Chapter 62 You Protect Camilla, I Protect You
A snake shot outta the box!
This thing had these crazy white and black rings all over its body, and a skinny tail—definitely a venomous one!
Camilla freaked out and chucked the box away.
But the snake was already airborne, fangs out, aiming right at her.
The host nearby went ghost-white, screaming into the mic.
Everything went nuts in a split second.
Everyone started backing off, trying to get as far away as possible.
But Camilla was stuck, watching in horror as the snake lunged at her wrist.
Just then, two figures jumped in. Leopold, being closer and quicker, yanked Camilla outta the way just in time.
But now his neck was right in the snake's path.
"Watch out!"
"Be careful!"
Camilla and Amara yelled at the same time.
Leopold wrapped Camilla in his arms, while Amara rushed in, using her body as a shield.
The snake bit Amara's calf instead.
"Ah!" Amara screamed, then crumpled to the ground.
Leopold's eyes went wide. He shoved Camilla aside and checked Amara's leg.
It was a venomous snake!
"Baby," Amara whimpered, "it hurts so bad."
Leopold clenched his jaw, holding her tight. "Why'd you do something so stupid?"
Amara, sweating bullets from the pain, still managed a weak smile, "At least you're okay."
Leopold's voice was rough, holding her hand tight. "Don't worry, the doc's on the way. I won't let anything happen to you."
Amara's eyes started to glaze over, her voice fading, "I know, I always believed in you. So, don't worry too much about me. For you, I'll..."
Before she could finish, she passed out.
Leopold, looking at Amara unconscious in his arms, freaked out, shouting, "Doctor, where's the doctor? Call an ambulance! Help!"
Finally, the doctor and nurses showed up, setting down a stretcher and loading Amara onto a helicopter.
She needed to get to the hospital for antivenom, pronto.
Without a second thought, Leopold followed.
Juniper, seeing this, rolled her eyes. "Do they really think they're in a movie? Only that idiot Leopold would fall for it."
She glanced at Camilla.
Camilla stood there, stunned, watching the helicopter take off, her eyelashes fluttering before she looked down to hide her disappointment and heartbreak.
She said she didn't care, but she did love once, so it was hard not to mind.
Camilla had seen all of Leopold's worry, panic, compassion, and concern.
"Camilla?" Juniper put an arm around her shoulder, looking worried. "You okay? Did it scare you?"
Camilla snapped out of it, shaking her head lightly. "I'm fine."
Juniper seemed to sense something, looking a bit worried.
Camilla tried to smile, but her face stayed stiff.
After a bit, she said, "Juniper, let's head back."
"Okay."
"Don't worry, I'm really fine." She quickly pulled herself together, "I was just thinking, he's really doing well now," she paused, murmuring, "better than before."
She hoped that this time, Leopold had found his true love and would cherish it.
Marcus, watching the whole scene, smirked.
From this moment on, Leopold was out of the game.
Amara, being tough and getting the antivenom in time, bounced back pretty quick.
Once the hospital gave the all-clear, they headed back to the island.
Just to be safe, Leopold had a doc tag along to keep an eye on Amara.
In the room, Amara lay weak on the bed while the doc checked her out.
Leopold stuck by her side, itching for a smoke, but Amara said, "Baby, I'm scared. Don't leave me alone, okay? What if another snake comes to bite me?"
Remembering how Amara took the hit for him, Leopold's heart melted. "Alright, I won't leave. Just cooperate with the doc, okay?"
"Okay." Amara nodded, tears in her eyes.
After the doc finished up and took out the IV, he left the room.
With just the two of them, Amara tried to sit up.
Leopold helped her, and she leaned into his chest. "Baby, my calf hurts so bad. Do you think it'll scar?"
"It won't. The doc promised."
"But it really hurts."
"The meds were just applied. Hang in there."
As they talked, Leopold's mind drifted.
He remembered when Camilla sprained her ankle during a university physical test but insisted on finishing the run.
By the end, her ankle was swollen like a balloon.
Leopold took her to the hospital, where the doc scolded her for being reckless, saying she almost messed up her bone. But she didn't make a sound, just had slightly red eyes.
Leopold called her foolish, saying she shouldn't have run and should've stopped immediately.
Camilla replied, "If I don't pass, I won't graduate. Anyway, if I push through, it'll be over! Besides, I'm already in so much pain, why are you scolding me?"
"Baby? What are you thinking about?" Amara, noticing his silence, shook his arm.
"Huh? What did you say?" Leopold snapped back, looking down at her.
"I heard even the best meds can't completely prevent scarring. Will my leg look ugly?"
The thought of having snake bite marks on her leg drove Amara nuts.
Maybe because Amara saved him, Leopold was extra patient this time, "Of course not. Trust modern medicine. Even if it does scar, there's always plastic surgery..."
Before he could finish, Amara hugged his waist, speaking into his chest, "If I really do have a scar, will you still love me?"
Leopold was caught off guard, not sure what to say. Amara kept going, "Even if you don't, I won't leave you. I love you, and I'll stay by your side forever."
A mix of emotions flashed in Leopold's eyes. He raised his hand, gently stroking Amara's hair, unsure of what to say.
After a bit, Leopold finally spoke, "Thank you. If it weren't for you, I would've been bitten. Whatever you want, just ask, and I'll do my best to make it happen."
"You don't need to thank me." Amara looked up at him, her eyes sincere, like he was her whole world, "I did it willingly. I know you still have feelings for Camilla, but it's okay. I don't mind. I believe that one day, you'll only love me. You protect Camilla, and I'll protect you."
