Chapter 138 Everyone Speaks for Her
Camilla asked, "Betty, is it gout?"
"You know?"
"Yeah. Aurora has the same thing. I've got a prescription here. It won't cure it, but it's great for pain relief and has hardly any side effects."
Betty's eyes lit up. "Awesome! Share the prescription with me later. I'll hit the pharmacy after work. Seriously, thanks a ton. My mother-in-law's in so much pain she can't sleep, and painkillers aren't cutting it. If this works, dinner's on me!"
Camilla smiled. "No need for dinner. Just happy to help."
Hector chimed in, "Have you noticed that since Camilla joined us, every problem gets solved so easily? She's like our lab's lucky star!"
Darren walked in, catching the last part. "What lucky star?"
Betty replied, "We're talking about Camilla. She's beautiful and versatile, like a lucky star."
Darren was about to agree when Doris suddenly stood up, panicked. "Someone messed with my computer! All my experimental data on the hard drive is gone!"
"What? Another virus? That shouldn't be." Hector rushed to his computer. "The IT team upgraded our firewall last time. This shouldn't happen."
Betty quickly opened her computer too.
The room got tense.
Hector said, "My data's all here, nothing's missing. What about you, Betty?"
Betty replied, "Mine's fine too."
They both looked at Darren and Camilla.
Darren and Camilla's data were all there.
So, only Doris's data was missing.
Betty said, "Check again. Maybe you saved it to another hard drive?"
Doris frowned. "I've checked everywhere. It's gone."
Everyone exchanged glances.
"How is that possible? Everyone's computers are fine except yours. It doesn't make sense."
Doris's voice grew heavy. "My computer isn't malfunctioning. Only that part of the data was deleted."
"What do you mean?" Hector had a vague suspicion.
"I mean," Doris took a deep breath, "my data was intentionally deleted!"
The room fell silent.
Hector's face darkened. "Doris, you need evidence to make such claims."
"Hector, I don't want to make such assumptions either. There are only a few of us in the lab, and it's not good to suspect anyone. But I can't think of any other reason why everyone's data is fine except mine."
Betty hesitated.
Hector remained silent.
As Doris said, her suspicion was the most likely and also the most serious.
Hector got to the point, "Who do you suspect?"
This question made everyone tense.
Doris's gaze swept over everyone, finally landing on Camilla. "We never had such issues before, but ever since Camilla joined, problems have been constant. It's normal for me to be suspicious, right?"
The accusation was directed at Camilla.
Camilla looked straight into Doris's eyes, but Doris quickly averted her gaze, refusing to make eye contact.
Betty pondered for a moment. Usually, she wouldn't speak up in such situations, but this time she said, "Deliberately deleting data is a serious offense. We've been working with Camilla for a while, and I trust her character completely. There might be a misunderstanding here. I don't think we should jump to conclusions."
Doris didn't expect Betty, who usually stayed neutral, to be the first to defend Camilla.
Hector nodded. "Camilla is so meticulous and considerate. I don't believe she would do such a thing either."
Darren's eyes flickered, hesitating to speak.
Seeing everyone defend Camilla, Doris got even angrier but tried to keep it cool. "Who knows what her true nature is? What if it's all an act? Yesterday morning, the data was fine. Today, it's gone. Yesterday afternoon, I remember Betty and Hector left first, then Darren and I left together, leaving only Camilla and Sebastian. Sebastian has no reason to do this, so it must be Camilla!"
Doris's aggressive tone seemed logical at first.
But Camilla noticed the flaw. She looked at Doris and said slowly, "You said you checked the data yesterday morning. Did you check it before leaving yesterday?"
"Of course! The data was all there!"
"Are you sure?"
Doris said, "I'm sure. What are you implying? That I'm falsely accusing you?"
Camilla calmly replied, "Alright, according to you, the data should have been deleted between the time you left yesterday and when you arrived today, right?"
"Right."
"Then let's check the surveillance footage for that period."
Betty nodded. "Yeah, I forgot about the surveillance. Our lab has 24-hour monitoring."
"Fine," Doris nodded, sneering. "Let's check the footage first, so no one can say I'm targeting you."
In the control room, Hector asked the security personnel to retrieve the footage from the past two days.
However, the footage was missing.
Betty asked, "What's going on? How can the surveillance footage be missing?"
The security personnel were also puzzled. "We have footage for the past month, except for yesterday and the day before. It's really strange."
"Isn't it obvious? Someone deliberately erased the footage from the critical period. No wonder she suggested checking the footage. She was prepared!"
Doris crossed her arms, almost explicitly accusing Camilla.
Sebastian had just finished his class and came to the lab, finding no one there. He asked the security guard and found the control room.
His calm eyes swept over everyone. "What's going on? Why is everyone here?"
Doris quickly spoke up, looking aggrieved. "Sebastian, my experimental data was maliciously deleted. I spent a week gathering that data, just finished organizing it, and was about to upload it to the system. But today, it's all gone."
She grew more emotional, her voice breaking. "Camilla was the last to leave the lab these past two days, and last night's footage is missing. She's the prime suspect! I have every reason to believe she deliberately deleted my data."
Betty and Hector, worried that Sebastian might believe Doris's one-sided story, quickly spoke up, "Sebastian, we haven't figured everything out yet."
"I don't think Camilla would do such a thing."
Darren remained unusually quiet, frowning and not saying a word.
These past few days, he and Doris had been leaving the lab on time, going out together. Doris didn't have time to complete that set of data.
Darren looked at Doris, feeling she was a bit unfamiliar for the first time.
Sebastian asked detailed questions about the time of the data loss, where she stored the data, and if there were any backups.
Doris answered each question, and the details matched up.
This made Camilla look even more suspicious.
Betty and Hector wanted to defend her but didn't know how, feeling anxious.
At this moment, Camilla, the most suspicious person, slowly raised her eyes, calmly looking at everyone before finally focusing on Doris. "It's easy to find out who deleted the data."
