Chapter 498 Marriage
The next spring, when the flowers were in full bloom, I finally tied the knot with Brad.
Friends and classmates from the Northern Institute of the Arts showed up, including Benjamin with his wife and kid. His son was a ball of energy, running around and even hugging my leg. He told me I was pretty and that he wanted to marry me when he grew up, which had us all cracking up.
"You can't do that; she's my wife," Brad said, squatting down to pick up Benjamin's son and playfully tapping his nose.
The boy thought for a moment, then nodded seriously. "Alright, I'll marry her in my next life then."
I was floored that such a young kid could say something like that.
Just as I was about to ask him where he learned that, his mom came over, picked him up, kissed his cheek lovingly, and apologized, "Kids say the darndest things; don't mind him. Because of me and him, Benjamin and his beloved Mia couldn't be together in this life. It's my fault. I was too selfish. Benjamin and I agreed that in this life, we'll raise our child together, and in the next life, he can go find her, and I'll give them my blessing."
I never expected that the once-spoiled woman who caused a scene at the company with her mom would now be so kind and openly admit her mistakes, even willing to bless Benjamin.
Over the years, time had changed not only the world but also her.
However, the things she had done back then, the harm she had caused Mia, couldn't be resolved with a mere apology or a well-wish for the next life.
What she owed Mia could never be repaid.
As Mia's best friend, I never had the chance to meet her before, so I couldn't do anything for Mia. Now that I've met her, I didn't want to miss this opportunity.
Even though Mia had found her own happiness, the pain she experienced still needed to be acknowledged.
I was considering what to say when someone spoke up before me.
Yancy walked over from the sunlight, holding the delicate and gentle Mia by the hand. His eyes were filled with a dazzling tenderness.
He remarked, "My woman will belong to me for all eternity. All of Mia's happiness will come from me, and no one else." He shook his head, glanced sideways at Mia, and lifted their tightly interlocked fingers. "Don't even think about it."
Benjamin looked up at the two who were closely bonded; the unwillingness and pain in his eyes surged up but were quickly suppressed.
Seeing this, I sneered and ignored Benjamin.
He deserved all of this.
I said, "Mia, you're here! Why so late? Were you too busy making love with Yancy and forgot about my wedding?"
Mia's face instantly turned red, and she shyly raised her little fist to punch me lightly. "I was just trying to make myself look nicer so you could save face; that's why I'm late."
I looked at the hickeys on her delicate neck that couldn't be covered and knowingly smiled, teasing her, "Then I should thank you." Then I asked, "Yancy, did you forget to close the window at your place yesterday?"
Yancy was slightly stunned and replied, "No, I personally closed the window."
His cute reaction made Brad and me laugh, and it successfully made Mia bite her lip in embarrassment. She looked at Yancy with watery eyes and shyly asked him to stop talking.
Following my gaze, Yancy noticed the bright hickeys and smiled proudly. He grabbed Mia's hand and kissed it. "My bad. I'll be more careful next time and make sure to close the window tight so no mosquitoes get in."Everyone laughed knowingly, and even though Benjamin seemed a bit miffed, he eventually cracked a smile, probably lost in his own thoughts.
At the wedding, my parents were moved to tears, and Emma kept dabbing at her eyes, repeatedly saying how lucky we were.
When it was time for the bride and groom to speak, I got all choked up talking about my past confusion and hesitation, the joy of making up my mind, the determination when I decided to marry Brad, and our dreams for the future. I got so emotional, I almost couldn't get through it.
They were tears of joy; I cried uncontrollably while feeling an overwhelming happiness inside. From start to finish, Brad's eyes were red, and he held my hand without letting go for even a moment.
When I tossed the bouquet, the bright roses landed right in Mia's arms.
Yancy looked at Mia, holding the bouquet in a daze. His Adam's apple bobbed, and he immediately dropped to one knee, holding her hand to keep her in place.
Mia was startled and told him to get up quickly.
This time, Yancy didn't listen. He pulled out a royal blue velvet box from his pocket, opened it, and revealed a diamond ring that sparkled with colorful light. Looking up, he sincerely said, "Mia, from the first time I saw you, I knew I could never let you go in this life. I can't live without you.
You will never know how happy I was when you agreed to be my girlfriend. You asked me where I went that day, right? Now I can tell you that I was so happy that I ran to the top of the mountain and shouted for an hour. All the flowers, trees, blue sky, and gentle wind on the mountain witnessed my joy.
Mia, I want to hold you day and night. I'm so afraid that one day I'll wake up and all the happiness will just be a dream. So, Mia, my darling, will you marry me? Let me truly have you, no more fear of losing you, no more anxiety. Marry me, Mia."
Mia was stunned, and not just her—none of us had expected Yancy to propose to the one he loved most during my wedding.
But that was okay.
It was what we all wanted.
"Mia, if you're a woman, you should say yes to him," I blurted out, forgetting I was the bride.
"Marry him!" All the guests were shouting.
Mia finally came to her senses, with tears in her eyes, and extended her right hand.
Yancy stood up in ecstasy, put the ring on her finger, and said deeply, "Thank you, Mia, my darling."
Then he took Mia's hand and ran off.
No one asked where they were going; we just knew they were running towards happiness!
After seeing the guests off, Brad and I were about to go back to our room to rest when someone came running from afar, dragging a suitcase and shouting loudly, "Jane, wait. I'm back!"
I turned around, squinting against the midday sun.
Amelia, dressed in casual clothes, was running towards me, followed by a tall, thin man who looked familiar in both face and figure.
I looked closely and realized it was Adam.
"Amelia, why did you bring Adam?" I bent down and shouted.
Amelia glanced back, rolled her eyes helplessly, and kept running. "Ignore him."
Adam didn't get angry; he slowed his pace and, like a calm hunter, kept his eyes fixed on Amelia's back.
I looked up at Brad, his beautiful eyes reflecting my image.
A pair of playful birds broke the silence of the sky, leaving behind joyful calls.
How wonderful; we all found our own happiness!
