Chapter 227 Let's Go Together

Harper gave a faint smile and said, "I'll think about it."

She had already planned to go abroad and didn't want to upset Abigail. She genuinely liked her and saw her as a mother figure.

Abigail finally breathed a sigh of relief. She had said everything she needed to, and neither of them felt like talking more, so they parted ways.

In the ward, Audrey looked at the slightly sickly but still handsome man and joked, "I thought after all this time, I'd give you a big hug when I got back. Didn't expect you to be so weak now."

"Why are you in a dress?" Francis asked.

Audrey had always dressed like a boy. When they were kids, Francis had mistaken her for a boy at first.

After she went abroad, they had rarely seen each other. His perception of her fashion choice stopped updating since she was around 15.

Audrey's face stiffened, and she retorted, "Doesn't it look good?"

Francis was noncommittal.

He had never really cared about how women looked. Only when he first saw Harper did her smile melt his heart.

Audrey's smile froze for a moment, then she returned to normal and nudged him with her shoulder, saying casually, "If you're not used to it, just think of me as the boy you used to mistake me for. I haven't changed anyway."

Francis glanced at her and suddenly grabbed her wrist.

"Where did you get that bracelet?"

Audrey winced in pain and frowned. "Your mom gave it to me."

Francis frowned and said, "Take it off."

Audrey was stunned and incredulous. "Francis, why are you being so petty?"

Francis didn't want to explain and repeated, "Take it off."

Audrey became really angry, and her eyes turned red with grief.

She reached to pull off the bracelet, but in her haste, she accidentally dropped it on the ground.

The bracelet broke.

Francis looked at the broken bracelet, feeling a heavy weight in his chest, and suddenly got angry. "Get out!"

Audrey was frightened by his sudden outburst and stood there at a loss.

Just then, Abigail came in.

Seeing the scene, she walked over and put her arm around Audrey's shoulder, asking, "What's wrong, Audrey?"

This question made Audrey even more aggrieved.

She sobbed, "Abigail, Francis made me take off the bracelet, and I didn't mean to break it!"

Abigail looked at the broken bracelet, understood immediately, and glared at Francis, "It's just a bracelet; why are you making such a fuss?"

Audrey had never been so wronged and choked out, "Abigail, how much was it? I'll pay you back."

"We're all family; there's no need."

Abigail then looked at Francis and scolded, "Audrey just got back. She may still be jet-lagged, but she came to see you. This is how you treat a guest?"

Francis's face was cold and frightening. He didn't even look at Audrey; he stared at Abigail and asked, "Did you give her this bracelet?"

Abigail's heart trembled, but she quickly steadied herself. "Yes, we just met, and I didn't have time to prepare a proper gift."

Francis's lips tightened, and he stared at Abigail for a while before saying coldly, "Mom, Harper used to like you so much."

Abigail was rendered speechless by this and awkwardly said, "But she doesn't want it anymore."

"I'm tired; you should leave," Francis said coldly, having had enough.

"Francis, you..." Abigail said angrily.

"Get out," Francis snapped.

Abigail's face turned pale. It was the first time Francis had been so disrespectful to her.

Harper walked to the door of Keith's room and heard noises inside.

Startled, she was about to go in when she saw Addison come out crying, holding her face.

Harper quickly helped Addison sit on a bench outside and asked about Keith's condition.

Addison hugged her and cried, "The doctor said Keith's wound is infected and getting worse. He might need an amputation."

Harper's heart skipped a beat. An amputation? How could it be so serious? "Did the doctor really say that?" she asked, disbelief in her voice.

Addison's tears flowed even more. "Yes, my son, who is so excellent and capable, how will he live without a leg?"

Harper felt like the sky was falling. Keith was such an outstanding man; how could he accept this?

Addison blurted out, "Harper, you won't leave Keith for this, right? He got hurt saving you. You won't abandon him, will you?"

Harper was stunned. Hadn't Keith explained to Addison that they were a fake couple? She murmured, "Addison, Keith, and I..."

Before she could finish, Addison suddenly became emotional. She got to her knees, tears streaming down her face. "Harper, please, don't leave him now. He won't be able to take the blow. If anything happens to him, I don't want to live either."

Harper was shocked by her actions and quickly reached out to help her up. Doctors and nurses passing by gave her strange looks as if she were an ungrateful woman. Harper's eyes turned red. "Please get up and talk, okay?"

Addison refused to get up and called her husband over. "Bob, come and beg Harper not to abandon Keith."

Harper was at a loss for words. Fortunately, Bob was more rational. He came over and scolded Addison, "What are you doing?"

Addison was pulled up by Bob and sat on the bench, still crying. Bob didn't look too good either. He said to Harper, "I'm sorry, she got too emotional. Did she scare you?"

Harper nodded. "It's okay. I can understand her."

It was an amputation for their son; it was natural for them to be so emotional.

Bob said softly, "Harper, actually, there's still a chance to save Keith's leg. I just asked some friends abroad, and there have been cases of successful treatment. He might not need an amputation. Although the chances are slim, we can't give up, right?"

Harper's heart lifted at the thought of a chance for a cure. "If there's a chance, of course, we can't give up."

Bob looked troubled. "But Keith won't listen to us. I know he's afraid of another blow. So, could you talk to him?"

Addison also held her hand tightly, her face full of pleading. "Harper, I can tell Keith will listen to you. Could you talk to him?"

Harper nodded. They didn't need to ask; she would talk him into that plan. After all, Keith had got hurt because of her.

Keith's room was a mess. He lay on the bed, staring at his leg, his face showing unprecedented defeat. Harper felt a pang in her heart. "Keith, I'm sorry..."

Keith saw it was her and suppressed his anger, his tone softening. "It's okay, it's not your fault."

Harper bit her lip. "I heard from your dad that there's a treatment abroad that may save your leg."

Keith's eyes darkened, and he refused, "No. Harper, don't try to persuade me."

"But there's hope. Why are you giving up?"

"Just leave. I'm not going abroad." Keith closed his eyes to end the conversation.

Harper didn't want to give up. "So you're planning to let your leg rot? Keith, I know you're not a man who will lie down when faced with setbacks. Don't give up on any possibility, okay?"

Keith's eyelashes fluttered slightly as if he was touched, but he still didn't want to face it.

Seeing him, usually so well-dressed and spirited, so dejected, Harper's heart ached, and she felt even more guilty. She choked up, "Keith, don't give up, okay? Let's go together. I'll be with you and help you heal your leg."

Keith opened his eyes, his gaze icy. "Do you know what you're saying?"
