Chapter 58 I'm Only Doing This for You
She glanced around; the room was pitch black and dead silent.
She thought, "Thank God it was just a dream."
But she couldn't stop her heavy breathing, like she'd just been yanked out of the ocean, gasping for air.
The night breeze blew, and the wind chimes at the door jingled. Camilla peeked outside; the waves were loud in the quiet night.
The fear from the nightmare wouldn't go away. Unable to sleep, she threw on a coat and decided to take a walk.
In the deep night, the gentle sea breeze turned chilly.
Camilla pulled her shawl tighter and strolled along the beach.
No stars tonight; the dark sky was lit only by a few scattered lights along the shore.
Thinking back to the crazy stuff that happened during the day, Camilla felt something was off.
Her gut told her she missed some details.
Each event seemed random, but all happening at once was kinda fishy.
Even though Eli swore he was late 'cause he was in the restroom, his overly righteous act seemed too perfect.
Camilla looked up and suddenly froze.
On the shore, Marcus was on the phone, his back to her.
"Oscar, how do I handle a situation like my friend's? Private settlement? No way. Even though international lawsuits are a pain, I don't mind the hassle. Let's go through the process."
Marcus knew why the hotel's staff was so cocky.
An international seven-star hotel, hogging the best island in Reefhaven Isles, even hosting royals for vacations, had the clout to be so arrogant.
He thought, "Too bad they messed with the wrong person."
Ending the call, he turned around and locked eyes with Camilla.
Marcus was stunned for a sec, then smiled. "Still up?"
"Yeah, couldn't sleep, so I came out for a walk."
The damp sea breeze hit her face, bringing a chill.
Camilla asked, "Was that call about my situation?"
Marcus paused and nodded. "Since it happened abroad, the accountability process is different. I haven't dealt with this before, so I checked with a lawyer to be safe."
Camilla pursed her lips and pointed to a nearby beach hut, a 24-hour convenience store. "Want something to drink? My treat."
Marcus thought she'd avoid him like she did earlier, but this was unexpected.
So, surprise flashed in his eyes, but only for a moment. He then smiled and nodded. "Sure."
How could he turn down Camilla's invite?
Marcus grabbed a cold beer, while Camilla picked a cup of coconut water. They sat on the beach chairs nearby.
"Thanks," Camilla said.
Marcus rubbed the bottle. "I made a decision for you without asking. Glad you're not mad."
He'd already decided to have the group's legal team file an international lawsuit. Camilla, as the involved party, had the right to know.
"Do you think I'm that ungrateful?" Camilla chuckled. "Besides, what happened today probably wasn't the first time."
Marcus raised an eyebrow, waiting for her to continue.
"Their attitude was weird. They weren't shocked at all. Their first thought wasn't to calm the tourists but to make excuses for themselves, and they did it so smoothly."
Marcus listened quietly and then handed her a business card. "Someone might hit you up later. If you got any questions, just call this number."
Camilla glanced at it. Oscar Hall, Senior Partner at Stellar Counsel LLP, the top lawyer for the Davis family.
Camilla pursed her lips, tucked her messy hair behind her ear, and thanked him again.
The Davis family had the best legal team in the country. With them on board, it saved her a ton of hassle.
For Camilla, this wasn't just about the money anymore.
Marcus turned to look at her, his eyes serious despite the smile. "I'm not a good guy, not even a decent one. I'm doing this 'cause the victim is you."
In the night breeze, Camilla avoided his gaze and looked at the sea. "What did you just say? I didn't catch that."
Marcus laughed. "Oh, if you didn't hear it, that's cool. I can say it again. Wanna hear it?"
Camilla was helpless.
Under the same night sky, in a water villa at the hotel.
Amara was seriously applying a face mask in front of the mirror.
The face masks and serums she couldn't afford before, she could now have as many as she wanted.
After all, she had Leopold's supplementary card. She could swipe it as she pleased, and he never questioned it.
Using these high-end products had improved her skin.
Leopold sat on the sofa, her phone vibrating non-stop, annoying him. "Amara, your phone's ringing."
"Oh, just hang up for me. It's probably the teacher calling again. So annoying!"
"The teacher?"
"Yeah, I submitted a leave request before I left, but they keep calling to check. Is it necessary?" Amara rolled her eyes.
Leopold asked, "So, did the teacher approve your leave request?"
"They probably did, right? Even if they didn't, it doesn't matter. I'm already abroad. It's fine; everyone does this."
Leopold was speechless.
"I'm going out for a walk. You continue."
"Don't go. I'll be done in a bit. Wait for me."
But all she got in response was Leopold's departing figure.
Leopold thought of Camilla again.
In college, when they finally managed to schedule a date, Camilla's phone kept ringing, always from Aurora.
Once or twice was fine, but the calls kept coming. One time it was a data issue, the next it was a citation problem. Eventually, Leopold got angry, but even while comforting him, Camilla would still take the calls, always polite and respectful.
"Aren't you annoyed?" Leopold asked, frustrated.
Camilla was surprised. "Why would I be? It's my fault. Professor Garcia is kindly reminding me. How could I be annoyed?"
Yeah, Camilla's emotions were always stable. Even when they argued, she was the first to communicate and actively solve the problem, never throwing tantrums.
Sometimes, Leopold felt that Camilla was so calm that she didn't seem like a normal person. Or rather, her rational demeanor made him feel she didn't care about him at all.
He thought, 'Isn't there a saying?
'When a woman has no emotional fluctuations towards you, don't doubt it; she doesn't love you.'
But Amara was different. Her emotions were easily influenced by him.
Amara would be anxious and insecure because of a look, a gesture, or a word from him.
She would take his emotions as a benchmark, unconditionally accommodating and complying with any of his requests.
So, after six years of dating Camilla, when he met Amara and saw her admiring and adoring eyes, Leopold instantly felt heady for her admiration.
