Chapter 495 Enjoy Your Last Thirty Minutes
Chloe's brain felt like it was getting jabbed by a million needles, but she just couldn't wrap her head around it.
Harper threw out a wild guess, "Did Audrey send that dude to save you?"
Chloe's face was a mix of shock and confusion. She hadn't really dealt with Audrey directly. But she knew the guy who saved her was Audrey's bodyguard, Jonathan. And Jonathan was the masked dude who gave her the meds in the alley.
Harper caught on quick and said, "It was Audrey, right? She wasn't saving you; she wanted to screw me over and pin it on you, maybe even get you killed."
Chloe snapped back, "That's BS. You're just trying to mess with my head."
Chloe didn't have any beef with Audrey. Even though Audrey used to be Francis's fiancée, she was always super nice to Chloe. Back then, Chloe couldn't even get close to Francis, and Audrey actually helped her out in business.
Harper pressed on, "Why would Audrey take such a big risk to save you? Think about it. What's her angle?"
Harper's voice turned icy, "You heard what those guys said. She wants to frame you. She's smart enough to stay in the shadows and let others do her dirty work."
Chloe was thrown off for a second, Harper's words kinda made sense.
But Harper wasn't trying to reason with her; she was buying time. She knew better than to argue with a nutcase who could snap any second. Chloe had already offed two people; what's one more to her?
Harper edged towards the door. While Chloe was distracted, she bolted. She grabbed the door from outside and jammed a wooden stick she found into the handle.
Chloe snapped out of it and started banging on the door.
Harper knew she had only a few seconds. She turned and saw a black SUV parked outside. She yanked the door open, rummaged around, and finally found the keys in the glove compartment.
As soon as she turned the key, she heard a loud crash. Chloe had busted through the door! She was raging and charged at the SUV.
Harper saw the gear shift and realized it was a manual. She hadn't driven stick in ages. Relying on muscle memory, she started the car, hit the clutch and brake, shifted gears, and released the handbrake.
But the car started shaking like crazy.
Harper knew she messed up. She forced herself to chill and realized she hit the wrong pedal. Once she let go of the brake, the car finally started moving.
Then, there was a loud thud from above.
Chloe couldn't get the door open, so she climbed onto the roof. Luckily, the sunroof was closed. But that relief was short-lived. Chloe, now armed with a brick, started smashing the sunroof. Her eyes were wild, and she looked like she was on a rampage. Right then, Chloe was more monster than human.
Before Harper could react, the car's central control screen lit up on its own. A creepy laugh filled the car, sending shivers down her spine.
Harper looked around and saw no one else in the car except Chloe on the roof. Then, a voice came through the speakers, "Hello there."
Even though the voice was altered, Harper could tell it wasn't anyone from Dreamlandia.
"Why so quiet? Scared, huh?" the creepy voice taunted.
Harper kept her cool, "Who are you? Who sent you?"
The voice just laughed, "I want the same thing as the one who wants you dead. But her way is too boring. So, I spiced it up a bit."
Harper yelled, "What the hell do you mean?"
The voice drawled, "I rigged this car with enough explosives to level a building."
Harper's heart pounded. Her first instinct was to stop the car. But the voice seemed to read her mind and chuckled, "Just a heads-up. If you get off that seat, boom! Instant fireworks."
Harper's legs locked up, and she screamed, "You're insane! This is murder. It's illegal!"
"Illegal?" The voice laughed like it was the funniest thing ever, "You think you'll live long enough to catch me?"
Harper demanded, "Who are you?"
"Here's a clue," the voice said, "You're my failure, and I want to correct it myself."
Harper thought fast, "You're the one who pushed my car off the bridge, aren't you?"
"Smart girl!" the voice praised, "Too bad, it's the end for a clever beauty like you."
Harper bit her lip, "Why? Did Audrey send you?"
"Last time, yeah, but not this time." The voice sneered, "That's why her plan is so dull, making your death so boring."
Harper couldn't believe Audrey had been holding a grudge for so long. Back then, they barely interacted. Audrey always seemed so innocent and carefree around Harper. But behind the scenes, she was plotting her demise.
"Are you from the Charles family?" Harper asked.
"Enough." The voice lost interest, "Enjoy your last thirty minutes."
The connection cut off. A countdown appeared on the screen. Seconds ticked away.
Harper didn't know if she should believe it, but she couldn't risk it.
Suddenly, there was a loud crash. Chloe had smashed a window, and glass shards rained down. Harper felt a sharp pain in her neck, probably cut and bleeding. But she couldn't relax, gripping the steering wheel tightly.
Chloe, crazed, was pounding on the sunroof, trying to get in. Harper was overwhelmed, holding the wheel and driving forward.
Soon, Chloe broke through the window, half her body inside. She grabbed Harper's hair and snarled, "Bitch, let's see where you run now!"
Harper was yanked, and the car's alarm blared. Harper screamed, "Chloe, let go! There's a bomb in the car!"
Chloe paused but didn't let go, skeptical. "You're lying to me again?"
"I'm not lying." Harper's neck and forehead were drenched in sweat. She was fighting to survive, but fate seemed to be mocking her.
At that moment, Harper felt not just exhausted but utterly hopeless. What could she do? Would she never see Agnes and the others again?
Just as Harper was losing hope, a black limo appeared beside her, driving alongside. Harper saw the familiar license plate in the rearview mirror. Tears welled up in her eyes.
But Chloe, seeing that car, went berserk. She fell into the back seat and then fiercely grabbed Harper's neck, shouting, "Perfect timing. Let's all go to hell."
