Chapter 450 Contempt
Amelia pointed over and said, "See those folks over there? They're friends of Ryan's mom. The moment they showed up, they started yelling their heads off, not saying anything useful, and they didn't even have the guts to come over and argue with me. Just making a racket. The nurse tried to shut them up a few times, but no luck."
"They should just call the cops. What's the point of all this yelling? They don't even have the guts to back it up. That whole family is a mess, they're all nuts," Mia said, her blunt and righteous nature shining through. She couldn't stand people like that.
Amelia replied, "They're saying Ryan got hurt and they want compensation. It's all about the money."
I just couldn't wrap my head around it.
Yancy had mentioned that the Price family, while not as prestigious as the Bailey or Evans families, was still pretty well-known in Regalia and definitely not hurting for cash.
Even though Ryan's dad, Finnley, was an illegitimate child and didn't have the same status in the Price family as Adam's dad, he was still part of the Price family. It was hard to believe he'd stoop to using Ryan's injury to squeeze out some money.
Why was this family so obsessed with cash?
"Aren't they well-off? Why would they act so trashy?" I asked, puzzled.
Mia scoffed, "Some people are never satisfied with what they have. They always want more, even if it means taking from others. It's just shameless."
Amelia sneered, "Exactly. I've seen through the Price family today. If they were really as glamorous as they seem, why did Grace leave Ryan and run abroad back then? And why would Ryan lower himself to discuss marriage with my family? I was stupid to be fooled by someone like Ryan for so many years. What a pity."
I said, "So, Ryan is..."
Amelia cut in, "Yeah. Back then, Ryan's dad messed up and got kicked out of the Price family by Ryan's grandpa, who also publicly announced that Finnley was no longer in line for inheritance. This left Ryan in a slump, and Grace, seeing no benefit, booked a flight and left. Grace ended up being a homewrecker abroad, got beaten up by the wife, and was left barely alive, unable to have kids, and with a ruined reputation. That's when she came back to find Ryan."
Intrigued by the story, Mia nudged me aside and moved closer to Amelia. "Ryan agreed to this? And the Price family, too?"
Amelia replied, "Of course. The Price family had no idea what Grace had done abroad. Otherwise, they wouldn't have let her cause trouble during the marriage talks. Grace came back pretending to be a successful entrepreneur, and Ryan's mom immediately tried to please her. She couldn't even tell if it was true or not and practically begged Grace to look at her. Their family is bound to face retribution sooner or later."
"By the way, Amelia." I pointed toward the emergency room and said, "What's going on? When I came home, I saw a bunch of roses on the ground. Did Ryan find out the truth and come with a ring to ask for your forgiveness?"
Amelia responded, "Pretty much. He said he loved me and begged me to marry him. I refused and told him to get lost. That idiot pulled out a fruit knife and said life was meaningless without me and that he might as well die. I thought he was bluffing, but he actually cut himself and then threw a fit, banging his head against his car. He was bleeding a lot. It was scary. He was unlucky too; the ambulance got delayed by a fire truck on the way. If it weren't for the security guard helping to stop the bleeding, he might not have made it."Amelia's face twisted with disgust as she recounted the story.
It was clear Ryan's actions had really turned her off.
Even I couldn't believe that the usually proud Ryan would go so far as to hurt himself.
If Ryan really loved Amelia that much, where was he back then?
I couldn't tell if Ryan's desperate act was out of love or if he only realized Amelia's worth after being deceived, but either way, his last-minute affection was the cheapest kind. There was no way he could fix things now.
Just then, the red light in the emergency room flicked off, and the attending physician came out first. Finnley jumped up to ask about Ryan's condition. The doctor said they had brought Ryan in just in time; if it had been five minutes later, they might not have been able to save him. He advised the family to take good care of Ryan.
Ryan's mom, Delphine Waverly, started bawling into her handkerchief when she heard Ryan had been saved. Her cries were ear-piercing, and the handkerchief finally showed some signs of dampness.
But her crying didn't sound like joy or relief at her son's survival; it was more like someone had died.
"She sounds like a strangled hen. It's so annoying," Mia said, covering her ears, making Amelia and me laugh.
Even a hen knew to protect its chicks, but Delphine was probably even worse.
After a while, a few nurses wheeled the emergency bed out and straight into the observation room.
I glanced over from a distance and saw that Ryan wasn't wearing his glasses and looked very pale. I couldn't see much else.
Everyone followed, still spouting useless comments.
Even though Ryan's injury was his own doing, it was still related to Amelia, so we had to go check on him. The three of us trailed at the back of the crowd.
The hospital room was a madhouse. Finnley stood sternly on one side of the bed, while Delphine occupied the other side, crying loudly. Others surrounded the bed, loudly giving their opinions, not caring that the patient needed peace and quiet.
The nurse kept stressing the need for silence, but no one listened.
Then, a woman turned around, saw Amelia standing at the door, and shouted, "Ryan, my dear child, he risked his life for such a shameless woman. It's not worth it. You shameless woman, Ryan is in this state because of you. Why are you just standing there? Come over and apologize. If it weren't for you, he wouldn't be suffering like this."
With someone leading the charge, the situation quickly spiraled out of control.
Everyone started blaming Amelia, as if she had ordered Ryan to hurt himself. They pushed all the blame onto her, each one of them wanting to skin her alive and drink her blood to vent their anger.
However, they were all wary of Amelia's status and only dared to say harsh words without taking any extreme actions, staying relatively rational.
Finnley and Delphine, constrained by their status, didn't join in and stood still, coldly staring at Amelia.
Amelia didn't say a word, just coldly watched their ugly performance, her disdain and contempt clearly visible.
