Chapter 428 What's Wrose
Corey was just about to chuck that rock through the window when he got yanked back and hit the ground with a thud.
Harper spotted Vincent and was like, 'What the heck is he doing here on this empty road?'
Lila saw her kid bawling on the ground and went full mama bear on Vincent, scratching and pulling at him. Vincent could handle dudes no problem, but he was all awkward dealing with a woman. He just kept dodging Lila's wild swings.
Harper rolled down the window and yelled, "Vincent, chill out!"
Lila saw Harper and got even more pissed, thinking Harper had set her up. She lunged at Harper, claws out. Vincent, who'd been trying to be a gentleman, finally snapped. He grabbed Lila and tossed her to the ground.
Lila rolled around, screaming, "He's killing me!"
Vincent frowned, thinking, 'Man, this lady is nuts.'
Just then, police sirens started wailing in the distance. Lila, still on the ground, looked shocked and sat up, glaring at Harper. "You called the cops?"
Harper nodded. "Yep, sure did."
Lila was fuming, realizing the "friend" she called was actually the police. No wonder she couldn't understand them.
Lila was so mad she could spit! She and Corey had pulled this scam a bunch of times, but this was their first fail. They always went for luxury cars, figuring the owners were too busy to bother reporting it.
Lila snarled, "Fine, I'll tell the cops you two hit me and my son. You'll pay big time."
Corey, still on the ground, groaned, "You hit me. You hit me."
Harper, cool as a cucumber, said, "Lady, you do know cars have dash cams, right?"
Lila's face went pale. How could she forget that? Usually, no one argued with her; they just paid up. So she hadn't thought of it before she threatened Harper.
Before Lila could react, the cops were out of their car, slapping cuffs on Corey. Corey, clueless, just giggled and went along. Lila screamed, "Corey, they're taking you away!"
Corey suddenly freaked out, thrashing around and foaming at the mouth like he was having a seizure. The cops scrambled to help him, calling for an ambulance. In the chaos, Lila made a run for it.
Harper was ticked off; Lila just ditched her own kid.
After the cops sent Corey off in the ambulance, they took a quick statement from Harper. One of the cops said, "Ma'am, thanks for the info. We've had similar reports lately. They didn't just target your car; other owners either didn't report it or did after the scammers were long gone. You're pretty sharp."
Harper felt good about helping. At least she stopped them from scamming others. She said, "That woman ran off, but my dash cam got a clear shot of her. You can use it."
"Thanks," the cop said.
After the cops left, Vincent gave Harper a thumbs up. "Nice work."
Harper grinned and asked, "Vincent, what are you doing here?"
"I just finished a lecture in Pinnacle Town and was heading back to the city," Vincent said.
Seeing Harper's spare tire was toast, Vincent asked, "Where you headed? I can give you a lift."
Harper shook her head. "No need. My driver’s bringing another car."
Vincent nodded. "Cool, I'll wait with you till they get here."
Harper thought it was a solid plan; after all that craziness, she didn't want to be alone. But no matter how long they waited, the driver was a no-show. Harper checked her phone and realized the screen was busted and it wouldn't turn on.She borrowed Vincent's phone to call the driver. The driver explained he had misheard her and ended up in the wrong spot. He'd been trying to reach her but couldn't get through. Harper asked where he was and found out he was still pretty far away.
Seeing her worried look, Vincent mouthed, "I'll take you."
Harper knew she couldn't wait any longer, so she nodded, told the driver to take the car back, and grabbed her black handbag from the car.
She said to Vincent, "Sorry for the hassle, Vincent."
Vincent smiled warmly, "No biggie, I'm not busy anyway."
After hopping in the car, Harper gave him the address. Once they hit the main road, Harper asked Vincent to pull over in an open area and said, "Vincent, I'll be right back."
She remembered Molly's advice to keep quiet, so she didn't explain anything to Vincent.
Vincent didn't pry either. He took a spare phone from the glove compartment and handed it to her. "Call me if you need anything."
Harper nodded and walked into the alley Molly had mentioned, looking for the red brick houses. She walked to the deepest part of the alley before finding the yard; it was pretty hidden. As she reached the gate, she heard chaotic shouting and a kid's heart-wrenching cries from inside.
Harper hurried in and saw the fierce Marion Fisher dragging a kid on the ground. Marion had a cigarette in his mouth, baring his teeth, and said viciously, "If you can't pay me, I'll sell this kid!"
A nanny in a yellow dress was holding the kid tightly, crying and shouting, "No, the kid is sick; you can't take him away."
Marion was unmoved and sneered, "This kid ruined my fruit. Ten grand is already a lenient price; it was imported and very expensive."
The nanny cried, "My kid didn't mean it. Sir, you left the melon in the middle of the road, and he kicked it by accident. How could a small child break it with a weak kick?"
"Are you saying I'm extorting you?" Marion shouted.
Even though she knew he was extorting them, the nanny didn't dare provoke Marion. No one could help them here. She dropped to her knees, rubbing her hands together, and pleaded, "No, no, I don't have that much cash on me right now. Give me some time, and I'll have my friend bring it to you."
"You're waiting for reinforcements, aren't you? Trying to play tricks on me." Marion suddenly kicked the woman hard. The nanny's mouth bled from his kick, but she still didn't let go of the kid.
Marion had searched the place and found no cash; she must have hidden it somewhere. He kicked her twice more, cursing, "Trying to play tricks on me, huh? I'll show you."
Harper was stunned at the first sight of the little boy. He looked so familiar, like someone she knew. But the nanny and kid's heart-wrenching cries left her no time to think. She grabbed a stick from beside the gate and rushed at Marion, whacking him hard on the head. Marion fell to the ground, clutching his bleeding head, and cursed, "Who?"
Harper grabbed the nanny and the kid, whispering, "Molly sent me. Let's go."
Afraid Marion would get up and cause more trouble, she took the nanny's hand and ran. But just as they reached the gate, they bumped into a woman!
Harper looked closely and saw it was Lila, the scammer.
What's worse, Marion called her Mom.
Harper was shocked! They were all family.
Lila's eyes filled with venom as she grabbed Harper's waist and shouted, "Marion, close the gate. I'm gonna kill this woman."
