Chapter 99 Marrying In? Daydreaming
After dropping Amara off at the school gate, Elodie gave her the usual mom talk about staying safe and looking after her baby. Then she told the driver, "Alright, let's head back."
"Yes, Mrs. Wipere."
Elodie settled into the back seat, eyeing the hideous scarf next to her. She couldn't help but sneer.
Annoyed, she chucked the scarf under the seat, yanking her hand back like she'd touched something gross.
Thinking about Amara, Elodie sighed. The girl was plain-looking and didn't have much grace.
She glanced at the scarf again. Magenta, gaudy, and outdated. No matter how you wrapped it, it was still ugly.
She had to admit that those from less affluent backgrounds simply didn't grasp it, especially when compared to Camilla, who used to send her silk scarves, jewelry, and handbags—all luxurious and perfectly suited for her, clearly selected with care.
Thinking about it made Elodie even more irritated. 'Why am I even thinking about Camilla?' she fumed.
"Mrs. Wipere, we're here," the driver uttered.
As soon as Elodie walked in, Clara rushed over, eyeing the fancy box in her hand, thinking it was something cool.
But nope, it was that ugly magenta scarf. It was uneven, ugly, and didn't even look decent.
"Mom, where'd you get this eyesore? Please don't tell me you're actually gonna wear it." Clara pinched the scarf, totally out of place.
Honestly, it was the ugliest scarf she'd ever seen.
'It's almost gross. What's with this magenta color?' she thought.
Elodie snapped, "It's from Leopold's girlfriend. She said she knitted it herself, thinking it was thoughtful. I think she just didn't wanna spend money and gave me this junk."
"If she wasn't carrying Leopold's kid, there's no way I'd accept this ugly thing."
Everything Elodie wore was designer, from clothes and bags to the diamonds in her earrings, mostly custom-made. How could such a cheap scarf match her status?
"What!?" Clara's eyes widened. "You said she's pregnant with Leopold's kid!"
Clara was genuinely shocked that Camilla hadn't gotten pregnant for years, yet Amara was expecting so quickly. It seemed evident that she was keen on marrying into wealth. Elodie said, "I just found out today. If she hadn't called me, I'd still be clueless."
Clara raised an eyebrow. "Mom, you mean she called you? Not Leopold?"
Elodie nodded. "Yeah, why?"
Clara's expression turned sly. "Think about it, why would she go around Leopold and call you directly?"
Elodie was taken aback.
"Most likely, Leopold doesn't want this kid, so she went around him and came to you," Clara analysed.
Amara was probably trying to use the baby to climb the social ladder.
In the elite circles of Imperial City, this kind of thing was common. Every woman wanted to marry rich and change her life.
Clara's eyes gleamed. "Mom, you wouldn't actually let her in and make her my sister-in-law, would you?"
Elodie frowned. "Hell no! We don't even know if this baby is a boy or a girl. Plus, I saw her today; she's plain, has zero fashion sense, and is totally unpresentable. I heard her school isn't even a big deal. How could we accept someone like that as a daughter-in-law?"
In Elodie's mind, Leopold was top-notch. No way was his wife gonna have anything less than a master's degree, preferably from some fancy school abroad.
Amara didn't even come close. The only reason Elodie even agreed to meet her was because of the baby. Marrying into the family? Dream on!
Clara shrugged, not really bothered by Elodie's plan. She tossed the scarf into the trash and wiped her hands with a wet wipe.
"Good. Amara's a nobody, and she thinks she can be my sister-in-law? She's not even as good as Camilla," said Clara.
She thought, 'Besides a barely passable face, Camilla's got nothing. What did Leopold see in her? He must be blind!'
"Enough, I don't wanna hear about Leopold's drama. Don't tell me about it. I'm heading out!" Clara grabbed some gifts and imported fruits, ready to go.
She wanted to see Aurora and try to get another shot. If Aurora agreed to expand enrollment, she'd still have a chance!
Elodie watched Clara rush out. "The roads are slippery in the cold, drive safe."
Arriving at Aurora's place, memories of being turned down last time hit her. Clara bit her lip, feeling a bit nervous.
But since this was about her grad spot, Clara finally got out of the car with the gifts.
This time she didn't bring a ton of stuff, focusing more on the thought behind it.
Before coming, Clara had practiced a bunch of times how to charm people and which angle made her smile look the best.
Clara followed the quiet path to Aurora's house, but instead of seeing Aurora, she saw a familiar figure tending to the plants in the yard.
"Camilla!" she called out.
Aurora loved her plants. Living alone, she felt that having more flowers and plants made the house feel more alive, so she had a small garden in the front yard.
Lately, she'd been busy, and the weather hadn't warmed up yet. Aurora was worried her plants would die from neglect, so she asked Camilla to help out.
Honestly, only Camilla could do the job.
First, Camilla was super meticulous. Second, she loved plants and knew her stuff.
Aurora was so happy with her that she even gave her a house key.
For the past month, Camilla had been coming over every few days.
Clara saw the gloves Camilla was wearing were dirty, and the soil, which had just been rained on, looked freshly turned. She must've been working for a while.
This time, Clara wasn't dumb enough to think Camilla was just there to work. It was clear Camilla and Aurora had a special relationship!
Clara dripped with jealousy as she said, "Camilla, I really underestimated you. Didn't think you'd be smart enough to butter up Professor Garcia like this. Is that how you aced the interview?"
Clara had heard that many students would do anything to please their mentors. Officially, they were students, but behind the scenes, they were basically personal assistants, doing whatever was needed.
