Chapter 125 The Stark Contrast
"Coming!" Camilla called out as she stepped out of the restroom, spotting Cynthia waving at her from inside the store.
Elodie was caught off guard.
Following Cynthia's gaze, she saw a familiar face.
Camilla!
Amara noticed her too.
Today, Camilla had on light makeup, a camel trench coat, brown suede knee-high boots, and her hair casually clipped up. She looked effortlessly chic and relaxed.
"Mrs. Russell," Camilla greeted Cynthia, linking arms with her. "Have you been waiting long? Sorry about that."
She completely ignored Elodie and Amara, not even sparing them a glance.
Elodie fumed, remembering how Camilla had dumped Leopold without a second thought, while Leopold still pined for her. It made her blood boil!
Amara, ever the opportunist, poured a cup of tea and handed it over. "Mrs. Wipere, you've been shopping for ages. You must be tired. Have some tea."
Elodie laughed out loud. "Oh my, Amara is so considerate. Unlike some people who don't even have basic manners."
Cynthia caught the jab and smiled slightly. "Mrs. Wipere, who is this?" She looked at Amara. "Aren't you going to introduce her?"
Elodie was taken aback.
Amara was pregnant with Leopold's child, but they weren't married. At best, she was a girlfriend; at worst, a mistress.
How was she supposed to introduce her?
If word got out that she was shopping with Leopold's mistress, her reputation among the socialites would be in tatters.
These women despised mistresses and illegitimate children the most. If they found out she was supporting her son's mistress and an illegitimate child, it would be utterly humiliating.
Amara looked hopeful.
What she cared about most was "status." Leopold wouldn't give it to her, but she had managed to win Elodie's favor and spent a lot of money today. She thought, 'I should be acknowledged, right?'
But Elodie said, "A friend's daughter, accompanying me shopping."
Amara's smile froze.
Cynthia responded, "Oh, I thought she was your future daughter-in-law."
"How could that be?" Elodie forced a laugh. "Leopold doesn't have a girlfriend yet."
Cynthia didn't press further and turned to Camilla. "Camilla, you have a good eye. Help me pick out a few outfits, will you?"
"Sure." Camilla had gone shopping with Cynthia before and knew exactly what styles Cynthia liked and suited her.
As Camilla went to pick out clothes, Cynthia suddenly remarked, "Camilla is so well-behaved and sensible, and she's beautiful and highly educated. I wonder which lucky man will marry her in the future."
Then she glanced at Amara. She thought, 'Do they really think people in the circle are blind? Leopold's scandal has long been the talk of the town.'
Elodie wanted to save face, but Cynthia wouldn't let her.
"Speaking of which, I have to say, girls should have self-respect. Getting pregnant out of wedlock are serious moral flaws."
Elodie's smile became strained, but she couldn't argue.
Amara's face turned pale.
Her out-of-wedlock pregnancy was a real stain, not to mention her lack of education.
Camilla had a bachelor's degree from Harmony College and was now pursuing a master's. Amara couldn't compare at all.
But Amara couldn't stand swallowing her pride!
Seeing the sales assistant bring clothes to Elodie, she had an idea and smiled as she walked over. "Let me take that."
The sales assistant was momentarily stunned.
Elodie looked at her in confusion.
Amara said, "Mrs. Wipere, let me help you pick out a few outfits too."
Elodie glanced at Cynthia, thinking, 'So you have someone to help you pick clothes? Well, so do I!'
Driven by this thought, she smiled and nodded at Amara. "Alright, I trust your taste."
She completely forgot how she had criticized Amara's fashion sense last time.
Amara immediately went to pick out clothes, pointing at this and that to the two sales assistants, exuding confidence.
Camilla, on the other hand, was completely different.
When she picked out clothes, she first looked at the color and style, then felt the fabric, and finally made a decision, asking the sales assistant to take them down and put them together as sets.
"Mrs. Russell, I think these two sets are the best. Why don't you try them on?"
Cynthia immediately took the clothes, her eyes full of anticipation and excitement.
She really loved Camilla's taste; every outfit Camilla had picked for her before was a hit.
To be honest, she preferred shopping with Camilla over her own daughter, Juniper.
She thought, 'Maybe we are so-called like-minded people.'
At this moment, Amara came over. "I'm done picking too."
Elodie went to the fitting room.
She was the first to come out, wearing a red A-line dress with a camisole and a top that Amara had picked for her. It made her look much younger.
Elodie looked at herself in the full-length mirror and was quite satisfied.
"Not bad at all."
Amara modestly smiled. "It's because you take good care of yourself; your figure is even slimmer than mine."
Elodie was pleased.
But the next second, seeing Cynthia come out of the fitting room next door, her smile froze.
Camilla had picked a light green long dress for Cynthia, with bamboo-shaped dark patterns that gave the simple satin fabric a touch of texture.
The modified style fit her body perfectly, making Cynthia look even taller and more elegant, with a gentle and refined demeanor.
Standing next to her, Elodie looked like a delicate old lady wearing clothes that didn't suit her age, trying too hard to look young.
The contrast was stark.
In the next outfit, Cynthia outshone Elodie even more.
Amara had been confident.
Elodie was relatively short, making many clothes unsuitable for her, and overall, she was hard to dress.
Amara had spent a lot of time and effort picking out these two outfits.
Amara had indeed chosen the right sizes for Elodie's height and considered her preferences. Given the brand's reputation, the clothes' design was naturally not bad, and she could have passed.
But Camilla's choices for Cynthia were outstanding, and Cynthia's stature were excellent. Elodie felt a pang of self-consciousness standing next to Cynthia, as if she were suddenly relegated to the background.
Even though both were wearing luxury brands, Elodie exuded a sense of vulgarity.
The contrast was even more pronounced when they stood face to face.
Cynthia looked at herself in the mirror, both surprised and delighted. "Camilla, this style is new for me, but I really like it. How did you come up with it?"
She was wearing a silk camisole paired with black silk wide-leg pants. She was still the same Cynthia, but her aura had completely changed.
The large silver round earrings were very eye-catching, slightly exaggerated yet exuding a sense of casualness and ease.
The previous outfit had exuded a sense of peace, while this one radiated a sense of power.
