Chapter 138: Retribution

Daniel paused, staring at Zoe and John, then suddenly roared and charged.

By the time Brad and I got there, Daniel and John were already fighting.

Girls screamed and ran, while the boys stood back, watching.

Daniel wasn't short, but he was more of a bookworm than a fighter. He didn't stand a chance against John.

John went wild, punching Daniel's head, kicking him, and cursing.

Daniel got knocked down, tried to get up, but John kept knocking him back down.

His face was a bloody mess.

And Zoe, the girl Daniel once ditched his family for, just stood there with her hands in her pockets, watching without lifting a finger to help.

Her coldness towards Daniel was chilling. I couldn't imagine how he felt.

I was confused.

I thought she loved Daniel, but now it seemed like she never did. What was she after all these years? His looks?

Maybe she just kept Daniel as a backup. Otherwise, why would she hook up with John when she went to the Northern Institute of the Arts?

Was it Zoe's fault? Not entirely.

Was it Daniel's fault? He had it coming.

Daniel knew Zoe had hired people to come after me, a blatant crime. Yet he still let her do it.

Daniel couldn't see right from wrong. His mess was his own making, wasn't it?

"Stop." Brad stepped in, yanking John away and kicking him to the ground.

Seeing Brad, John's fierce look faded, and he took the kicks without fighting back.

No matter how tough he was, he couldn't take on Brad. That was proven back at the Northern Institute of the Arts.

"Brad, don't hit John!" Zoe's face went pale as she cried and rushed to hug John, sobbing.

When John was beating Daniel, Zoe didn't say a word. But when John got hit, she rushed out, crying like her life depended on it.

When you love someone, it's totally different from not caring at all.

Daniel's face was a mess, blood streaming from his nose. He lay on the ground, staring blankly at the sky, like a broken puppet.

"Daniel, you okay?" Brad reached out to help him.

Daniel wiped the blood off his face with his arm, got up with Brad's help, and stared directly at Zoe, who was crying while holding John.

He didn't cry when he got beaten, but his eyes welled up seeing Zoe cry for John.

He wobbled as he stood.

Staring at Zoe and John hugging, he started laughing louder and louder, turning manic. "Karma, it's really karma."

His desperate laughter echoed in front of the hotel.

It was indeed karma.

When I loved Daniel, he didn't care. After realizing he couldn't get me back, he regretted it. Now he wanted Zoe, but she ignored his injuries.

Daniel's suffering today was his own doing.

He wanted too much and ended up with nothing.

That's the price of greed.

"Such a handsome guy got cheated on."

"What a terrifying laugh. He must be heartbroken and gone mad."

"What's that woman doing, not wanting such a good-looking guy?"

"Didn't you see? That other guy is just as good-looking and looks rich."

John, with his wild looks and expensive clothes, and Daniel, with his refined features, were both the types girls liked.

The crowd pointed and talked.

"Brad, what should we do? Daniel looks so pitiful."

What goes around, comes around. Daniel's situation was his own fault. I didn't feel sorry for him, just pitied him from Brad's perspective.

"This day was bound to come. The sooner, the better. He'll get through it."

A BMW stopped, and a middle-aged man helped John into the back seat. Zoe didn't even glance at Daniel, got in, and left.

Daniel watched the BMW disappear, then collapsed to the ground.

I lost my hair accessory and glow stick. Brad and I ended up welcoming the New Year by Daniel's hospital bed.

The next morning, I woke up on the companion bed. Brad had already fetched hot water and was carefully wiping Daniel's body.

Daniel's upper lip was swollen, he had a cut above his right eye, and one leg was in a splint.

I hadn't realized how badly he was hurt last night.

Daniel was awake, silently letting Brad clean him. His eyes were empty, his whole being hollow.

Seeing it firsthand, he must be heartbroken.

Brad was right; the sooner he found out, the better. Anyway, he and Zoe were never going to end well.
