Chapter 494 Who Wants to Kill Us

Chloe shot Harper a death glare, her bony face twisted into a freaky snarl.

"You’re toast, Harper. Just you. I’m outta here, starting fresh," Chloe squeaked.

She was still dreaming of a new beginning. The dude who saved her promised that if she nailed the job, she’d get a plane ticket, cash, and a passport. Not only could she jet off to fix her face, but she’d also have enough dough to live it up forever.

Harper pressed Chloe’s hand, her face dripping with sarcasm. "You’re a real idiot. Didn’t you hear? Those guys want us both dead."

"Don’t even think about playing me!" Chloe’s eyes went wide, and she cackled like a maniac. "Today, you’re the one biting the dust. I’ll make it. After they dump you, they’ll get me on a plane. I’ll fix my face and snag a rich guy to live the dream."

Harper barked, "Chloe, you’re nuts. I heard them clear as day. They said we’d both end up as unrecognizable corpses!"

Chloe didn’t buy it, but her grip loosened a bit. "You’re trying to mess with me, aren’t you?"

Harper wanted to crack open Chloe’s skull to see why she could hear her but tune out what those guys said.

Harper swallowed her anger. "Think back. Did they really say that? They just said you’d take the blame. After offing us, they’d pin it on you, killing two birds with one stone."

Chloe hesitated, thinking hard. Yeah, Barry did say something like that.

Harper added, "If they were gonna help you get on a plane, why would they be so brutal to you?"

A big chunk of skin on Chloe’s head was gone, leaving a bloody mess that was beyond gross. Harper looked away, unable to stomach it. She couldn’t figure out why Chloe didn’t seem to feel any pain. Must’ve been some weird drug they pumped into her.

Honestly, Chloe looked like a goner. The drug’s effect was limited, and who knew how long it’d last.

Harper said, "Chloe, no time to think. They’re gonna kill us both. Let’s team up, take those guys down, then sort out our own mess."

Harper’s calm vibe made Chloe start to doubt if those guys really planned to screw her over like Harper said. Finally, Chloe let go and snarled, "Don’t move. I’ll check!"

She tiptoed to the door and saw Joe on the phone. Joe said, "Got it, no problem. No survivors, don’t worry. That crazy one won’t last long after getting in the car. Makes it easier."

Chloe’s heart pounded with fear. She’d faked being crazy in the hospital for a long time, partly for treatment and partly to dodge criminal charges. But the court ruled she was sane during the incident and upheld the death sentence.

Now, Chloe got it. The "crazy one" Joe mentioned was her. She’d been played. They really planned to kill her.

Chloe’s foot slipped on a wooden plank with a squeak. Joe snapped to attention.

"Gotta go," Joe said and rushed in.

Harper scrambled, trying to make a break for it.

Joe let out a sigh of relief after finding out Harper was still there. He was mostly worried about Harper, the sane one, attempting an escape. Chloe? He couldn’t care less about her.

He sauntered over, saying sleazily, "Crawling, huh? You sure know how to strike a pose that gets guys going."

Harper looked scared out of her mind. "What do you want? Stay back!"

Joe lit a cigarette, taking his sweet time. "Just looking for a little fun, but we’re on a tight schedule. Such a shame!"

Then, a loud thud echoed. Joe cried out, blood gushing from his head, and he hit the ground hard. Harper exhaled in relief. She’d seen Chloe lurking behind and had purposely drawn Joe’s attention.

"Be careful. Check if there’s anyone else outside..." Harper started to say.

But before she could finish, Chloe grabbed a rock. She smashed Joe’s head about eight times until it was a bloody pulp.

Harper screamed, clapping her hands over her mouth. Chloe was in a full-blown manic frenzy.

Joe was long dead, but Chloe kept bashing his head like a madwoman. Just then, Barry walked in and said, "Joe, the car’s here."

He didn’t see Joe but spotted Chloe standing by a pile of hay, grinning like a lunatic. He cursed as he walked over, "You ugly broad, move it. Joe..."

Barry stuttered, then hit the ground. After a moment, he wailed, "Joe!"

There was no Joe, just a pile of flesh.

"Joe?" Chloe turned to Barry, smiling. "What about Joe?"

Barry’s legs turned to jelly, and he backed away like he’d seen a ghost. "Stay away from me! Stay away, you ugly freak!" Barry shouted in terror.

The next second, a blood-curdling scream filled the air. Chloe had a piece of bloody skin in her mouth, while Barry clutched his bloodied face, screaming.

Chloe laughed, clapping her hands. "Now you’re an ugly freak too! Welcome to the club!"

Chloe laughed like a maniac, completely unhinged.

Harper seized the moment to free her hands from the ropes and bolted for the door. Chloe heard the noise, whipped her head around, and her smile vanished.

Once, Chloe had been the beauty everyone praised. If it weren’t for Harper, she wouldn’t be in this mess! Her face was so wrecked it didn’t even look human. It was all Harper’s fault.

Chloe lunged, grabbed Harper’s hair, and yanked her back. Luckily, there was a pile of hay by the wall, so Harper didn’t hit the hard ground, but she was still dizzy from the yank.

"Bitch, trying to run?" Chloe approached, her eyes glowing with a crazy light.

In this manic state, whether running or fighting, she could outdo any normal person. She was unstoppable now.

Harper forced herself to stay calm. "Chloe, if you kill me now, you’re just playing into their hands."

"You think I’m that dumb?" Chloe glared at her. "You’re trying to talk me into letting you go, right!"

Harper thought, 'Of course.'

Harper said calmly, "Haven’t you wondered who wants us both dead?"

Chloe was taken aback. She hadn’t thought about that.

Harper propped herself up and scooted back a bit, stalling for time. "Even if we die, we should know who’s behind it. Got anyone in mind?"
