Chapter 95 Belated Affection
Amara was shaking like a leaf, and Leopold's cold shoulder felt like a slap in the face.
She never thought he'd be so ruthless, not even giving her a shot to make things right.
No way she was gonna take this lying down!
Putting on an innocent act, she pleaded, "Babe, I messed up, I know, but the kid's innocent! Look, here's the ultrasound. The baby's got a heartbeat already. Can you really let him grow up without a dad?"
Leopold glanced at the blurry ultrasound in her trembling hand, barely making out anything.
He smirked and said, all chill, "That's why I told you to get rid of it. Better not be born at all than grow up without a dad."
Honestly, Leopold wasn't even sure it was his kid.
With an air of indifference, Leopold turned and headed upstairs.
Amara stared at his cold, retreating back, her fists clenched, anger and frustration boiling inside her.
She thought, 'Am I really doomed just because of what I did? I was just fighting for my love; I did nothing wrong! It's all Camilla's fault. If she hadn't seduced Leopold, making him unwilling to let go, I wouldn't have done such crazy things!'
The thought made Amara grit her teeth in hatred, her pretty face twisting with rage. She knew she couldn't just sit around and do nothing.
Suddenly, an idea popped into her head; maybe there was still a way out.
On Saturday, Camilla got a call from the police station. The voice on the other end was kinda apologetic, but she stayed cool.
Camilla had already seen this coming. She just wanted to clear her conscience. As for the rest, she'd leave it to fate.
After hanging up, her phone buzzed with a short video notification.
The defamatory post on the forum had been taken down by the admin as things got heated.
The school had traced the IP to another state, but by the time they got there, it was already deactivated, clearly planned out.
They didn't catch the person, but because of this mess, she had become "famous" even before starting school.
Someone had uploaded her photo, and even though it was just a side profile, she was voted as the campus beauty of Harmony College.
Camilla turned off her phone and planned to work on her thesis. Just then, the doorbell rang.
She remembered she had just ordered takeout, so she figured it must be the delivery guy and opened the door.
But there stood Leopold. Without thinking, she tried to shut the door again.
Leopold quickly propped the door open, using a bit of force to keep it from closing.
"Camilla, wait. Hear me out. I know everything that happened at Reefhaven Isles. I'm here to apologize."
Afraid she'd shut him out again before he could say much, Leopold quickly spilled his guts.
He stated, "Amara played me, made me soft-hearted, so I didn't see her true colors sooner. That was my bad. I've already dumped her, and from now on, there'll be no more drama."
Leopold looked down at her, his tone almost pleading. "Can we start over? I really can't live without you."
During this time, Leopold had realized that Camilla was the only one he ever wanted. He couldn't stand the thought of losing her. And those sweet memories? They haunted him.
Camilla looked at him, all humbled and pleading. The once cocky Leopold was now practically begging. If this had been before, she would've jumped into his arms without a second thought.
But now? It didn't mean a thing.
Camilla listened to him with a blank face, her hand gripping the doorknob like a lifeline.
She spelled it out, "I'm sorry, I refuse."
No forgiveness, no getting back together.
Leopold got all worked up. "Why? Just tell me why! Before, you wouldn't take me back because of Amara. Now that I've dumped her, why are you still saying no?"
He'd already given up so much; what more did she want?
Compared to Leopold, Camilla was ice-cold. She uttered, "In those days, you were my entire universe. You meant everything to me."
She'd even ditched grad school for him. When their love was at its peak, Leopold was her whole world, the guy she wanted to spend forever with!
Leopold's eyes lit up, his voice urgent and almost desperate. "Isn't it the same now? If you want, we can go back to how things were."
Camilla lowered her eyes and shook her head. "No one stays in the same place forever. You won't, and neither will I."
"After we broke up, I realized there's so much more to life than just you. So many things worth chasing."
Leopold's eyes darkened. "What things are worth chasing? Grad school? Studying? Even if you get your master's, you'll still have to work. And work's just for making money, right? How much do you want? I can give it to you."
Camilla frowned. "I don't want your money."
Leopold sneered, "Didn't you take that fifty million dollar check? Now you're saying you don't want money? Do you think I'll buy that? Or were you after my money from the start?!"
In his rage, Leopold started spouting nonsense.
Seeing him get more and more ridiculous, Camilla stopped responding. She pushed the door, ready to shut it.
Her move was quick and caught Leopold off guard, making him step back.
"Do you think grad school is a walk in the park? Those tough courses, lab work—you used to ace them, you were brilliant. But it's been years; do you think you're still the same Camilla?" Leopold stated.
Before he could finish, the door slammed shut. The noise echoed down the hallway.
Leopold was stunned, and in his anger, he swore she'd regret it.
By early April, spring was in full swing. Tree branches were budding, and the wind had lost its bite.
Camilla went to visit Aurora. It was the first time she'd seen Aurora since the new year.
As the days got warmer, Aurora's health was on the mend. She was back in the research game, so busy she barely had time to eat at home.
When she saw Camilla, she immediately handed her a stack of materials, all first-hand data from her lab, along with related research papers.
Camilla skimmed through them. Some of the papers were pretty old and, because they were so niche, hard to find online. Gathering all this must've taken a ton of effort!
Seeing Camilla purse her lips, Aurora knew what she was thinking.
She explained, "These materials were all from your senior classmates. It's all thanks to them! I couldn't have found so much good stuff on my own."
