Chapter 445: Does It Have Anything to Do With You?
Molly crashed until almost nine, totally wiped out and needing some serious shut-eye. When she finally woke up and realized she was late, she scrambled to wash up and open the door. The chair she had jammed against it last night was still there, untouched.
She swung the door open, her mind racing about how crazy things had been yesterday. If Robert didn't let her go, what was her escape plan?
But the hallway was dead quiet.
Weird, she thought. By nine, the villa was usually buzzing. Robert had meds to take four times a day, and this was usually when the staff would be running around like headless chickens.
But today? Not a peep. Not even from Zack.
Just as she was about to head downstairs, Molly overheard two kitchen maids gossiping.
"What's up with Mr. Perot? I heard some ruckus last night, like he got rushed to the hospital?"
"I saw it. He was drowning in the tub, and Mr. Jones pulled him out. You wouldn't believe it; his face was ghost-white, like he was dead. It was freaky."
"Mr. Jones did CPR for like half an hour before Mr. Perot showed any signs of life. They were worried he might have brain damage from the lack of oxygen, so they took him to a big hospital."
Molly was floored. Robert couldn't get out of the tub last night. No wonder it was so quiet when she left. He must've passed out when she fought back.
Just then, the maids started chatting again.
"I think this Ms. Koch that Mr. Perot brought back is bad news. Ever since she showed up, Mr. Perot's been getting worse. He barely recovers before something else happens. Now he's almost drowned. It's just too weird."
"Yeah, if Mr. Jones hadn't found him, Mr. Perot might've died."
"Such bad luck..."
Their voices trailed off.
Molly stood there, stunned. Was it true Robert almost died yesterday? She thought she'd be thrilled, but instead, she felt a weird chill. When she heard he almost drowned, she even shivered for a moment.
She told herself she wanted him dead more than anyone. But an accidental death? That wasn't what she had in mind.
Robert wasn't scared of dying. She wanted him to realize his mistakes, repent, and rot in prison for the rest of his life. For someone as arrogant as him, that would be worse than death.
In a daze, she found herself at Robert's door. No sound inside.
Robert had a ton of enemies, so most of the bodyguards must've gone to the hospital. She impulsively reached out to push the door, and it wasn't locked.
Robert's room was off-limits to her except when she was taking care of him. After being here for so long, Molly knew this was Robert's forbidden zone, a place where he spent most of his time. With top-notch security, it was tough for outsiders to get in.
Since it was forbidden, there had to be some important stuff hidden in there. Molly remembered there was a hidden compartment by Robert's bedside.
She walked in, gently closed the door, and felt around the bedside from memory. Finally, she found a hidden button, like a switch. She pressed it, and the entire bed slid sideways, revealing a large hidden room.
Molly's eyes immediately locked onto a golden cabinet, and she felt a rush of excitement. But as she got closer, she saw it was locked with a retinal scanner. Only Robert could open it.
She felt a wave of disappointment and was about to bounce when a glass cabinet caught her eye. It was packed with stuff related to her.
There were her graduation projects, photos, a scarf she had knitted for Robert, a lunchbox she used to bring him food, and a bunch of other things. Some items she had to squint at to remember she had given them to him. Everything was perfectly preserved in the glass cabinet, which was spotless, meaning someone had been carefully maintaining it.
In such a secret space, no one else would come in, which meant Robert himself had been doing it. For a split second, her heart felt a tug.
Molly remembered that they had once had good times together. Robert had been good to her. They had fallen in love in a bright summer, walked hand in hand through the autumn leaves, and huddled together for warmth in Lenora's winter.
But one day, everything suddenly flipped. Life had turned Robert into a monster. He knew all her likes and dislikes and stomped her on the things she hated.
And now, she was just like him, her mind consumed and corroded by hatred. Finally, he had succeeded in turning her into a monster too.
They were the same kind; she could no longer live a normal life. Those simple days she had once longed for were now out of reach.
Molly was lost in her thoughts, tears streaming down her face, when suddenly she heard footsteps and a servant's voice outside the door.
"Mr. Jones, you're back."
"Yeah." Zack's steady voice replied.
Molly panicked, hurriedly came out of the hidden room, and closed it.
The next second, the door swung open.
Zack saw Molly in the room, and his expression changed instantly. He sternly asked, "Who let you in here?"
Molly turned and said calmly, "Who do you think? Robert said I should come at this time to give him his meds."
Zack remained silent, his sharp eyes scrutinizing Molly.
Molly didn't flinch, meeting his gaze calmly. "Where's Robert?"
Zack coldly mocked, "Don't you know?"
"Know what? Where did he go?" Molly decided to play dumb.
If she hadn't overheard the maids' conversation, she truly wouldn't have known. To avoid trouble, she certainly wouldn't admit her knowledge of Robert's condition. Moreover, she guessed that Zack didn't know Robert's near-drowning was related to her. Otherwise, with Zack's loyalty, he would have locked her up in the dungeon by now.
Zack's face was stone-cold as he said, "Why, are you concerned about Mr. Perot now?"
Molly understood his sarcasm and didn't bother to respond. She turned and said, "Keep it to yourself if you want."
This behavior was typical of Molly, making Zack less suspicious.
As she was leaving, Zack called out to her, "Did Mr. Perot's incident in the bathtub last night have anything to do with you?"
Molly sneered, "You all don't understand the law, and you think I don't either? I'm not stupid enough to kill him and ruin the rest of my life."
She hadn't done it on purpose. Robert had choked her first, and she was only fighting back. Who would have thought he was so weak that he would pass out in the bathtub and almost drown himself?
Zack had come back to get medication and didn't want to talk to Molly any longer. He coldly said, "If you have any heart, go to the hospital and see Mr. Perot. He hasn't woken up yet."
