Chapter 154 Five Hundred Million Dollars

Elodie didn't see that coming. "You're the one stirring up trouble, how is this on me? Say one more word and I'll shut you up for good!"

"Bring it on! Try me!"

"Mira!" Elodie was shaking with rage. "Call Leopold and get him here now! Right this second!"

"Yes, Madam!"

The phone rang twice before it finally connected.

Leopold answered, "What's going on?"

"Sir, Elodie needs you at the hospital."

"No can do."

"But Elodie and Amara are fighting."

Leopold sighed, "Oh. Tell her she wanted to keep the baby in Amara's belly, so she s deal with the fallout. Don't bother me!"

And with that, he hung up.

When Mira tried calling again, his phone was off.

"Madam, Leopold said..."

Elodie snapped, "What did he say?"

Mira took a deep breath and said, "Leopold said you should handle the mess you made, he won't deal with it, and not to bother him."

Elodie was stunned.

Suddenly, Amara let out a scream, even louder than when she got slapped.

The hospital room turned into chaos.

The doctor rushed in, shooing everyone out. "She's in critical condition and needs emergency treatment. Everyone out, now!"

Elodie felt a pang of regret for her earlier outburst.

Half an hour later, the door opened, and the doctors and nurses came out.

Elodie rushed over. "Doctor, is my grandson okay?"

The doctor, clearly annoyed, replied, "The baby is safe for now, but the patient must stay calm. Next time, we might not be so lucky!"

Elodie sighed in relief, "Thank you, I'll make sure to be careful."

Clara had shown up fifteen minutes earlier and had a rough idea of what went down from Mira.

Hearing the doctor's words, Clara muttered, "She sure can take a beating. After all these hospital trips, her belly's still fine."

Elodie peeked into the room but didn't go in. "Clara, help me with the discharge papers."

"Discharge? Didn't the doctor say she needs a few more days of rest? Why leave now?"

"My grandson almost didn't make it; how can I stay here? I'll move to the villa and keep an eye on Amara every day to make sure she doesn't cause more trouble!"

"Mom, are you nuts? You're gonna take care of her? Be her maid?"

This was so unlike Elodie.

Clara could get that Elodie had some affection for the baby in Amara's belly, being the first grandchild and all.

But to go to such lengths for an unborn child, especially since Elodie was used to a life of luxury and now had to deal with this, Clara found it hard to believe.

"So, what's really going on? Why are you so desperate to keep that baby?"

Elodie narrowed her eyes and didn't hold back. "Remember the will your Grandpa left when he passed away? It said the family would be reorganized in ten years to share profits from the New Street Investment Project."

"I kinda remember. But what's that got to do with the baby in Amara's belly?"

"Silly girl, the New Street Investment Project wasn't making money when your grandfather passed, so the property distribution got pushed back ten years. Next year marks the tenth year, and the project's raking in cash. Your uncles are all over it, wanting their cut. Our family only has you and Leopold in the younger generation, which doesn't stack up against your uncles. If the distribution goes by headcount like the will says, we're gonna get the short end of the stick. But if you or your brother have a kid, we can get a bigger slice. I can't count on you, but there's a ready-made baby in Amara's belly, so why not use it?"

Clara suddenly got it. "Oh, I see."

"Now you get it? As long as Amara's baby is born safe and sound, we can get a lot more."

Elodie held up one hand.

Clara guessed, "Fifty million dollars?"

"Think bigger."

"Five hundred million dollars?"

Elodie smiled.

Clara's jaw dropped.

Inside the hospital room, Amara heard everything loud and clear.

This VIP room wasn't all that; the soundproofing sucked.

Amara touched her still-flat belly.

She thought, 'Five hundred million dollars. That's a ton of money.'

Staying in the hospital wasn't doing much for Amara; she just needed rest.

So on the third day, Elodie got her discharged.

This time, the baby was almost lost, so Elodie was super careful, and Amara was scared too.

For the first couple of days at home, Amara was really cautious, watching what she ate and keeping her emotions in check, worried it might affect the baby.

As time went on and she felt her belly was fine, Elodie was busy around the house, treating Amara like royalty. She gave her everything she wanted, short of the stars in the sky.

During this time, Leopold never came back to the villa.

Even when Elodie called him herself, it was no use. He either didn't pick up or flat-out said he wasn't coming back.

He'd hang up after a few words, showing he was totally fed up.

He was done with Amara and didn't even want to see her.

Amara didn't push it either.

After all, she had the baby and five hundred million dollars. Winning Leopold's heart wasn't that important anymore.

Time flew by, and Amara's belly started to show.

But some people just can't sit still. As soon as she felt a bit better, she started causing trouble.

Amara stood by the door, smiling brightly. "Elodie, I'm heading out for a prenatal checkup. Can I have some of your chicken soup when I get back?"

Elodie, lounging on the sofa, waved her hand. "Sure, I'll have Lisa make it. You can drink it when you get back."

Amara smiled. "Did you hear me wrong? I said your chicken soup."

She emphasized "your chicken soup."

Elodie frowned, her eyes flicking to Amara's slightly swollen belly. She took a deep breath and held back. "Fine, I'll make it."

"Thanks for the trouble."

When Amara got back from her checkup, Elodie's chicken soup was just ready. She poured a bowl while it was hot and set it on the table. "The chicken soup's ready, come and drink it."

With that, Elodie poured herself a bowl.

To be honest, it did taste better than Lisa's!

"Elodie, are you pregnant too?" Amara walked to the dining table and suddenly said.

Elodie almost choked.
