Chapter 505 Danger Approaches
Audrey covered her mouth and giggled, "Mom, how can you say that? A little birdie told me something, and I thought I'd be nice and share. Don't go blaming me, I'm totally freaked out. But..."
Audrey paused, pretending to wipe away fake tears, "You just tried to off a pregnant woman with witnesses around."
Abigail was floored. Turned out, Audrey had been putting on a show earlier, and there were witnesses. She was straight-up evil.
Abigail's eyes went red with rage, "Where's Agnes? Give her back now, or I swear, I'll never let you off, even if it kills me!"
Audrey took a sip of water, then said slowly, "Mom, the older you get, the more impatient you become. I told you to take your meds, but you thought I was trying to poison you. Look at you now, all riled up."
With Agnes missing, Abigail was already losing it, and Harper, the mom, was even worse. Since Francis disappeared, Abigail had seen everyone's true colors. Except for Harper, everyone else was just looking to gain something. She regretted being the bad guy who pushed Harper away, which made Francis miserable after losing her.
Even though Harper's fall into the river wasn't Abigail's fault, she still felt guilty. If she hadn't been such a blockhead and had accepted Harper, Francis and Harper would've been happy now.
People only started to regret and felt pain after losing. Now, Abigail just wanted Agnes back safe and sound, no matter the cost.
After calming down a bit, Abigail asked, "Alright, what do you want in return?"
Seeing Abigail totally defeated, Audrey slowly put down her cup and said, "First, you need to drop your false accusations and admit my kid is the only heir of the Getty family."
Abigail was so mad at Audrey's nerve that her hands shook. Audrey, with her messy love life, was pregnant with Jonathan's kid but wanted to pin it on the Getty family. Abigail had never seen such a shameless woman. But now, she had no choice but to agree to keep Agnes safe.
She nodded quickly, "I agree."
Audrey said, "And the samples I left behind, along with Jonathan's samples, I want to see them all destroyed with my own eyes, no trace left."
Abigail replied, "I agree to everything."
Audrey sneered, "Your words aren't enough."
Audrey had Abigail prepare written and video proof as double insurance. After Abigail recorded a statement about the kid, it was immediately posted on the Getty Group's official website. This way, even if Abigail wanted to backtrack, she couldn't. The official website was no joke; any scandal would tank the stock price.
After doing everything, Abigail asked Audrey, "I've done everything. Can I see Agnes now?"
Audrey said slowly, "What's the rush? It's not time yet."
Abigail instantly lost it and snapped, "Audrey, what the hell? I did everything you asked, and you still won't let me see Agnes. If you're playing me, I swear I'll make your life a living nightmare."
Audrey replied, all annoyed, "Chill out. Did I say I was done?"
She handed Abigail a black phone and said, "Follow the instructions on this, and you'll see the kid. But keep your mouth shut, or you might never see Agnes again."
Audrey's smile was cold as ice. Knowing how twisted Audrey could be, Abigail didn't dare mess up.
After leaving the hospital, she bumped into Harper, who'd been waiting outside. Harper grabbed Abigail, desperation all over her face, "Abigail, what did Audrey say? Any news about Agnes?"
Abigail stayed silent. Harper got more and more frantic as time ticked by. The crucial forty-eight hours were slipping away, and still no sign of Agnes. Despite Jasper's protests and the police getting involved, there were no leads.
Since Agnes was taken by Zoey, the cops were treating it as an abduction by someone she knew, focusing on Zoey's circle. Even Zoey's daughter, Jessica, got questioned. Harper couldn't believe Zoey would take Agnes. To Zoey, Agnes was like her own granddaughter. But the cops weren't buying it and had no other leads.
Harper almost dropped to her knees, but Abigail caught her.
Harper choked out, "Abigail, any news about Agnes? Please, tell me."
Abigail hesitated for a long time before stammering, "I don't know..."
Harper couldn't believe it; Abigail didn't look clueless.
Harper cried, "She had a tendency towards autism when she was young. We caught it early, but a sudden change could trigger it again. Please, for the sake of her calling you grandma, tell me."
Tears welled up in Abigail's eyes, and her hands shook. In the end, she steeled herself and pushed Harper away.
"Stop asking me. I really don't know!" Abigail thought for a moment and added, "Instead of crying here, you should wait at home for news. If grief crushes you, who'll take care of Agnes when she comes back?"
With that, Abigail gritted her teeth and walked away.
Harper collapsed, trembling from exhaustion, her face pale as a ghost. She covered her face, tears streaming through her fingers. She knew it was Audrey's people who took Agnes, but she couldn't find any solid clues. She felt like a total failure as a mom.
At that moment, Harper noticed the cops in front of Audrey's room were gone. She was about to rush in and confront Audrey, but the Hernandez family's bodyguards quickly took their place. Along with them were the Getty family's bodyguards.
Harper couldn't get in. She stood at the door, wondering what was going on. She checked the news and saw that Abigail had admitted Audrey was pregnant with Francis's child. Harper thought for a long time; there had to be some connection.
She watched outside the ward for a bit before turning to leave. After leaving the hospital and getting back into her car, Harper saw a missed call and dialed back.
It was Keith, "I can't agree to that because Audrey has made another demand. She said that if I give her shares of the Getty Group, she'll return Agnes to me."
Harper snapped, "Looks like you two aren't on the same page. Come back and talk when you've sorted it out."
Before Keith could finish, Harper hung up. Let those two snakes fight it out themselves!
The driver asked, "Ms. Murphy, where to?"
Harper answered, "Hold on a sec."
Then she dialed a number and said, "Jasper, can you help me track Abigail's location right now?"
Jasper immediately got someone on it, then said, "I've got people on it. By the way, I found a clue. Out of the 184 cars that passed through the intersection next to the one in the footage at that time, one all-black van had fake plates. It's very likely that this van was used to abduct Agnes and Zoey."
Jasper had been up all night, digging into the backgrounds and relationships of over a hundred car owners to find any suspects.
He asked, "Why are you asking about Abigail's whereabouts? Do you suspect her?"
Harper said, "I think she's going to find Agnes."
Jasper's eyebrows furrowed, "Find Agnes?"
Harper said, "I can't explain right now. Just help me track her location. I need to find her."
"Okay, I've sent it over." Jasper sent Abigail's phone location to Harper's phone.
"Wait, I'll go with you," he said.
Harper replied, "I'm going now. Bye."
Harper instructed the driver to follow the location. Soon, she noticed something was off. The location hadn't moved for over ten minutes. Even if there was traffic, it shouldn't be completely stuck on Northfield's roads.
Luckily, it wasn't far. Harper quickly arrived at the destination. She had the driver park in a temporary spot and got out to search. After looking around, she couldn't find any trace of a car.
Harper tried calling, but there was no answer. Finally, after walking around a few times, she heard a vibration coming from a trash can. Ignoring the filth, she dug through the trash and found the phone Abigail had ditched.
Back in the car, Harper called Jasper again and said, "Jasper, you don't need to come. Abigail isn't here."
Jasper, already on the road, was puzzled, "What?"
Harper replied, "She threw her phone in the trash."
Hearing this, Jasper, who had been skeptical, became alert.
Harper asked, "Can you track a license plate number?"
"Yeah."
Harper gave him a license plate number.
Luckily, she had seen Abigail get into a taxi when she was back in the hospital. At the time, she didn't think it was strange that Abigail was taking a taxi. She had only glanced at the license plate, but her good memory allowed her to recall it.
In the car, Harper anxiously waited for Jasper to track the license plate. Soon, the location came through, and this time, the tiny dot indicated movement.
Harper immediately had the driver follow the signal. The car was heading to a place that wasn't remote, with traffic along the way.
Harper felt uneasy, her eyelids twitching rapidly, a foreboding sign.
Finally, the car stopped at a city park. After registering, Harper's car also drove in.
The park was vast, with roads, camping areas, and walking paths. Harper got out where the vehicle signal stopped. She walked towards the wetland area, feeling her legs go weak after a few steps.
Not far ahead, Abigail was holding a child, and it was Agnes!
"Agnes!" Harper ran over, crying, and hugged Agnes tightly, tears streaming down. "Agnes, you're finally back with me."
But Agnes couldn't respond. Her face was unnaturally flushed, as if she had been drugged.
Harper anxiously checked Agnes but couldn't find anything unusual. She needed to take her to the hospital, but there was something important to do first!
Harper looked up at Abigail and asked, "Abigail, is there anyone else with Agnes? Zoey, who was taking care of her, is also missing."
Abigail shook her head, her eyes fixed on Agnes without relaxing for a moment.
"Abigail, where did you find Agnes? I want to take a look," Harper said.
Abigail pointed to a tree by the river and told Harper, "Agnes was sleeping under that tree."
Abigail had followed the phone instructions all the way, expecting Audrey to play some trick, but she found Agnes easily.
Harper wasn't concerned about how Abigail found Agnes; that could be dealt with later. The priority was checking Agnes's health and finding Zoey.
At that moment, Harper's phone rang. It was Jasper. Seeing Harper was busy, Abigail reached out and said, "Let me hold Agnes."
Harper hesitated, seeing the loving look in Abigail's eyes, and handed Agnes to her. She walked a few steps away to answer the call and heard Jasper say, "Harper, Zoey's found!"
Harper asked, "Really?"
Jasper replied, "She was found unconscious on the road and taken to the hospital by a passerby."
Harper couldn't believe it. She had always been sure Audrey was behind this. But would Audrey go to such lengths to kidnap just to force Abigail to withdraw her accusations and give her unborn child an identity? It seemed too simple. Audrey didn't seem like the kind of woman who would keep her word just because Abigail agreed to her terms.
Harper couldn't figure it out and decided not to dwell on it. The priority was taking Agnes for a check-up.
Harper told Jasper they had found Agnes, and he was relieved.
After hanging up, Harper turned to see Abigail looking lovingly at Agnes, her affection evident. Harper felt touched. She thought maybe she should explain Abigail's identity to Agnes. If Agnes wanted to interact with Abigail, she wouldn't stop her.
Harper finally smiled for the first time in two days and walked towards Abigail. Just as she was about to speak after taking Agnes back, a roaring engine sound erupted. Harper and Abigail turned to the right simultaneously.
A black car was speeding towards them!
"Run!" Abigail, with unexpected strength, suddenly shouted and pushed Harper hard.
