Chapter 401 The Plan

"Honestly, Professor Evans, I don't want to accept this, and I really don't want to. But here we are, and Brad must have his reasons. I don't have any other options right now. Let's just see how it plays out. Even though Jenny is a pain, she did get hurt saving Brad. We owe her for that. As long as she doesn't push it too far, I can deal with it as payback for her saving Brad's life."

Professor Evans nodded, looking pleased, and gave my shoulder a pat before turning to Daniel. "Daniel, make sure to explain this to your parents later so they don't worry. Jane, this is a big test for you and Brad. I believe in your character and confidence. So, hang in there and don't let me down. If you run into any problems you can't handle, come to me right away."

"Thanks, Professor Evans."

"Oh, and Rafael heard about this too. He was so mad he didn't sleep all night and kept saying he wanted to confront the Taylor family. If there's anything you can't tell me, talk to Rafael. He might seem wild, but he's actually pretty steady and has his own ideas. He can help you out."

"Got it, Professor Evans."

After saying goodbye to Professor Evans, Daniel and I walked out together.

Daniel grabbed his big travel bag, slung it over his shoulder, and walked lazily.

"I didn't think you'd take it so calmly. I thought you'd be a mess and insist on getting to the bottom of it."

I shook my head. If crying and making a fuss worked, why would Daniel have gone to meet Brad and figure things out?

In a lawful society, Jenny's actions technically crossed the line. But we couldn't use legal means to protect ourselves because Jenny once saved Brad's life, and she sacrificed her legs for him.

Everyone knew how important legs were to a person.

From this angle, we would always be indebted to Jenny for what she did for Brad.

Brad felt obligated to repay Jenny. That was why Jenny pushed it so far, and he chose to accept it rather than take legal action. He silently compromised.

I understood Brad deeply. I knew his character and his thoughts, so I naturally supported all his decisions.

"Daniel, you didn't say it, but I know the trip to Silverbrook City must have been tough. I really appreciate it."

Daniel waved it off. "No big deal."

Then Daniel checked the time. "It's not too late. I need to go back and clean up, so I won't see you off. You'll be fine on your own, right?"

It wasn't even seven in the evening yet, so of course, I'd be fine.

After saying goodbye to Daniel, I started walking home alone.

Brad's situation was pretty much what I guessed. But a guess is just a guess. When it became real, I still needed time to adjust.

I agreed quickly at the time because I didn't want to hold Brad back.

When it was all over and I faced life alone, I realized I wasn't as composed as I thought. I felt miserable and wanted to find a quiet corner to cry my eyes out.

As I reached the school gate, I saw Mia standing on tiptoe, looking into the school, with Yancy standing behind her like a loyal guard.

Seeing Mia and Yancy waiting for me lightened my mood a bit. With them around, Brad could relax. I had to keep it together so Brad wouldn't worry about me.

I was so wrapped up in Brad's stuff that I totally forgot to ask Mia if Yancy's confession went well and if he gave her the ring.

Now that Brad's situation was sorted, I should focus on Mia's love life too.

"Why are you waiting out here? You could've gone inside," I asked Mia, confused.

Yancy was a student here, so it shouldn't be hard for Mia to get in with him.

"Why would I go inside? There are so many paths; how would I know which one you usually take? If I miss you, how long will it take for us to find each other? And why didn't you answer your phone? Is your phone just for show? I thought something happened to you and got worried," Mia said, giving me a playful slap.

I took a quick look at Mia's hand; no ring marks.

I raised an eyebrow at Yancy. Did he fail?

But Yancy wasn't even looking at me; his eyes were glued to Mia.

I pulled out my phone and saw it was still on silent. I had put it on silent earlier to avoid interruptions and forgot to switch it back.

I had missed seven calls, all from Mia and Yancy. They must have been worried, knowing my recent emotional rollercoaster, and came to check on me.

"I'm fine. Have you guys eaten? My treat," I said.

The project I was working on got completed, and eight million dollars had hit my account this afternoon. After taxes, of course. I was planning to celebrate with Mia.

But then Daniel's news came, and it brought me down.

So, today was a mixed bag for me.

"Yancy already made dinner and was waiting for you. You didn't answer your phone, so I was worried sick. You owe me a big meal for that, and if you say no, I'm going to beat you up!"

Mia said excitedly, and I could only nod, knowing I was in the wrong.

Going home to eat sounded good. I really needed someone to talk to, maybe have a few drinks, and then get drunk to ease the pain.

But unfortunately, even that simple wish was out of reach for me.

I could have a few drinks, a few bottles, or even a few cases, but getting drunk was too difficult.

Of course, having someone close to talk to was also good, at least to relieve some of the psychological pressure.

After Mia pushed me into the back seat of the car and we got home, I had a meal of spaghetti while Mia kept nagging. It wasn't until I found a moment to tell her about Brad's situation that Mia's expression changed. After a long pause, she said, "Fuck! Jenny wouldn't be planning to use some trick to sleep with Brad and then use another trick to capture his soul, would she?"

Could I say no? Because that was exactly what it was.

Mia asked, "So, what are you going to do?"

I told her, "Since Brad agreed to Jenny's unreasonable demands, what I need to do is cooperate with Brad and perfectly fulfill this agreement."
