Chapter 208 Racing Heartbeat
Camilla was puzzled.
Simon explained, "Marcus is the boss."
After going around in circles, it still came back to someone familiar.
Ending the call, Camilla sighed and resignedly dialed Marcus.
What she said that day, "I should stay away from people like you," wasn't a lie.
Simon was too cunning; if she was not careful, she'd fall into his trap.
So, the best and most effective way Camilla could think of was to stay away.
However, not long after saying that, she found herself reaching out to him again.
It was quite embarrassing.
In the hotel, Simon put away his phone and glanced back at Juniper, who was still sound asleep on the bed, and immediately felt a surge of anger.
"Who told me to be on time, not a minute late! And what happened? I got here, and you're still sleeping! I've been waiting here for forty minutes, Juniper, don't you feel any guilt?"
Juniper moved a bit on the bed, then turned over and continued sleeping.
Simon angrily walked to the bedside. "Tell me, did you go out partying again last night?"
As he questioned her, his eyes scanned every corner of the room like a radar.
Fortunately, he didn't find any signs of another man.
Suddenly, his gaze paused on the nightstand.
Two water glasses!
Simon felt a surge of anger, coming quickly and without reason. "Juniper Russell!"
A pillow flew over and hit him on the head.
Juniper sat up, looking very irritable. "Enough already? Stop nagging! If you don't wanna wait, then get out!"
No one could disturb her sleep!
Simon was stunned.
She was still so righteously scolding him?
"Get out!"
Simon was almost furious to death.
He thought, 'Fine, I'll leave!'
Just as Simon was about to turn around and leave, planning to give Juniper a lofty back view, he suddenly remembered something and stopped abruptly.
"Fuck." Simon cursed.
Another half hour passed, and Juniper finally woke up.
She yawned and casually ran her fingers through her messy hair, looking lazy and content.
Suddenly, she paused. "Why are you still here?"
Simon, sitting on the sofa opposite the bed, replied gloomily, "Leave and take the air to meet my mom?"
A week ago Simon's mom, Natalia Ruth, had invited Juniper to their house for the weekend.
Juniper had readily agreed.
Today was the weekend.
Yesterday, Simon had called to remind her, and Juniper, who was busy at the time, had said, "Sure, tomorrow at nine in the morning. If you're a minute late, you're dead."
And what happened?
He arrived on time, and she was still sleeping!
Juniper looked confused. "Did I tell you to be here at nine?"
Simon sneered. "I have a recording."
He started to take out his phone.
"You're a freak, recording phone calls?"
"Better safe than sorry, and now it's coming in handy, isn't it?"
"Fine, I forgot. Wait, how did you get into my house?" Juniper suddenly realized.
Simon replied, "I entered the password."
"How do you know my password?"
"You told me at the bar, remember?"
"Did I?"
"Yes! You have a bad temper, and a terrible memory too. What's wrong with you?"
Juniper threw another pillow at him. "Shut up!"
Simon dodged nimbly, clearly experienced.
Juniper reached for another pillow, but...
"Don't bother, it's with me." Simon patted behind him.
Juniper was dumbfounded. "How did it get to you?"
Simon was speechless. Her memory was really bad. "You already threw it once. This is the second time, thank you."
"Oh."
How awkward.
Juniper. "What time is it now?"
"Ten-thirty."
"No rush, no rush, it's still early. Taking time to dress up for meeting the future mother-in-law is understandable, right? Could you get me some..."
Simon quickly responded, "Water, right?"
He grabbed a cup from the vanity, already filled with water. "Hurry up and drink, then get up and get ready to go out!"
Juniper reached for the cup and immediately noticed something was off. "Is this warm water?"
"Yes!"
Juniper said, "Go get me some ice water."
"Are you sure you can handle drinking something so cold in the morning?" Even though he himself drank ice water in the morning.
But they were different; she was a woman!
"So what if I'm a woman?" Juniper rolled her eyes, "Who told you all women drink warm water? Ridiculous!"
"My..."
"Your ex-girlfriends, right?" Juniper interjected with a smile.
Simon fell silent.
Juniper said, "Idiot!"
"Can you mind your language?"
"Let me ask you, did your ex-girlfriends drink coffee? Eat sushi? Enjoy iced cocktails?"
"Why are you asking?"
"Which of those isn't cold or even raw? Did they eat or not?"
Simon was stumped.
Juniper stretched lazily and got out of bed. "I don't know when it started, but drinking warm water became a mark of a proper woman. What if I don't like it?"
Simon replied gloomily, "So you're not proper."
"Do you want a beating?"
He instinctively stepped back.
"Go get me some ice water. I'm going to change. Oh, by the way, the two cups on the nightstand, I used them a few days ago and forgot to clean them. Take them to the kitchen; the cleaner will wash them later."
Simon asked, "Those two cups were both used by you?"
"Who else? A ghost?"
"Wait here, I'll get your water!"
Juniper was puzzled.
Why was he smiling like an idiot just to get water?
When Simon returned with the ice water, Juniper had already changed.
She stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, with the curtains fully open.
Sunlight streamed in, casting a golden glow on the wooden floor.
Juniper stood in the golden light, wearing a blue dress that reached her ankles, the fitted cut accentuating her curvy figure. Hearing footsteps, she turned to look at him in the bright sunlight.
Backlit, the interplay of light and shadow on Juniper was perfect, creating a contrast of brightness and darkness.
She looked like a holy angel, yet also like a devil from hell.
In that instant, Simon felt the air grow thin, and his breathing slowed.
He stood there, clearly hearing his own racing heartbeat.
