Chapter 158 I'm Done Serving

The visitor was Leopold's assistant, John.

He said that Leopold had an important document in the study and instructed him to come and get it.

Since it was a matter of business confidentiality and it was urgent, Elodie quickly took him to the study.

"Is this the one?"

John replied, "It should be."

"Alright then, hurry and take it to Leopold."

Amara dawdled towards the guest bedroom, pretending to accidentally brush past the two. Suddenly, she noticed the study door was ajar, leaving a small gap.

She glanced around; the second-floor hallway was quiet, and Elodie should have already escorted John downstairs.

Her eyes twinkled as she gently pushed open the door.

The L-shaped bookshelf was neatly arranged from top to bottom, filled with documents.

By the window was a desk with a tea set on it.

To the left was a light-colored wooden desk with a pen holder and a few scattered books on it.

This study was usually locked except when Mira came in to clean it regularly.

Amara was strictly forbidden from approaching it.

But now, hadn't she come in anyway?

Thinking of this, Amara couldn't help but raise an eyebrow in satisfaction. She took a few steps closer and saw two manila folders on the desk.

Neither was sealed.

She casually picked one up, opened it, and glanced at the A4 paper inside, filled with unfamiliar technical terms and numbers.

She didn't know what it was, so she randomly took out a sheet and stuffed it into the other folder, then arranged everything to look untouched.

At this moment, Elodie's voice accompanied by footsteps sounded. "Mira, where's Amara? Wasn't she just here? Where did she go?"

Amara panicked and quickly slipped out of the study before Elodie could find her.

Leaning against the wall, she picked up her phone, pretending to be engrossed in it.

Elodie frowned. "Didn't you say you were going to sunbathe? Why are you upstairs?"

Amara smiled slightly. "I found it too hot outside and suddenly didn't want to go out. Pregnant women are very sensitive to heat, you know."

Elodie was used to Amara's way of speaking. Although it was annoying, she didn't argue much.

"Do whatever you want, just don't hurt my grandson."

Amara pouted.

That evening, Leopold came back briefly.

Without even changing his shoes, he went straight to the study, grabbed two documents, and was about to leave.

Suddenly, Leopold paused.

Although the company’s document folders were standardized, they were printed by two different manufacturers.

The two factories used different types of kraft paper; one was darker, and the other was lighter.

He remembered that the darker folder was on top and the lighter one was below, but now their positions were swapped.

Someone had been in his study!

Downstairs, Elodie, seeing that Leopold had finally come back, was about to go upstairs to talk to him when she saw him come out of the study with a stern face. "Mom, did you go into my study?"

Elodie nodded. "Yes, your assistant John came to get a document yesterday, and I took him into the study. Why?"

"Did you touch the two folders on the short desk?"

"The short desk? I only opened the drawer; I didn't touch anything else. I didn't even see any folders."

Leopold held up the two documents. "These have been tampered with."

Amara feigned surprise. "The study? Yesterday, only Elodie and that assistant John went in. Could it be that someone accidentally messed it up? John wouldn't dare touch anything, so it must have been Elodie."

Leopold's gaze fell on Elodie.

Elodie's face darkened. "Shut up! I'm talking to my son; it's none of your business!"

She turned to Leopold and explained, "I did go into your study yesterday, and John waited at the door; he didn't go in. But I only opened the drawer to get the document you needed. I didn't touch anything else. Could it have been Mira who accidentally moved it while cleaning?"

Mira quickly spoke up, "Leopold instructed that nothing in the study should be touched while cleaning. I remember it clearly and am always very careful."

Leopold said, "It shouldn't be Mira. The study is only cleaned once a week, and yesterday wasn't the cleaning day."

Amara leisurely scooped a spoonful of bird's nest soup into her mouth. "I don't even have a key to the study, so I couldn't have gone in. It must have been Elodie."

Elodie was furious and wanted to tear her apart. "What nonsense are you spouting! Those are my son's documents; why would I mess with them? I'm not stupid; what good would it do me?"

Amara shrugged. "Who knows? Anyway, it wasn't me. Besides, didn't someone throw a tantrum a few days ago?"

It was a trivial matter, and Elodie often had a sharp tongue. It wasn't the first time, but at this moment, it became more significant.

Leopold checked the documents; nothing was missing, but it was like a prank, with one page from each document swapped.

It wouldn't be surprising if it was Elodie.

After all, Leopold hadn't been returning to the villa or answering her calls, and Elodie was understandably upset.

"Forget it, the documents are still here; there's no need to pursue it further." Leopold looked up, his voice calm, "But Mom, don't do this again. A mistake in the contract could cost millions of dollars."

With that, he left.

Elodie felt wronged; she hadn't done it, and now even her own son didn't believe her!

"Leopold, listen to me..."

"I have to go to the office; we'll talk later."

Clearly, he didn't want to hear her excuses.

Elodie watched Leopold leave, feeling the frustration of being unable to explain herself for the first time.

Amara, however, felt the fire wasn't big enough. She put down her spoon and pushed the bowl away in disgust, "This truffle beef stew is so awful! Mira, make me another bowl!"

"Do you think you deserve truffle beef stew with your poor taste?" Elodie was trembling with anger, remembering how Amara had deliberately stirred things up earlier, clearly trying to drive a wedge between her and her son.

It was truly malicious!

Amara frowned. "What do you mean? Do you still want your grandson or not?"

Her words only made Elodie angrier.

For the past half month, the most common thing Amara said was "grandson." Elodie had endured countless grievances and worked tirelessly for the sake of the child in Amara's belly.

And what did she get in return?

Not only was Amara ungrateful, but she was also sowing discord!

Elodie's pent-up emotions finally exploded, and she couldn't hold back any longer, cursing, "What a load of crap! I'm done serving you! I don't want a grandson from someone like you anyway!"

With that, Elodie stormed upstairs.

A moment later, she came down with a suitcase and called the driver, Lisa, and Mira, "Let's go back!"
