Chapter 613 Giving Up on Dreams
In the hospital room, Molly lay there, completely still, just like she had been for the past three days. Robert was practically harassing the doctors, demanding updates on Molly's condition every hour.
Truth was, Molly was teetering between life and death. The doctor mentioned she might live another ten years if things went well, but she could also die at any moment.
That last part set Robert off. He beat the doctor up, calling him unfit to practice medicine. The doctor felt pretty wronged; he was just being honest.
Zack showed up just in time and, without any fuss, offered a million-dollar settlement. A million bucks was a lot of money for most people. The doctor took the deal happily.
But the hospital staff knew Robert couldn't handle the truth. They had to give vague answers and avoid talking about death. Otherwise, they might end up like that doctor.
If they were lucky, someone would step in and offer a million-dollar settlement. If not, they could get beaten to death, and no amount of money would matter. So everyone steered clear of Robert, not wanting to risk it.
The doctors didn't have a solid reason why Molly hadn't woken up; they just said she needed more interaction.
"Talk to her about real-life stuff," one doctor suggested. "Give her a reason to live, something to hold on to. Don't underestimate the power of will. People can survive without food or water for over a week, all thanks to willpower."
Robert took that seriously. He held Molly's hand and said, "Molly, don't you want to see your mom?"
Molly was having a beautiful dream. In it, her parents were still alive, and she was the cherished daughter of the Koch family. She married Kyle, and Taylor was their healthy, happy kid. Everything was perfect until Robert showed up.
Robert was the nightmare buried deep in Molly's heart; all her pain, hatred, and extreme emotions stemmed from him.
In the dream, she convulsed and screamed in agony. Everyone vanished—Harrison, Leah, Taylor, Kyle—all gone. At that moment, a whisper reached her ear. "Do you want to see them? If you do, wake up."
Molly forced her eyes open, and there was Robert standing by the bed. All the painful memories came rushing back, overwhelming her. She twisted in pain, trembling violently, and through gritted teeth, asked, "Where's Kyle?"
Robert's joy froze at her words. He stared at her gloomily for a long time before speaking, "The first thing you ask for when you wake up is Kyle?"
Molly's frail hand grabbed him fiercely. "Where is he?"
In his anger, he almost told her Kyle was dead. But he changed his words at the last moment, "He hurt his leg a bit and is resting in the ward."
Then, as if afraid Molly wouldn't believe him, he added in a low voice, "When you get better, I'll take you to see him."
The doctor had warned she couldn't handle any shocks. The past few days had changed Robert's mindset a lot. He no longer wanted to torture her to death; he wanted to keep her by his side, not see her die.
Molly stayed quiet for a bit. Since Robert was being civil, she figured it was best not to push his buttons. That wouldn't help either of them.
"Robert, you mentioned my mom, right?" Molly asked, her eyes distant.
Before she left Northfield, Leah had been declared brain-dead by the hospital. Molly had set everything up, left enough money for Leah's care, and then faced her own fate.
When she came back, Leah was buried next to Harrison. Robert had helped with that, and Molly was grateful. But that tiny bit of gratitude couldn't wash away the sea of hatred she felt.
The dream she had was so vivid, so real that Leah seemed alive and right there with her. She couldn't help but wonder if Leah was really dead, or if her ashes were really in that small urn.
Robert thought for a moment and said, "You heard wrong." He didn't want to bring up Leah now; there were more pressing matters.
Molly showed no reaction, just stared blankly at the ceiling. She hadn't expected much, so she could accept that she had misheard.
"I want to see Kyle; I'm worried about him," Molly said.
"He's doing just fine." Robert's anger was clear in his voice. He added, "I have the doctors treating him, and the Scotts are here too."
Molly's fingers curled up, and she asked excitedly, "You informed the Scott family?"
"The Scott family won't harm him anymore. On the contrary, they'll do everything to protect him," Robert said.
Molly didn't get it and looked at him. "What do you mean?"
Robert poured a glass of water, let it cool, and handed it to her, saying, "The Scott family heir died in a car accident recently. He had a five-year-old son who also died. Now, Kyle is the only heir of the Scott family. They've been looking for him all this time."
Molly didn't relax after hearing this, thinking, 'Would someone as ruthless as Rene really care about Kyle? This is only because there is no other son. If another son appears, Kyle will immediately be abandoned. In such a family atmosphere devoid of affection, Kyle couldn't possibly stay.'
Robert seemed to read her thoughts and said calmly, "The Scott family is treating him very well now. They hired the best doctors to treat his hand and leg. There's an overseas project that requires a $200 million investment to benefit from a bone regeneration project. The Scott family invested in it for him."
"As long as Kyle agrees, he can go for surgery. In just six months, his hand and leg will be as good as new," Robert added, "After treatment, he can return to the operating table and even run a marathon. If he wants to, he can be just like before." The last sentence was what Robert really wanted to say, the crucial point.
Molly understood Robert's meaning. He wanted her to persuade Kyle to give up on her and go abroad for treatment. She said calmly, "I won't interfere with Kyle's decision. Whether he chooses to get treated or not, I will respect his decision."
"Do you want him to be a cripple for life because of you?" Robert's words carried a hint of anger. "You probably don't know, but his leg has already bent out of shape. He pretends to walk normally in front of you, but it must be very painful."
Robert sneered. "Molly, are you sure you can bear to let Kyle give up his dreams because of you?"
