..." Cathy paused and changed the subject. "By the way, I've already reviewed your research analysis report. It's well done."
"Thank you," Evelyn politely replied, without feigning humility. Her work was well done, and she had confidence in herself.
Evelyn exuded confidence. As Cathy, typically full of pride, observed her, a faint smile finally graced her lips. Leaning against the cabinet, Cathy fixed her gaze on Evelyn and admitted, "Honestly, I used to think you were the one plagiarizing."
Evelyn raised an eyebrow but remained silent.
In truth, even without Cathy's disclosure, she knew Cathy had once distrusted and even despised her.
Cathy's eyes seemed to say to Evelyn, "You're a thief. You're copying other people's work."
Evelyn didn't explain because explanations were futile. She knew only her skills and time could prove her innocence.
Evelyn stayed silent, and Cathy continued, "Vivian is quite well-known in this circle. Over the past two years, she has won many awards. Moreover, Liavian Perfumes' rapid rise in the industry is closely tied to the success of the products she developed. You, on the other hand, are a newcomer without much recognition..."
Cathy chuckled. This time, her laughter held no mockery or disdain, only lightness.
"Do you easily believe me now? What would you do if I really had plagiarized?" Evelyn looked at Cathy and asked.
Cathy burst into laughter. "I can only say you chose the wrong path. You have talent and skills; as long as you work hard, you will succeed. There's no need to plagiarize. And I believe you didn't."
Cathy's confident and trusting gaze warmed Evelyn.
"Thank you," Evelyn said sincerely.
Cathy didn't have a deep relationship with Evelyn, and despite her initial hostility towards her, she now placed full trust in her—a trust that deeply moved Evelyn.
Cathy patted Evelyn's shoulder, stood up straight, and said, "I heard your chances of winning the lawsuit aren't high, but you sounded quite firm on the phone just now. Don't be afraid. Truth is truth, and falsehood can never be true."
Evelyn nodded, took out her phone and bag, and closed the cabinet door.
"Don't delay this matter for too long. Prolonged delays could lead to trouble. The public's opinion of you isn't favorable, so you need to win this lawsuit quickly. Also, after you're done with these matters, hurry to the project department for work."
Evelyn smiled. "Alright."
"Let's go. This project is over, so I can relax now." Cathy placed a hand on Evelyn's shoulder and walked out with her. "Did you take a taxi here? That's inconvenient! Let me give you a ride. Where are you headed?"
Evelyn shook her head and said, "It's not necessary."
"Don't be polite. Are you still mad at me for making things difficult for you?"
"No. You're a supervisor; you should be strict with your subordinates."
"Is a taxi more comfortable than my car?"
At Cathy's jest, Evelyn laughed. "No, someone is coming to pick me up. Thank you for your offer."
"Your boyfriend?" Cathy smiled meaningfully.
