Chapter 111 I Don't Love You Anymore
Camilla jolted awake to the sound of someone knocking. She shot up, sure someone was at her door.
"Who is it?" she called out, a bit on edge.
Sebastian was pulling an all-nighter at the lab. If it was a burglar, she was on her own.
The knocking stopped for a sec, but whoever it was didn't say a word.
When Camilla didn't open the door, the knocking started up again. "If you don't speak, I'm not opening the door."
"Camilla." Leopold chuckled bitterly, thinking, 'Still as stubborn as ever.'
"What do you want?" Camilla frowned, recognizing Leopold's voice.
"Let me in, let's talk. I swear I won't do anything. If you're not comfy, just leave the door ajar..."
"There's nothing to talk about," Camilla cut him off, not budging.
No matter how much Leopold knocked or begged, Camilla acted like she didn't hear a thing.
Leopold seemed extra patient tonight. She didn't open the door, so he kept knocking.
Camilla came out of the shower and still heard the knocking. Pissed, she grabbed her phone. "Hello? Someone won't stop knocking on my door..."
In the end, Leopold was half-persuaded, half-dragged away by the cops.
Finally, some peace and quiet. Camilla lay back down to sleep.
The next morning, she got up, made breakfast, packed her stuff, and headed to the lab.
She planned to crash at the lab for the next couple of days to dodge Leopold and catch up on work. She had to finish her paper before grad school started in September.
But as soon as she stepped out of her building, Leopold jumped out from a nearby alley and blocked her path.
Camilla was stunned.
"Is this fun for you?" Leopold's face was dark, his eyes cold.
After a sleepless night and a trip to the police station, his once handsome face was now shadowed with stubble, and he looked beat.
His eyes were a mix of love and resentment, anger and pity as he stared at Camilla.
"Did you enjoy having me lectured all night? Are you satisfied now?" His words sounded like a question, but his tone was so soft that it almost felt like he was whining.
Camilla looked at him, her calm eyes showing no emotion. "First off, I wasn't playing around. You really disturbed me. Secondly, you got lectured because you were disturbing the peace in the middle of the night. You deserved it."
"Why didn't you open the door?"
Camilla replied, "I never open the door for strangers."
This hit a nerve with Leopold. "What do you mean by strangers? Do you not know me, or do I not know you? What about the past six years?"
"You said it yourself, that's the past. Since it's already the past, don't let it mess with the present!"
"Do you hate me that much?"
Camilla thought, 'Hate enough to deny everything from before.'
"No," Camilla shook her head, looking into his eyes, enunciating each word, "Hate is based on love. Only love can turn into hate, but I don't love you anymore."
During the initial period after their breakup, no matter how calm Camilla appeared on the surface, she was filled with hatred inside.
She hated Leopold for his easy betrayal, resented him for his heartless decision to end things and mourned the six years of their relationship that were gone and irretrievable.
But as Camilla endured the toughest times and slowly healed her emotional wounds, looking back now, she felt nothing but relief.
Camilla said, "I've moved on. You should accept reality and live your life well."
"How can you just move on?" Leopold suddenly got all worked up.
Camilla found his outburst kinda funny. 'He let go first, and now that I'm moving on, he wants to drag me back? What a joke,' she thought.
She said, "Leopold, don't come bothering me again. Don't make me hate you."
Her firm words made him lose all his confidence. "Camilla, don't be like this, okay?"
She just stared at him, calm as ever.
Leopold continued, "I've fixed everything between us. My mom's on board. We can get married right now if you just say yes!"
Camilla replied, "I say no."
She knew his so-called "fixing" was just him fooling himself.
"Camilla."
"I'm really busy. I gotta go."
With that, she walked past him and left.
Leopold stood there, stunned, not moving for ages.
The rush hour crowd flowed around him, but he looked like he'd lost his soul, his eyes blankly watching everything, like the whole world didn't matter anymore.
After a long while, his stiff eyes moved, looking in the direction Camilla had gone, and he murmured softly, "Is there really no chance?"
Amara had no clue what Leopold and Elodie talked about in the study that night. At first, she felt uneasy living there because of Leopold's cold attitude, like she could be kicked out any second. But soon, that unease vanished.
First, Elodie reassured her, saying she was a benefactor to the Wipere family and told the maids to take good care of her.
Elodie even splurged on a bunch of supplements for Amara.
On top of that, Leopold seemed to have silently agreed to let her stay in the villa and didn't show the same rejection and disgust as before.
The servants in the villa picked up on the change and started treating Amara like royalty. Whatever she wanted to eat, someone would whip it up right away.
Elodie would occasionally gift her luxury jewelry, accessories, and bags she never dared to dream of.
Amara was living the high life and had long forgotten she was still a student. Every day she woke up in the lavish villa and ate gourmet food.
No wonder every woman dreamed of marrying into a wealthy family. Amara only regretted not thinking of this and getting pregnant sooner, wasting such good days.
Elodie was easy to deal with for now. For the sake of the child, she was more than accommodating. The main issue was Leopold's attitude.
After going out that night, Leopold didn't come back all night. She didn't know what kind of shock he experienced, but he caught a cold the next day.
He wouldn't listen when told to see a doctor and refused to cooperate when a doctor was brought to the house.
Like a sulking child, he locked himself in the master bedroom for a whole day and night, not eating or drinking, and nobody knew what he was doing.
Amara wanted to go up and comfort him, to show her gentleness and thoughtfulness. But before she could get close, Leopold's icy glare froze her in place.
For a moment, she even felt that Leopold looked at her as if she were disgusting.
But soon, Leopold's expression returned to normal. It made her think it might have just been her imagination.
"Baby, are you going out?" Amara quickly got up from the sofa and went to Leopold's side.
Leopold said, "Don't call me baby. If I hear it one more time, you're out of here!"
