Chapter 392 She Was No Pushover
Audrey's face was all high and mighty, like she was already Francis's wife or something.
If Harper didn't know better, she might've bought into her act.
Harper just ignored her and went for the door, but Audrey stepped in her way.
Audrey's eyes flashed cold as she said, "You should go back. Francis has me, his fiancée, to take care of him. You can just leave."
Harper looked at Audrey's smug face and couldn't help but find it funny.
She thought Audrey might be tougher than Chloe, but turned out, she wasn't much better.
Both of them could lie without batting an eye, but Harper wasn't about to waste her breath on her.
She was just there to check if Francis was okay and then bounce.
After all, he had passed out at her place, and she wouldn't feel right if something happened to him.
Harper couldn't be bothered to call out her lies and said coldly, "Move aside."
"Have you no shame?" Audrey's cool facade cracked, and she sneered, "Why can't you just learn to not be the other woman?"
Audrey had tangled with Harper a few times and knew she hated being called the other woman.
So she thought she could use that to make her back off.
But Harper's face stayed calm, and she even smiled a bit, "Ms. Hernandez, you call yourself his fiancée, but has Francis ever said that?"
Audrey's eyes flickered, and she snapped, "Of course he has. Everyone knows we're a couple. Don't try to stir up trouble."
Harper's eyes turned icy. "I really didn't know. Why don't we go in and ask him now?"
Harper looked at her calmly and said, "Ms. Hernandez, you game?"
"I!" Audrey's face froze, too mad to speak.
Harper's hand was on the doorknob as she asked coolly, "Ms. Hernandez, you coming in? If not, I am."
"Don't." Audrey's face twisted, and she shouted, all worked up.
Harper looked at her with a mocking smile on her pretty face.
At that moment, Audrey realized she'd been played!
Audrey's actions basically admitted that the fiancée title was all in her head.
Audrey was furious and snapped, "You played me?"
To her, Harper was nothing, yet she dared to mess with her!
Harper's voice dropped to a freezing point as she said nonchalantly, "So, Ms. Hernandez, why can't you learn to not be a liar?"
Audrey's face twisted in extreme anger. She thought, 'How dare Harper insult me!'
Her face went from twisted to calm in a flash.
Audrey put on a fake smile and said bluntly, "I know, Francis told you we were just pretending, right?"
Harper didn't speak, unsure of Audrey's game.
Audrey smiled gracefully and said, "You don't know why we're pretending to be a couple, do you? It's because Ryan wants to strip Francis of his power. To avoid getting kicked out of the company, he teamed up with me."
Harper's face stayed indifferent. "I know."
Audrey's hand at her side clenched tight, filled with hate.
Francis had told her everything! But there was one thing he didn't know because he wasn't aware of it.
Audrey relaxed her face and smiled, "Do you know why Ryan wants to strip Francis of his power?"
This was something Harper couldn't figure out either.
Ryan didn't seem like Francis's dad but more like someone who used him as a tool.
Before Harper could get a word in, Audrey kept going with a smug smile, "Francis marrying you really ticked Ryan off. One thing led to another. Francis was too independent, so Ryan wanted to ditch him and back Francis's half-brother as the heir."
"What?" Harper blurted out, totally shocked.
Francis had a half-brother? That meant there was an illegitimate kid in the mix!
Audrey finally felt like she had the upper hand and said all high and mighty, "So, I can assure you, we will get married because he needs me."
Saying that, Audrey felt a wave of relief.
Harper had neither money nor power. Her dream of being with Francis was a joke!
Audrey scoffed, "Abigail's coming over soon. I suggest you leave now; Abigail probably wouldn't be thrilled to see you."
Harper's hand on the doorknob hesitated. In her rush, she had forgotten about all these unpleasant people and things.
Thinking of Abigail, Ryan, and the past, Harper slowly let go of the doorknob.
What would change by opening this door and taking a look?
Could she and Francis have a shot? The answer was no.
Harper just wanted a peaceful life, and Francis's presence always messed that up.
She couldn't let herself fall into a miserable situation again. It was better to cut it off early, as long as she knew he was okay.
Audrey looked at Harper's pretty face, fighting the urge to scratch it, and warned, "Don't bother Francis again. You won't have a future together."
Harper looked at Audrey, not a hint of sadness on her face, and said calmly, "Then I wish you get what you want. Just don't end up with nothing."
With that, Harper turned around.
Audrey's smile froze, and she angrily called out, "Stop! What do you mean?"
"Ms. Hernandez, you don't get it?" Harper smirked, "You must know that Francis only needs the Hernandez family, right?"
Audrey sighed in relief; she had thought Harper was going to drop some bombshell.
Of course, Audrey knew Francis needed the Hernandez family, not her.
But so what? It still meant she could marry him.
Audrey said arrogantly, "The Hernandez family is mine. What's the difference?"
"It's a big difference," Harper smiled, "There are plenty of families in Northfield more powerful than the Hernandez family."
With that, Harper turned and left.
If Audrey couldn't get what she was saying, it only proved she was too dumb.
Harper didn't skip going into Francis's ward because of Audrey's lies.
She just didn't want to give Francis any false hope anymore.
Audrey was just trying to hit Harper where it hurt to bully her. But if she didn't care, Audrey would just look like a fool.
Just because she didn't want Francis didn't mean anyone could push her around.
Behind her.
Audrey watched Harper's back, her sense of victory completely gone.
How could she not understand?
Harper was saying that Francis had other powerful families to team up with and might ditch her.
Audrey knew this very well, which was why she kept Abigail firmly in her corner as her backup.
But what ticked her off more was that Harper didn't care at all who Francis married.
Audrey had stuck by Francis's side for years, knowing how deeply he loved Harper. It was to the point where he didn't care about his own life.
And what she couldn't even dream of, Harper didn't care about at all.
Audrey's expression turned pathologically twisted.
Harper didn't deserve Francis's love!
After a while, she turned, suppressed the overwhelming hatred in her eyes, and opened the door. "Francis,"
