Chapter 59 Guarding Love
"You don't know this? Seriously?" Amelia looked at me like I was clueless.
"You know?"
"A bracelet means protecting a lover. I think Brad likes you more than just as a friend."
"That's ridiculous, it's Brad," I muttered, blushing.
Amelia gave me a look that screamed, "You're so naive. Just wait, one day Brad will confess."
No way!
After a fun meal, it was past 2 PM. Everyone left, still chatting about how much fun they had and planning the next hangout.
Everyone left except Louis, who was leaning against his car, smoking, clearly waiting for me.
I heard he came from a wealthy family. Judging by the G-Class Mercedes, he seemed to be doing well.
"What are you looking at? Get in the car," Brad said, standing beside me and glaring at Louis.
I smiled, "Wait a bit, he might have something to say."
"Up to no good," Brad grumbled, sounding like a kid who didn't get his candy, which was kinda cute.
I nudged Brad to wait in the car and walked towards Louis.
Louis had been watching me. When he saw me coming, he quickly stubbed out his cigarette and straightened up, adjusting his jacket.
I heard Brad's cold snort behind me.
I glanced back to see Brad looking annoyed, like a dad watching his daughter talk to another boy.
I smiled at Brad, and his sulky face softened a bit.
"Jane, I had so much to say, but seeing Daniel made me lose it. Sorry for ruining your birthday."
"It's fine, it's all in the past. We're all classmates, no worries," I said.
"Jane," he said seriously, eyes full of emotions I couldn't read, "I'm leaving and won't be back. I've liked you for years, but you never noticed. I guess it wasn't meant to be. In high school, I wrote you eleven letters, pouring my heart out, but none reached you. You were always kind to me, even when others avoided me because I was chubby. I thought you didn't want to hurt my feelings by rejecting me. But this winter break, I found out Daniel intercepted all those letters. He told everyone I wasn't worthy of you. Everyone knew about your feelings for Daniel, and I knew someone like you was out of my league. But I liked you so much that every letter in my math problems turned into your smiling face, giving me the courage to write again and again."
I was a bit shocked. The chubby, always-smiling boy who was shorter than me had liked me for years!
Maybe my surprise pleased him because Louis smiled and ruffled my hair. "When I found out, I was furious and wanted to confront him. But so many years had passed, it seemed pointless. I haven't been back much, and even when I did, I rarely met up with everyone. It wasn't until yesterday that I found out you and Daniel never got together. I kept telling myself not to act impulsively, but when I saw him, I couldn't hold back. If you hadn't been there, I would've punched him."
"Violence isn't the answer," I said, not knowing what else to say.
One had liked me for years, and the other I had liked for years. It was a tough conversation.
"Jane, I'm not saying this for any other reason. If Daniel had treated you well, I would've let it go. But he hurt you for someone like Zoe, and I can't stand that. It's a shame I didn't get to punch him."
So that's what happened.
I looked up at Louis, who was smiling gently, the anger in his eyes fading.
"Louis, I really didn't know about those letters. I'm sorry for wasting your feelings."
"Jane, I stayed to explain, not to make you feel guilty. I'm leaving tomorrow, and we might not see each other again. You're the only thing tying me to Sunhaven. Take care of yourself and be happy. Daniel isn't worth it, but you'll find someone who truly loves you. I wish you happiness."
"Louis, you too. The world is big, and there are many people. You'll find someone who loves you back. Be happy." I choked up, tears welling up.
Louis and I had been classmates since middle school. I treated him as a good friend, not knowing he had liked me all these years.
Even if I had seen those letters, I wouldn't have accepted him. But I would've treasured his feelings and not let him suffer for so long.
The chubby boy I remembered had grown into the tall young man standing before me, but his heart stayed the same.
No matter what happened in the future, even if we never met again, he would always be the chubby boy with the soft short hair in my heart, and also my good friend.
"I'm really happy you cried for me. Alright, I won't say more. Don't cry. I'd like to wipe your tears, but Brad is glaring at me, so I don't dare. Goodbye, Jane."
"Goodbye, Louis," I said, waving with tears in my eyes.
