Chapter 201: Feeding

So, two months was just a ballpark figure. Who knew if he’d actually make it back? And if he didn’t, how long would we be stuck apart?

We’d just started dating for real, and then he up and left for who-knows-where, leaving me solo. How was I supposed to deal with that?

I bawled my eyes out, already picturing him saying sorry and telling me his exchange program got extended forever.

Back then, I was just overthinking, never thought my worries would actually come true.

Mia was a total standout at the Northern Institute of the Arts, a school with some serious cred. She graduated with flying colors. After a few days of job hunting, she landed a gig she liked at a foreign trade company near National Capital University.

Mia was a language whiz, fluent in three languages.

Her job was to handle chats with foreign clients. If she nailed it during the three-month trial, she’d get to join the translation team as a pro translator.

The day she aced the interview, Mia had this huge, confident smile I’d never seen before. She said her childhood dream was to be a diplomat. Even though she didn’t become one, being a translator was pretty sweet too. Once she snagged the chief translator spot, she could travel the world with her boss, soaking up different cultures and beautiful sights, enjoying free travel while making bank—what a sweet life.

As she talked, her eyes sparkled, and she seemed totally reborn.

Watching her speak so passionately, I thought, this is the real Mia. When she was with Benjamin, she seemed like an accessory, but this independent and confident Mia was the real deal!

Maybe ditching Benjamin was the best thing for her.

Life went on smoothly. Mornings, I hit up classes while she went to work. Evenings, we stayed in and tried out new recipes. I was gearing up to be a good wife someday, and she was keeping busy to avoid overthinking and to move past the shadow Benjamin left.

Speaking of Benjamin, Mia had been here for almost two weeks, and I hadn’t seen him call her once. Maybe he was busy with his pregnant Sydney and had already forgotten about Mia.

Every night, I heard her crying under the covers, feeling helpless and heartbroken.

Sometimes, I really wanted to ask Benjamin if he was really that heartless, ditching years of feelings for a marriage that, in my opinion, wasn’t all that honorable for the sake of family interests.

But since Mia hadn’t asked, I had no right to bring it up. Besides, Mia had finally calmed down, and I was scared any action would mess up the peace.

Mia’s emotions got more stable day by day, but she was still super thin and frail. Even though I couldn’t see the pain she was going through, at least she was slowly accepting that Benjamin was gone and was trying to start fresh.

One day, she’d forget those sad memories, and someone would come along to heal her heart.

She was proving to herself that breaking up wasn’t as tough as she thought. It just hurt a bit, and she had to tough it out on her own.

Almost a month had flown by, and I was gearing up for my final evaluation.

Brad was blowing up my phone three times a day, like a worried dad, giving me all sorts of detailed instructions. It wasn’t until I turned on my phone’s recording function and promised to memorize everything he said that he finally chilled out.

Every time this happened, Mia would look at me with envy and say how lucky I was to have found the right guy.

I had secretly asked Brad about Benjamin, wondering if he had no lingering feelings after five years together and if he didn’t even care to try to win Mia back.

Brad said that if they could forget each other like this, it would be good for Mia. She needed to let go of the past and look forward. As for Benjamin’s situation, he didn’t spill the beans.

What he said made sense and matched my thoughts. As for the past and Benjamin, it was best to let it go. The past was the past, and we needed to look to the future.

My biggest worry was that Benjamin would keep messing with Mia. If that happened, it would be a nightmare for her. Being endlessly bothered by Benjamin would break her down.

My evaluation results were solid, way better than I expected. Larry was so stoked that he even called me a rising star.

Summer break kicked off, and Helen called to ask when I’d be heading back. I didn’t want to leave Mia alone, so I planned to stick around a bit longer. When she had some time off, I’d take her to my place for a vacation.

And I could use the summer break to speed up that ongoing project and make some cash sooner.

I started working on my painting while taking care of Mia’s day-to-day.

Seeing Mia gradually regain her spirit and the light in her eyes grow brighter, I felt a sense of accomplishment.

Turns out, taking care of someone else felt pretty awesome, no wonder Brad enjoyed it so much.

Days passed smoothly, and Mia smiled more. Every day, she’d come home and tell me about the cool stuff that happened at work, the projects she was part of, the meetings she organized, and the wins she scored.

Seeing her slightly raised chin, I was so happy. The fearless, cheerful, and strong Mia was making a comeback.

One afternoon, I had nothing to do, so I walked over to Mia’s company to pick her up from work.

The company was huge and didn’t allow cars and people without entry permits in. As an outsider, I had to hang around near the gate, hoping to surprise her.

Unexpectedly, my surprise visit let me witness a dramatic scene.

After the end-of-day music played, employees said their goodbyes and drove off.

Mia came out late, wearing a long white dress with her hair down her back, looking as innocent as a college freshman.

I always knew Mia was beautiful, but I didn’t expect her to look so stunningly beautiful in the sunlight despite her thin frame.

I finally got it—Mia was meant to be sunny and cheerful.
