Chapter 82 Is She Dead?

The word ‘honey’ caused Harper heartache.

She had no strength to pull her arm back and only managed to squeeze two words through her clenched teeth. "Let go!"

The undisguised disgust in her eyes broke Francis’ heart, but he still let go of her hand.
Harper turned around, dragging her exhausted footsteps, and left like a broken puppet.

In the next second, a thud sounded.

She fell to the ground, motionless.
Francis’ face went pale, and for a moment, he felt like he was about to lose her.

"Harper!"

He rushed over, picked her up, and shouted, "Get the car and head straight to the hospital!"

...

In the Hospital, Harper lay on the bed in a coma, her mind filled with intimate images of Francis and Chloe holding hands.

She had given up her pride and arrogance, pleading for him to come and see her grandma, but what responded to her was only his cold mockery.

"Chloe is my true love. You’d better not overestimate yourself..."

She was heartbroken as if it was being pulled in different directions, causing her immense pain and making it difficult for her to breathe.

Harper's forehead was covered in sweat as she woke up in agony.

"Harper?" A deep voice sounded in her ear.

Her consciousness slowly focused as the scent of strong disinfectant filled her nostrils.
"Harper, what happened?"

Francis tightly held her hand. His deep, charming eyes were filled with bloodshot veins as if he had gone through a long ordeal.

"Why are you here?" Harper pulled her hand back, her face filled with resistance. "Get out! I don't want to see you!"

"Harper, calm down..."

A fleeting shadow of sadness danced across Francis’ eyes before they settled on Harper's belly, where a soft glow of tenderness replaced it.

"Did you know that you're pregnant?"

No one knew how happy Francis felt when the doctor said Harper was pregnant.
It felt like a new lease on life.

He had always hesitated about letting Harper get pregnant, but the unexpected baby just came in time.

He was sure that Harper wouldn't bring up divorce again now that they had a baby.

Francis couldn't help but reach out, wanting to touch Harper's belly through the blanket, but she coldly brushed his hand aside.

"This is my baby," said Harper.

With a calm tone, Harper confirmed it.

Francis stared at her. "Why didn't you tell me?"

A touch of cold mockery flashed in Harper's eyes. She thought, ‘Why? Tell you and let you take me to the hospital for an abortion? Has he ever wanted to have a baby with me?
‘All he wanted was Chloe's child.’

Exhausted, she said indifferently, "I can handle it myself."

"Is this how you're handling it?" Francis glanced at the intravenous tube and said coldly. "Handling it by lying in a hospital bed?"

Because of severe anemia, Harper was in poor condition.

Francis didn't dare to listen when the doctor gave an account of Harper’s condition just now.

Francis thought Harper didn't attach much importance to her pregnancy at all.

Harper remained stubbornly silent. Her eyes seemed to be a bit rounder now due to weight loss. At the sight of Harper’s change, Francis suddenly had no heart to throw any harsh words at her. His thin lips pursed for a moment before he said, "It won't happen again."

Harper paused for a moment.

Harper thought, ‘He said it won't happen again?

‘What won't happen again? Won't he abandon me again?

‘To me, however, it would happen numerous times in the future since it had happened once.
‘Whenever it involved Chloe, he would never choose to stay by my side.
‘Not even once!’

Seeing that she didn't speak, Francis tried to ease the tension and explained, "I know you hate that I didn't come to see your grandma one last time, but I really couldn’t leave Chloe alone at that time. She spent two days in the ICU..."

"Humph..." Harper sneered.

She thought, ‘A person who spent two days in the ICU could still ask Amelia to cause trouble for me?’

"Then did she die?"

This question caught Francis off guard. In his memory, Harper was so kind that she didn’t even want to step on an ant.

Francis wondered why she could easily say such malicious words now.

Looking at the vacant look in Francis's eyes, Harper sneered, "Let me answer that for you. She didn't die, right? Since she didn't die, what makes you so sure it won't happen again in the future?

If she does it again next time, will you ignore her and choose me instead?"
"It's not like that, Harper. I..."

Without waiting for him to finish, Harper became emotional and interrupted, "You won't! Francis, you will choose her over me! Let me tell you. It is my child. I will raise the baby myself. You don't need to worry. We've already signed the divorce agreement, and I have reached an agreement with your mom that we can get divorced after a month. There are only a few days left, and you can finally be free. So..."

With a sarcastic look in her eyes, Harper continued, "Stop pretending."

He had clearly stated before that he didn't want children, so Harper thought it was ridiculous that he pretended to care about the child now.

In choosing Chloe once more, he had driven their already fractured marriage to the edge of a precipice.

With a newfound clarity, she acknowledged the situation and resolved to release herself, facilitating the union of these two people. As a barrier, she would willingly step aside.

Francis pursed his lips and spoke after a while, "I disagree."

"You disagree? What right do you have to disagree?" said Harper indifferently.
"Francis, you broke my heart."

There was no room for reconciliation between them after that phone call.

This time, no matter what he said, she wouldn't believe him anymore.
She wouldn't humiliate herself anymore.
Her broken heart couldn't withstand any more blows.

The words from Harper cut deep into Francis's heart.
He knew that Harper had truly made up her mind, but he was unwilling to let go because he couldn't imagine a life without her.

Just the thought alone caused his heart to ache severely.
He wanted to hug her, but the moment he reached out, Harper turned away with rejection and disgust.

Francis held her shoulders instead and earnestly promised. "Harper, I will make it up to you. I promise I will always be by your side when you need me the most. Let's not fight anymore. Let's be together from now on."

"How will you make it up?" Harper asked.
Hope rose in Francis's heart. "I will do whatever you want me to do. Can you trust me?"

Harper wanted to laugh. If she were as softhearted as she used to be, she would have long surrendered to this man's tenderness.

But if he really cared about her even a little, he wouldn't have chosen to appear three days after her grandma's death.

In the end, Chloe was always the most important person in his heart.
And what Amelia said at the hospital that day meant that the hospital's matters were also related to Chloe.

Harper believed in her intuition.

Chloe wanted to be the last person standing, manipulating others to achieve her goals and killing two birds with one stone.

No woman could calmly face someone who was determined to hurt her, especially when this person also wanted to harm the baby in the woman’s belly.

Had it not been for Aurelio's intervention that fateful day, she might have faced the heartbreaking prospect of a miscarriage. Protecting her unborn child and her grandmother became paramount, yet Chloe's relentless antagonism pushed her to her limits.

The conflict between them seemed insurmountable. She refused to endure Chloe's presence if it meant risking harm to her baby once more. With a tone that belied the weight of her words, she broached the subject delicately, "Chloe played a role in my grandmother's ordeal. Could you assist me in seeking justice?"

Francis almost instinctively denied it. "It can't be Chloe."

Harper stared at him with mocking eyes. His meaning was obvious.
