Chapter 220 Deception to the End
Marcus only said, "Shut your mouth. Don't say what you shouldn't, or I won't mind helping you shut it."
With that, he hung up immediately.
The driver held the phone, his back already drenched in sweat.
As night fell, Leopold stood motionless in front of the floor-to-ceiling window.
Watching the sun slowly set, the sky gradually covered in darkness, and the shadows growing wildly in unknown corners.
When it was completely dark, the glass reflected his tall figure.
Suddenly, he picked up his phone and dialed a number.
The other end answered quickly.
Leopold spoke up, "Is it fun, Marcus?"
Marcus paused. "Leopold, what crazy thing are you up to now?"
Leopold smirked. "Didn't Solon call you?"
Solon, the driver's name.
Marcus fell silent.
Leopold said, "Then he should have told you, they're still alive, right?"
Marcus remained silent.
"What a pity, Solon was afraid of going to jail, so he didn't dare to kill. This way, I can't be charged with hiring a hitman or inciting a crime. Your plan is as good as wasted."
Marcus's eyes darkened. "When did you figure it out?"
"We've been friends for so many years. You know me, so why wouldn't I know you?"
Elodie had clearly cut off Clio and Travis's financial support and had the hotel kick them out.
But they were still living comfortably, moving to another five-star hotel and continuing to hang around the company.
How could they have persisted without someone supporting them?
Marcus chuckled, "I underestimated you."
"Why?" Leopold's veins bulged as he spoke each word deliberately, "Why set me up?"
Despite being friends, Marcus was determined to send him to jail!
If Solon had really killed them, Leopold would have been arrested. To reduce his sentence, Solon would naturally reveal the mastermind.
Inciting murder, and for two lives, would then be sensationalized by the media, causing a public outcry.
What a sensational headline, a rich kid hiring a hitman to kill!
It would easily stir public anger.
The ultimate goal was to influence the trial through public opinion, leading to a harsher sentence.
With such a setup, even Leopold's powerful connections couldn't save him from punishment.
"Marcus, you're ruthless."
"Haven't you figured it all out?"
Figured out that Solon wouldn't dare to kill, and figured out that it was Marcus behind it all.
Leopold gritted his teeth. "I considered you a friend. Why? Because of Camilla?"
"Hahaha, friends?" Marcus suddenly laughed, "I wish I had never been friends with you!"
Leopold also laughed, revealing the truth. "Yes, we were friends, so Camilla will never accept you."
Marcus's laughter abruptly stopped.
"You think sending me to jail will change that? In Camilla's eyes, you're just her ex-boyfriend's good friend. She will never accept you!"
"Shut up!"
"What? Angry now? Hahaha, Marcus, you finally get a taste of your own medicine! Serves you right!"
Given Marcus's caution, his plan shouldn't have been so crude.
At first, Leopold didn't suspect him at all.
Too many flaws, too many loose ends.
Marcus was too smart for that.
But Leopold forgot, no one was always calm and rational; everyone made mistakes in haste.
"I just didn't expect you to go this far for Camilla."
Nor did he expect Camilla to mean so much to Marcus that he would take such a risk.
"Set up? Marcus chuckled, "Not really. Just going with the flow, giving them a little help."
As Leopold said, the plan was full of holes. If Marcus had personally designed it, even if it didn't kill, it would have severely damaged Leopold.
"If you can't even avoid such a simple trap, you deserve to go to jail."
A no-loss deal, so why not do it?
If it worked, great, send Leopold to jail, or at least bind him to Amara forever.
If not, no big deal, he was happy to cause trouble for Leopold.
"Despicable!" Leopold gritted his teeth, "You did this to me for a woman?"
Marcus sighed. "She's not just any woman."
She was Camilla!
Leopold sneered. "No need to act all sentimental in front of me."
Marcus replied, "You just don't understand."
"Really?" Leopold scoffed, "Don't understand your selfishness, or your scheming? Marcus, don't make yourself out to be so noble. If you really liked her, why did you just watch during the six years we were together?"
Watched Camilla suffer.
Watched her heart break completely.
Leopold's mind had never been clearer, "Don't give me that friend's girlfriend excuse. You have no heart, so how could you be morally bound? Let me tell you the truth, you did it on purpose! You watched Camilla get hurt and tormented by me, so she would finally decide to leave me, giving you a chance. You watched Camilla struggle in pain, despair in her struggle, and finally transform into someone who moved you. Isn't that selfish?"
Loving someone meant not wanting to see them hurt.
But what did Marcus do?
He was like a cold spectator, allowing and even subtly pushing everything to happen.
Leopold continued, "Your chance was built on Camilla's pain. You didn't stop it; you allowed me to hurt her. How are you any different from me? And now, using Clio and her son to set me up, Marcus, what do you think Camilla would feel if she saw your true face?"
Marcus's breath hitched on the other end of the line.
For the first time in days, Leopold felt as relieved. "Camilla is a simple and pure person, she hates scheming and manipulation, and you are exactly that kind of man. Admit it, Camilla will never love you. She only likes men like Sebastian, who are clean and upright."
Once, Leopold was like that too.
But now, neither of them deserved her!
Marcus shouted, "Bullshit! You may be out, but don't drag me down with you! Whether Camilla ends up with me is uncertain, but she definitely won't get back with you, you can be sure of that!"
This was the first time Leopold saw Marcus lose his cool.
Marcus was panicking.
And Leopold laughed.
It seemed he wasn't the only one who liked to deceive himself.
Since neither was willing to let go, they might as well continue the deception to the end!
Leopold said coldly, "Don't worry, I won't tell her."
Not only that, he would actively keep it a secret.
Leopold thought, 'Because losing something when he's closest to getting it is the most despairing, isn't it?'
