Chapter 36 I Was a Bit Surprised

After washing her hands, Evelyn returned to the living room, sat on the couch, and took a sip of water. She glanced at the tablet computer that was placed aside, thought for a moment, and picked it up. She lightly swiped her fingers on it.

Opening Instagram, Evelyn lowered her head and pressed her fingertips against her lips. She attentively looked at the gossip news.

Due to Samuel, Evelyn didn't give much heed to the news. It concerned the three of them from their college days. Yet, she sensed the entire story was fabricated.

However, what intrigued her was that these gossip tidbits weren't disclosed by the involved parties, Liam or Vivian, but rather from the viewpoint of bystanders, including their college classmates or so-called "friends."

At first, Evelyn was a little angry, but after reading the news, she no longer felt angry and found it rather amusing.

Evelyn thought those names sounded familiar, but she couldn't even remember what some of those people looked like.

Evelyn wasn't antisocial, but she didn't actively seek out social interactions on campus. Instead, she had devoted most of her time to conducting experiments and collecting data.Yet now, these people who came forward as "witnesses" seemed to know her so well. They vividly depicted Vivian and Liam's compatibility and love during college, casting Evelyn as a home wrecker who had meddled in their relationship.

In their descriptions, Evelyn was the one who had ruined Vivian and Liam's relationship. Because of Vivian and Liam's kindness, they didn't want to hurt her and still remained friends with her. They forgave her and kept her by their side during her most difficult times. But no one considered that Evelyn wasn't grateful to Vivian and Liam. Instead, she stole their company's data and the result of Vivian's hard work.

It was like a real-life version of the farmer and the snake story!

Evelyn was engrossed in the news, initially feeling somewhat annoyed but gradually growing calm. In the end, she almost saw herself as an outsider observing others weave stories.

The news portrayed her differently from reality; the things mentioned were not actions she had taken.

"Come and eat."

The smell of food wafted over. Samuel placed the soup on the dining table and called Evelyn to come and eat. Then, he turned back to the kitchen to bring the dishes.

Evelyn wanted to help, but Samuel stopped her with his gaze. "Go sit at the table. Don't touch anything."

Evelyn could only sit obediently and watch as he arranged everything. Samuel even considerately placed the utensils in front of her.

As she watched his busy figure, Evelyn thought, 'If journalists or the Seraphian employees were to see this scene, they would surely be surprised.'

Who would have thought that the stern Samuel from outside could be so naturally caring towards a woman? At this moment, he seemed more approachable.

"Let's eat. Why are you staring at me?" Samuel glanced at Evelyn and handed her a fork. After some thought, Samuel placed the soup in front of her before sitting down.

Supporting her cheek with one hand, Evelyn looked at him and said, "I feel a bit flattered."

"Really?" Samuel glanced at her and said, "I think you need to exercise your heart. You'll be receiving these surprises more often in the future."

Evelyn felt sweet because of Samuel's superior flirting skills.

The food in front of Evelyn looked extremely delicious. In addition to the mushroom soup and steak she had already cooked, Samuel also prepared grilled chicken and salad.

Samuel placed the steak onto her plate. "You're too skinny, so you need to eat more meat."

"I didn't expect you to be able to cook." The food Samuel made tasted really good. Evelyn thought that although Samuel couldn't match a professional chef, he was better at cooking than most people.

Putting down her fork, Samuel looked at Evelyn. "Do you think I should sit at the dining table like a child who needs the servants to do everything for him, even feeding me and wiping away breadcrumbs?"

Evelyn burst out laughing.

Thinking about that scene, Evelyn felt happy.

Although Samuel's description seemed a bit absurd, Evelyn actually felt quite similarly.

"At the very least, you shouldn't have to cook yourself." Evelyn suddenly became curious about Samuel's life because he seemed different from what she had imagined.

"If I wanted to, of course I wouldn't need to cook." Samuel didn't deny that with his family background and status, he didn't need to personally handle these mundane tasks.

"Don't you want to?" Evelyn became even more curious and doubted whether Samuel enjoyed cooking.

Evelyn thought, 'Otherwise, why would Samuel insist on kicking me out of the kitchen and cooking himself?'

Calmly looking at her, Samuel shook his head. "I studied abroad for a while."

"So?" Evelyn didn't understand what he meant because he didn't finish his sentence.

Despite having studied abroad, Samuel, thanks to the Whitman family's wealth, certainly had the means to purchase a house and hire help to take care of him.Considering Samuel's aversion to having service staff around, Evelyn speculated that this was why he preferred to cook for himself.

After taking a sip of soup, Samuel continued to answer her question. "As the inheritor of the Seraphian Group and the Whitman family, I have not only studied business management. I have also received training in other areas. During that time, I learned how to cook. It was a way to relieve stress."

Samuel didn't continue discussing this topic. What he didn't tell Evelyn was that during that time, he couldn't be by her side and what he had gone through.

"So... you didn't let me continue cooking because you don't believe in my cooking skills?"

After taking a sip of the soup she made, Evelyn felt that the taste was good. Therefore, even though Samuel's culinary skills were exquisite, she didn't need to doubt her own cooking skills.

"Cooking is too tiring." Samuel added after a pause, "You shouldn't cook anymore in the future."

Evelyn was very surprised that this was the reason!

Evelyn thought, 'Cooking is too tiring? Compared to the rental house I used to live in, there are enough utensils here, and I only need to do the simplest preparations. Yet, Samuel is still worried that I will get tired.'

Evelyn remembered that Liam used to say, "A woman should be good at cooking like my dear Evelyn and have a career."

At that time, Evelyn was proud because she felt that Liam relied on her. But Evelyn never considered that Liam never cut vegetables or washed dishes. Liam always waited for Evelyn to cook the meals.

Now, Samuel was kicking Evelyn out of the kitchen and not allowing her to cook just because "cooking is too tiring"!

Evelyn finally understood a fact: "If a man loves you, he doesn't need you to be good at cooking or have a job. He will only hold you in the palm of his hand and take care of you."
