Chapter 513 Innocently Adorable
Robert spoke slow, like he always did when he wanted to scare the crap outta someone.
Molly pursed her lips, "Robert, I was the one who ordered Kyle. Now that you're out, if you got beef, take it out on me!"
Just then, a waiter knocked and brought in some oatmeal and other grub.
Robert's face was stone cold, "Sit down and eat."
Molly thought Robert must be nuts. Were they really gonna sit down and chow together? Plus, with Kyle missing, how could she even think about eating?
The worry in Molly's eyes was clear. She shot back, "Robert, I wanna see Kyle."
Before, Molly wouldn't dare bring up Kyle around Robert, 'cause he could flip out any second. But now, Robert was weirdly patient, not even twitching, and said softly, "Eat first, then we'll talk. Don't you know you got a bad stomach?"
The more he acted like this, the more it freaked her out. Molly gritted her teeth, her anger boiling, "I'm not eating, I'm not hungry. Robert, you said if I came, I could see Kyle."
Hearing Kyle's name again, Robert's calm cracked a bit. But he just tapped the table with his knuckles and said coldly, "I'll say it one last time, eat, or else..."
Robert got up and walked over to Molly, towering over her, "I don't mind feeding you myself."
"If I eat, will you let me see Kyle?" Molly took a step back, eyeing him suspiciously, "Robert, can you keep your word?"
Robert laughed, pissed off, "Do I have no credibility in your eyes?"
"None," Molly shot back, dead serious. Robert always talked based on his mood.
"Molly, shouldn't you have a bit of conscience, huh?" Robert easily grabbed her chin, looking her over, then chuckled, "At least I'm not like you, trying to poison me while feeding me, saying sweet things one moment and stabbing me in the back the next."
He was talking about that time Molly took care of him with hidden motives after he got stabbed. Yeah, Robert was sharp, knowing Molly had thought of a hundred ways to off him while playing nurse.
Molly hated this move; grabbing someone's chin was either out of hate or too much intimacy. She stepped back, walked to the table, and downed a bowl of oatmeal while standing.
After a day of hunger and too much booze, the warm oatmeal felt good on her stomach. Molly's face got some color back. She finished one bowl and lifted the lid to serve another, planning to finish the whole pot.
Just as she brought it to her mouth, Robert stopped her. "Stop eating."
His tone was harsh as he took the bowl, "Your stomach's small; you can't eat too much at once."
It wasn't shocking that Robert knew about her stomach surgery. What was shocking was his almost caring tone. Logically, he should be dying to rip her apart right now.
Molly's unease wouldn't go away. What could make Robert so calm? But that anxiety didn't stick around long; the reason hit her like a ton of bricks.
Robert said, "Now that you're full, how about some after-dinner entertainment?"
Seeing Robert's shady smile, Molly's unease spiked.
The curtain in the hall suddenly lifted. Behind it was a high-def glass, showing everything inside.
Molly saw Kyle, who'd been MIA for a day and a night. He was curled up in a corner, chained with a thick, long iron chain. His clothes were shredded, stained with blood, barely hanging on. His leg bones were so messed up that the white bones at his knees were showing.
Despite his condition, the torture wasn't over. A shirtless bodyguard in black kept swinging a chain. The sound of the whip was clear and piercing.
Molly's ears buzzed, and the world was filled with that harsh sound. Her lips trembled, and she stuttered, "Robert, let him go. He has nothing to do with this. Let him go!"
Molly grabbed his sleeve, her weight falling on the demon-like Robert, screaming. "Let him go! Robert! Let him go!"
Her eyes were bloodshot, her voice hoarse, yet she kept pleading.
Robert's handsome face was cold, unmoved by Molly's pleas. "Molly, I spoiled you too much before. It's time for you to grow up." He smiled coldly, chillingly. "You need to understand that not all regrets come with a chance for redemption, and not all betrayals will give you another chance."
Molly's pupils contracted, her face turning pale. The Robert before her was like a cold snake, finally showing his venom.
But this was the real Robert! Not the same guy praised by those in the courtroom.
"Robert, what gives you the right to beat someone? This is illegal, you..." Molly was cut off by laughter.
"Molly, you're so naively adorable." Robert pulled Molly tightly into his arms, immobilizing her. His eyes were as cold as a snake's, ready to devour her. "I'm now a law-abiding citizen, praised by everyone. Do you think I would do something illegal?"
Molly struggled, almost puking, her face turning red. "Robert, a good citizen? You? You're a demon. Your act is disgusting!"
"Do you find it disgusting?" Robert yanked Molly's hair, forcing her to look up, then whispered coldly in her ear, "I tried being a good person for you, but after you came back, I realized being good is boring, utterly boring."
Whether he was good or not, Molly would never forgive him. So why should he be good?
Being good would mean letting Molly live the life she wanted and silently blessing her. Dream on! In Robert's world, there was no such thing as granting someone's wishes.
"Let him go, you lunatic. You'll kill him if you keep beating him!" Molly didn't give in, despite the pain in her scalp, fighting back with all her might, kicking and punching, using every method she could think of. But it was all for nothing; she couldn't hurt Robert at all.
Robert dragged her to the glass, holding her from behind, forcing her to look inside. "Do you know who took Kyle last night?"
Molly stayed silent, and Robert continued, "It was Rene Scott."
Molly's eyes widened in shock. How could it be Rene?
Robert said, "Rene got word from the Mitchell family that I would be fine this time, so he thought of sending Kyle abroad for safety. But after Kyle was brought back, he refused to leave, insisting on staying."
"Why do you think he wouldn't leave?" Robert asked coldly, looking at Molly's reflection in the glass.
Molly knew why Kyle wouldn't leave—it was because of her. Kyle had said he would never abandon her, and he meant it.
Robert couldn't stand the understanding look on Molly's face, the mutual understanding between Kyle and her made him jealous. He laughed coldly, "If he had escaped, I might have spared the Scott family. But he thought he was so great, trying to be someone else's guardian angel."
He pinched Molly's chin, pointing at Kyle inside, making her see clearly. "That's a Scott family member, understand?"
Robert sneered, "Rene was quite sensible. I only took one of their properties, and he came to the club, with Kyle tied up, and gave him a lesson in front of me."
Molly's whole body trembled, her eyes red, her face pale. She never expected it was Rene who ordered Kyle's beating.
Just for the Scott family's property, Kyle's life was worth nothing. All the contributions Kyle had made for the Scott family meant nothing.
Robert seemed to read Molly's thoughts and coldly reminded her, "An illegitimate son is worth nothing compared to the Scott family's property."
"You can't treat him like this. He's a human being, not an animal!" Molly pounded on the glass in front of her. Despite the close distance, she could do nothing. "You have no right, none of you!"
Robert laughed at her naivety and retorted, "Why wouldn't the Scotts have the right to discipline a disobedient son? Don't forget, he voluntarily returned to the Scott family, leaving his good job as a doctor."
Robert slowly revealed the cruelest truth, "Rene said just to keep him alive, nothing else matters. Even if he ends up crippled, the Scott family will accept it."
Feeling Molly's trembling in his arms, Robert tightened his grip on her shoulders, comforting her, "You see, Rene's decision is still for his child's sake. At most, he'll just break his wings. You don't need to worry."
If it were up to Robert, it wouldn't be as simple as crippling him or breaking his arms. He would never be so merciful to those who opposed him! Molly was a prime example. His momentary hesitation had given her the chance to betray him. He should have kept Molly locked up by his side, never letting her escape.
Hearing this, Molly's face fell apart.
The man sent by the Scotts' chain was aimed right at Kyle's wrists and knees. This method wouldn't kill him, but it was meant to cripple him. If this kept up for a few more hours, Kyle wouldn't just lose his legs; even his hands, which once healed others, would be ruined.
She could accept that! Her life was already a mess; Kyle couldn't end up like her because of her! If he did, she would go insane, truly insane!
"Robert, what do you want?" Molly grabbed Robert's collar, her eyes red, screaming, "What do you want? Tell me!"
"Didn't you think about today when you reported me?" Robert's lips curled, "Molly, you knew what I hated, yet you still crossed the line. Do you think Kyle's suffering ends here?"
Robert's cold smile didn't reach his eyes, but it was more terrifying than words. Molly's legs gave out, and she fell to her knees with a thud. "Robert, I'm begging you, let him go. He has nothing to do with this, really."
Molly knew who to beg for the best effect. Rene gave the order, but it was under Robert's intimidation that he acted. Only if Robert relented could Kyle be saved.
Robert looked at the kneeling, pleading Molly, not feeling happy but rather a surge of inexplicable anger. He lifted Molly's chin, smiling hypocritically, "Since you're begging me so much, of course, I'll give you a chance."
Molly was overjoyed, her muddled mind unable to discern whether Robert was sincere or not. She grabbed Robert's pant leg, her voice trembling, "Thank you, Robert, thank you. I promise I'll do whatever you say."
"Don't thank me just yet." Robert shook off her hand and patted the wrinkles on his clothes caused by Molly's grip. Then he instructed Zack, "Go tell Kyle that if he's willing to go abroad and swear on Molly's life never to see her again, I'll talk to Rene and let him go."
Molly knelt there, stunned. Robert was so insidious, making Kyle swear on her life. He knew it was impossible.
Robert's thin lips curled into an arrogant smile, "See, I'm giving him a chance. If he's willing, he can be free right now."
Compared to killing Kyle, he found this choice more interesting.
Human nature could never withstand scrutiny. Compared to living as a cripple, abandoning a woman was nothing. If Kyle couldn't be ruthless, Robert would help him along.
Zack conveyed the message inside, and it was clearly relayed to Kyle. Separated by a one-way mirror, Kyle couldn't see what was happening outside, but Molly could see everything clearly. Despite the inhuman torture, Kyle gritted his teeth, not uttering a word, showing no signs of submission. As long as he had a breath left, he wouldn't give in.
Kyle was showing his attitude and determination; he would never abandon Molly.
Time ticked by. Kyle's refusal to bow made Robert's face darker and darker!
Molly, desperate, pounded on the glass, shouting, "Kyle, agree! You fool, just agree!"
