Chapter 76 It's Over

The doctor said, "The latest examination report shows that your grandma is in bad health. To be frank, she may pass away at any time. Therefore, staying in the hospital is meaningless. You can consider taking her back home and try to fulfill her last wishes"

Harper walked out of the doctor's office, feeling depressed. Her legs went weak, so she found a bench to sit down.

Caregiver noticed Harper and Harper’s pale face. She quickly approached Harper and asked, "Harper, what's wrong with you?"

Harper was speechless. She took out her phone, her hand trembling so much that she didn’t even have the strength to press the buttons.

Trembling, Harper said, "Caregiver, please help me. Help me make a call. Dial the '1' key."

The '1' key was set as a quick way to call Francis as he was an important person to Harper.

Caregiver was startled by Harper’s condition. She took the phone and pressed the '1' key for Harper. It rang for a long time, but no one answered the call.

The caregiver dialed it again, but there was still no answer. She looked at Harper and asked, in a soft voice, "Should I keep trying?"

"Yes," Harper said.

Harper was incredibly stubborn at the moment.

Harper felt weak all over. She needed Francis to give her a little encouragement and help to fulfill her grandma's last wish.

At the end of the third attempt, the call finally connected.

A tired and impatient voice sounded from the other side of the phone, "What's up?"

But at this moment, Harper had no time to think about what happened to Francis.

She sobbed, "Francis, can you come back? My grandma is... "

Suddenly, the gentle voice of a woman sounded from the other side of the phone and interrupted Harper.

"Francis..."

In an instant, Harper's heart sank.

Harper thought she had misheard, so she asked in disbelief, "Are you with Chloe?"

"Yes, Chloe..." Francis began to explain.

"Francis!" Harper couldn't believe it, her voice trembling. She continued again, "It's nighttime there. Are you together?"

Frowning, Francis looked at Chloe, who was lying on the hospital bed listlessly, and said lightly, "It's not what you think. I'll explain to you when I get back."

A low sobbing sound then came from the other side. Francis covered the phone and gently said something to comfort Chloe.

It caused Harper a great deal of heartache. So strong was the pain that Harper could hardly speak for a moment.

Tears fell silently, flowing into her mouth, bitter and salty...
But Harper still didn't want to disappoint her grandma. She choked and asked again, "Francis, can you come back right now... Please! Can you come back now?"

Francis’ heart skipped a beat. Harper had always been strong, rarely begging others like this, especially not in such a humble manner. His heart immediately softened.

"I will come back soon. Just wait for me at home."

"No, Francis, come back now, my grandma—"

"Harper."

Harper was interrupted by Francis before she could finish her words. Chloe was crying in pain. Francis thought that Harper urged him to go back only because she was unhappy about him being with Chloe.

Therefore, Francis gave more priority to Chloe's matter as Chloe was in a bad state at the moment. He couldn’t leave Chloe alone overseas.

"Be rational. Chloe is in critical condition. I can't come back now."

Realizing his tone was too stern, Francis softened his tone a little and added, "After Chloe gets through the dangerous period, I will spend more time with you."

Francis’ words almost instantly shattered all of Harper's hopes for him.

Harper thought, ‘How ridiculous!

‘He actually thinks that I am irrational and I’m competing for attention.’

The heartache grew stronger...

Harper smiled bitterly with tears in her eyes. "Francis, my grandma is not important to you, and neither am I, right?"

Harper thought in anger, ‘And that is why you can make such a decision without any hesitation.’

Francis couldn't stand Harper’s unreasonable behavior and said coldly, "Harper, you don’t have to stir up a fight by saying those words at all, do you?"

Harper was heartbroken in an instant as if an invisible hand was going to tear her heart apart.

So strong was the agony that Harper was almost unable to stand up straight.

Harper wanted to hang up the phone immediately.

But Harper didn't want her grandma to have any regrets.

Harper pleaded almost in a humble manner. "Francis, I'm not trying to pick a fight with you. My grandma is really in bad health now, and she really wants to see you."

Francis furrowed his brow. Through the phone, he couldn't see Harper's helplessness. He just patiently reassured her. "I promise to visit your grandma. I won't break my word. Just be good and wait for me to come back."

Harper bit her lip to prevent herself from crying.
Harper cried out almost desperately, "Francis, I'm not trying to trick you back. Everything I said is true. Why don't you believe me?"

"It’s not that I don’t believe you, but Chloe isn't doing well. She had a relapse yesterday. I can't leave her here alone. I absolutely won't leave her alone overseas." Francis’ determined attitude made Harper desperate.

Sure enough, Harper had once again overestimated herself.
To Francis, Chloe was everything.

Harper was sure that Francis didn’t care about at all whether her grandma was sick or not.
Harper, once again, had misplaced her trust in Francis.
"Francis, have you ever considered that maybe she's just using her illness to keep you by her side?"

"Stop talking nonsense, Harper! How could Chloe be so foolish to do that at the expense of her health?"

"It is foolish indeed, but she does it because you believe her. She keeps using this excuse to have you stay with her! Haven't you ever wondered why she only falls ill in front of you but not others?" shouted Harper in a hoarse voice.

Francis, however, disagreed with that. "That's just a coincidence."
Harper sneered. "Is it really just a coincidence? Francis, I don’t think that there would be such a lot of coincidences."

On the other end of the phone, Francis could sense that something was off with Harper's emotions.

Francis rubbed his temples and said, "I promise you, once Chloe's condition stabilizes a bit, I'll fly back to see your grandma."

Harper looked red in the eyes, looking extremely tired. Her heart seemed to have been overwhelmed with disappointment and coldness at the moment. "Francis, you clearly said before that I was your priority."

Harper thought to herself, ‘You clearly spoke those words with intention.
‘Why are you breaking your promise now?
‘Why do you break my heart?’

Francis’ voice turned cold. "I did say that, but it also depends on the severity of the situation. Now, Chloe's life is hanging by a thread. Are you asking me to ignore her safety?"

Harper gave a bitter smile. "Francis, whether she lives or dies, has nothing to do with you. She does all this because only you would believe her. And if her life really hung by a thread, why hasn't her family gone to see her so far? Have you ever considered that all of this is just her scheme?"

"Her family is already on their way."
Francis’ voice was cold and even a bit stern. "Harper, you've always been kind, but why are you so malicious now?"

Harper’s heart seemed to have been shattered into pieces after she heard that.
She felt frustrated and desperate.

Harper’s eyes turned red. She smiled through tears, saying, "Francis, it's my fault for not being kind enough. You should stay with your kind first love forever. We…" Harper paused.
"We are over."
