Chapter 45 What the Hell?
"And you!" He spun around to Camilla, "You're a real piece of work, you know that? Of all people, you had to go after him. Happy now?"
Camilla felt a mix of anger and injustice. She got dragged into this mess for no reason. She didn't do anything wrong.
Marcus, on the other hand, stayed cool as a cucumber under Leopold's glare.
He touched his busted nose, a cold smirk playing on his lips. "Didn't you see what we were up to?"
Leopold's face was stone-cold. "So, no explanation?"
"Explain what? That I like Camilla? That I wanna be with her?"
Camilla's face went pale at his words.
Leopold's eyes flared with rage, and he swung his fist, landing another punch on Marcus's face. "You like her? You wanna be with her? Over my dead body!"
Marcus took the hit hard, his head snapping to the side, but he quickly shielded Camilla behind him. "Why can't I?"
This protective move only fueled Leopold's anger. He gritted his teeth, "Because I said so!"
Marcus shot back, "And who are you to decide? An ex who's ancient history?"
"I'll say it's over when I say so. Who do you think you are?"
"You already said it, man. You broke up with her. We all saw it. Did you forget that fast?"
"Fine," Leopold sneered, nodding, "waiting for me to slip up, huh?"
A flicker of guilt crossed Marcus's face. "Sorry, but you were the one who let go first."
"That doesn't mean you get a free pass! Marcus, are you that desperate?"
"Leopold, chill out. People break up and move on all the time. You dumped her. Does that mean Camilla can never be with anyone else? If not me, then someone else."
Images of Camilla with other guys, starting a family, flashed through Leopold's mind, making his head feel like it was gonna explode. His fists trembled, and his mind went blank.
By the time he snapped out of it, he was already swinging at Marcus again and again.
Marcus dodged and blocked as best as he could, but since he was protecting Camilla, he took a few hits.
Leopold didn't come out unscathed either. Marcus knew him too well, and soon enough, Leopold's mouth was bleeding, and his forehead was cut.
Amara had taken a couple of minutes in the lounge to calm down before heading to the hall to find Leopold.
She had made up her mind. Camilla was history. These awkward run-ins were bound to happen. No need to be petty; it would just make her look bad.
With that thought, she felt better. But after searching the hall, she couldn't find Leopold.
A waiter finally pointed her to the small garden outside.
And there she saw it—Leopold in a full-on brawl!
And his opponent? None other than his buddy Marcus!
Amara was shocked by the intensity of the fight. Seeing Leopold's battered face, she rushed forward. "Stop it! You guys, stop! You're gonna hurt yourselves!"
She reached out to grab Leopold's arm, but he shoved her away, and she hit the ground, a mess.
Oliver and Simon heard the ruckus and dashed out.
"Oh my God! What's happening?"
"Are you two nuts?"
"Stop it! Leopold! Marcus!"
Each grabbed one of the fighters. Oliver said, "Leopold, chill out, man!"
Simon added, "Marcus, don't lose it! Can't you guys talk instead of brawling?"
Leopold and Marcus yelled in unison, "Let go of me! Let go!"
Seeing they were still ready to throw punches, Oliver and Simon held on tighter.
"What's going on here?" Simon's eyes darted between them.
"Whatever it is, we can talk it out. We're all friends," Oliver tried to mediate.
Simon tried to calm Leopold, "Leopold, it's Marcus's birthday. This fight can wait."
Marcus wiped the blood from his lips with the back of his hand, glaring at the furious Leopold. He smirked. "I meant what I said. This decision was well thought out. You have no right to interfere."
With that, Marcus turned to the pale and dazed Camilla, took off his jacket, and gently draped it over her shoulders. "Are you okay? Did it scare you? I'll take you home."
Oliver and Simon were stunned, their minds reeling.
They thought, 'Marcus and Camilla? What's going on? Is this why Leopold lost it?'
Camilla snapped out of it. Seeing Marcus's outstretched hand, she subtly stepped back, took off the jacket, and handed it back.
"No need, I'll go back by myself. Don't drag me into your issues anymore. I'm not a toy for you to fight over."
"And," Camilla looked up, enunciating each word, "let's not contact each other anymore."
She meant both Marcus and Leopold.
"Camilla." Marcus's lips moved, his eyes downcast. "I'm sorry. This is my fault. If I've caused you any trouble, I'll make it up to you..."
Camilla cut him off, "If you really want to make it up, then stay away from me."
If Camilla had been confused, dumbfounded, and aggrieved at first, she was now completely calm.
Because Camilla knew, this wasn't her fault.
Marcus acted impulsively and recklessly, and Leopold was furious and violent. She was innocent.
So, Camilla refused to take on the guilt, shame, and other negative emotions. She just wanted to resolve the trouble caused by Leopold and Marcus.
However, how could Marcus let her have her way?
Marcus had gone to great lengths to arrange encounters and create opportunities to spend time with Camilla. He had finally confessed his feelings today. How could he allow Camilla to easily exit this pursuit game?
"Camilla, you can choose to refuse, but pursuing you is my right."
Camilla was exasperated, thinking, He's just stirring the pot.'
Sure enough, Leopold's already grim face turned even darker.
"Marcus, what the hell?"
Marcus shrugged. "You've hit me and yelled at me. You might as well accept it."
Camilla said to them, "You guys go ahead. I'm leaving."
With that, she turned to leave.
But Marcus didn't give her the chance. He chased after her and grabbed her shoulder.
