Chapter 498 He Chose to Die in Her Place
Victor's eyes were all puffy and red from bawling his eyes out. He reached out to steady Harper, his voice all raspy, "Ms. Murphy, Mr. Getty told me to get you home safe."
Harper yanked her hand away, her lips quivering, "Save him. Save him, Victor!"
The long silence just shattered her.
"Why aren't you saving him? Didn't you already stop the bomb's timer? The numbers aren't moving." Harper's voice was all cracked and desperate, "You, you save him."
Victor was already a mess, tears streaming down his face, "Ms. Murphy, there's no plan. No plan at all."
His words ripped Harper's heart wide open. She screamed and charged forward like a madwoman.
Victor grabbed Harper tight, sobbing uncontrollably, "Mr. Getty, he knew the consequence. This was his choice."
Harper's whole body shook, the unbearable pain spreading from her heart to every inch of her body. Turned out, there was never any plan; Francis chose to die in her place.
Francis's words echoed in her mind, "You will tell Agnes yourself that you love her." "No, I will make sure you live."
From start to finish, Francis never said he would leave with her.
Harper's heart felt like it had been ripped out, the pain was unbearable.
Suddenly, Victor's phone buzzed. He gasped, "It's Mr. Getty."
Victor put it on speaker, Harper's hands shaking as she cried and laughed into the phone, "Francis, stop joking, okay? You promised me."
Her voice was shaky, but she tried her best to speak clearly, making sure Francis could hear her.
"You said you wouldn't leave." She clenched her fists, holding back her tears, "You said so, Francis."
"Harper." Amidst the noisy wind, Francis's voice was calm and clear, piercing her eardrums, "I'm sorry."
"I guess I have to break my word," he said.
"No." Harper's voice trembled as she shouted, "No, Francis, I said no. Do you hear me? I said no!"
Harper had never lost her mind like this before, using her shouts to cover her fear. She couldn't and wouldn't believe she would lose Francis.
She added, "No, Francis, I beg you, no, Agnes... Agnes can't lose her father again. I beg you, please!"
No matter how Harper pleaded, Francis could only respond with, "I'm sorry."
Harper felt like she was going insane. "Francis, I'm coming to save you. Wait for me. I'm coming to save you."
She didn't wait for his response, grabbed the phone, rushed to the car, pulled the driver out and then slammed the door to start the car.
Then there was a loud boom. The massive explosion made the car and the ground tremble.
Harper's mouth opened wide, her eardrums felt like they had burst, and she couldn't hear anything for a long time. She slowly raised her eyes and saw a huge plume of smoke rising ahead.
The surroundings were deathly silent. The residual smell of explosives seeped in through the car window, bit by bit, and was clearly telling Harper what had happened.
As the tremors died down, Harper let out this gut-wrenching wail from deep inside her chest! She screamed in agony, her head banging against the steering wheel uncontrollably.
"Ms. Murphy!" Victor frantically turned off the engine.
Victor was shaking too; he couldn't believe it either. But he remembered Francis's instructions.
Harper's voice was so hoarse it was barely a whisper, "Take me to..."
She was trembling all over, barely able to breathe, let alone drive. The pain in her heart was ripping her apart.
Victor got it, helped Harper to the back seat, and drove forward.
Less than 3 miles away was the ocean's edge. Harper's eyes were glued to the pitch-black sea.
Harper opened the car door, her legs giving out before she even got out, and she collapsed to the ground.
"Ms. Murphy." Victor hurriedly helped her up.
Harper shook off his hand, stumbling towards the black smoke. Victor stayed close, and when he watched her step into the water, he quickly stopped her. He said, "Ms. Murphy, stop here."
Harper's voice was so hoarse it sounded like it was filled with smoke as she wailed, "Why? WHY?"
Victor's body trembled. He barely held back his emotions, choking out, "The design of that bomb was such that it would explode as soon as you left the driver's seat. The safety team calculated many methods, but only one was feasible, which required a roughly equivalent weight replacement. But with only five minutes left, there was no way to use external tools."
Victor finally couldn't hold back his emotions, crying out, "Mr. Getty said cutting the countdown meant he chose to replace you."
To save her, Francis traded his life for hers.
Harper stood there, rooted to the spot, staring at the sea blackened by the explosion. Suddenly, she said, "Is he in the water?"
Immediately, Harper began to struggle to swim over, but Victor held her tightly.
Victor said, "Ms. Murphy, please! You can't waste Mr. Getty's efforts!"
Harper cried out, "Victor, believe me, he's alive, he's really alive. He promised me he wouldn't leave me. Why do you give up? Please, save him. It's too cold in the water."
Harper's tears flowed again, big drops falling into the icy sea. She murmured almost obsessively, "I don't want him lying in the water. it's too cold. I don't want him lying in the water."
Victor cried so hard he couldn't open his eyes. How could he rest there? With such a massive explosion, anyone in the car would be reduced to ashes.
Harper obsessively walked into the deep sea, wailing, "Francis, let's go home."
The next second, she suddenly fell into the icy water.
"Ms. Murphy!" Victor screamed, diving in to grab her. Then, he held her tightly and swam back to shore.
Back in the car, Harper's body was cold and numb from the seawater. In her unconsciousness, she tightly clutched the coat Francis had left in the car, murmuring softly, "Francis, come back, please."
